Which Conspiracy Theories Are Present In The Film Us?

A list of nine movies that explore various conspiracy theories, from government cover-ups to elite exploitation, is provided. These films, including classics like All the President’s Men and The Manchurian Candidate, provide an exploration of how governments can be overthrown, manipulated, or controlled by shadowy forces.

Oliver Stone, a US director, has often dealt with conspiracies in his films, such as his 1991 movie “JFK” which investigates the alleged cover-up of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Conspiracy Theory, a 1997 American political action thriller film directed by Richard Donner, stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, and Patrick Stewart.

One prominent fan theory is that Jason is actually a Tethered who was switched prior to the events of the film, meaning the scarred Pluto was born above ground, while Jason was until recently living below ground with Red. The ending of the film is not a reveal about Jason’s hidden identity but an allusion to the end of the thriller video where MJ is revealed to be a Tethered.

Aurora’s Been Waiting For Red To Return, The Children Are The Only Successful Parts Of The Experiment, and Adelaide Suppressing The Memories Of Her are some of the other popular conspiracy theories. Jordan Peele’s latest horror film, “Us”, has five different theories to make sense of the twisted world, which began as a kernel on Reddit and has blossomed into a full-fledged conspiracy theory.

This class will look at the history of conspiracy theories in American media and culture from the 50s and 60s (UFOs, the red scare, JFK’s assassination) to the present day.

  • Adelaide was the first and only successful clone before they abandoned the experiment. I haven’t heard anybody mention this. If you notice she’s the youngest person underground when she leads the real Adelaide to the fun house. She was controlling the real Adelaide not Adelaide controlling her which was happening with all the other clones.

  • I saw a lot of people saying “why did it take so long for the real lupita to emerge from the ground, why didn’t she just leave”, and I’m just like doesn’t it remind you of when middle class and higher class people say to the poor and disfranchised, why don’t you just become first class citizens like us or blames people who lives in the slums of poverty for their situation entirely on them not realizing the government and society did and does things to keep them there. It’s almost like a generational thing where people are programmed to live and stay in poverty, and being there put Them in that mindset which took them a while to break free from. In interviews Jordan saids “generational trauma” so many times.

  • There was one meaning I been looking into lately.. (SPOILERS) If you noticed, they showed fake things being covered by the real object. Example. The real spider emerging from the big fake spider, or the frisbee covering up the real circle on the picnic blanket. That may be a clue referencing the fake woman being replaced by the real woman and he’s been telling us that this whole time 🤔🤔. Idk y’all tell me

  • The final fight between Adelaide and Red honestly gave me chills. The way red moves around is haunting and it seems like the whole room is set up like a chess board. Adelaide struggles but red keeps her cool. And you can tell she’s been waiting to do this. The haunting music that accompanies it is amazing. The chords move alongside red as she paces back and forth. This movie is just super intricate and nothing’s an accident.

  • To the people who are still confused as to the main overall message of the film: The main message or theme was to convey that we live in a society where the higher class citizens are treated like first class citizens while the lower class citizens are oppressed and forgotten about in American society. Yes there’s thousands of themes that this films draws but IMO this was the overall theme, everything else’s are bonuses that Jordan has given us to discuss and figure out over the course of years.

  • Another theme was “Thriller” from Michael Jackson. It was close to midnight (11:11 p.m.), when she entered the House of Mirrors. The boy with the Werewolf mask. The red jumpsuits/one glove. When they showed the doppelganger’s mimicking their counterparts, they resembled the zombies in the article. At the end, Adelaide smiled diabolically, the way Michael Jackson smiled at the end in Thriller article.

  • It’s a spiritual awakening (gone wrong lol). The tethered fam seems to represent their souls and were trying to survive against their egos/the people we view as normal. The tethered repped oneness and peace but weren’t given the chance to flourish, and got caged in early childhood. And they were the elements at their core – The boy was fire, the girl was air (running/track, always jokes like air signs do), dad was water (initiated beach trip/always wanted to be on the water) and mom is earth (Mother Earth/ she was running the underground area beneath the earth). And so much more….so deep Jordan Peele, whew

  • one of the hints to the ending that I haven’t seen mentioned much is how Fake Adelaide interacts with the tethered children. She sympathizes with them in their final moments and also seems to know how to console the tethered girl. Whether it’s a mother’s instinct or because she related to them, I’m not sure.

  • Here is something that really blew my mind… the final song is called Les Fleur (The Flower). Something coming up from the ground. The last lines of the song are, “Light up the sky with your prayers of gladness and rejoice for the darkness is gone. Throw off your fears let your heart beat freely at the sign that a new time is born”. This to me is the song of the “tethered”, they have come into the world from the Earth and it is now their time to rule.

  • There was some things that I pointed out. Where Adalaide was barking and growling when she killed the twin and Red, Where she was on the beach mentioning to kitty that she wasn’t much of a Talker, and I think the last has to do with Jason on the beach when he told one of the twins that he was digging a tunnel. Those kinda interested me. Just the small details and How Addy decided they should go to Mexico because she knew what was happening over the events of Hands Across America

  • While I fascinate over the twists and various meanings of this great piece of art, I’m saddened at the same time at how abandoned the citizens of Mozambique must feel at this very moment hanging on to dear life…sometimes it’s enough just to care so your tethered soul can feel and experience hope…I really appreciate Jordan’s mind

  • You also missed the Twin Peaks references. The hall of mirrors is set up to resemble a forest. Just before Adelaide reaches the portal she gets startled by a fake owl. This mirrors the portal to the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks where Agent Cooper enters (and gets trapped) and which his doppelganger escapes from in the second season finale (from the Red Room that features multiple doubles of Twin Peaks citizens). The owls in Twin Peaks are harbingers/indicators of evil. The original Adelaide in called Red, and is instrumental in the other tethered’s escape. Also, The Time Machine (the films as well as the story by H.G. Wells) features the underground Morlocks and the above ground Eloi.

  • 2:48 I had to stop when they called Gen X the Lost Generation. That name goes to the generation that lived through WWI. Is this not common knowledge? I realize that sounds sarcastic but I’m being sincere: I have never heard Gen Xers called that, but I’ve only ever heard WWI youths (who died en mass during the Great War) called the Lost Generation.

  • The song “I Got 5 On It” has a double meaning also. It was sampled from Club Nouveau’s song, “Why You Treat Me So Bad”, released in 1986, the same year the movie’s earlier scenes happened. Both sides treated each other badly, and Jordan’s choice in music references ramped up the anxiety levels in a genius way. He could be our generation’s next Alfred Hitchcock!

  • I have so many questions: if the clone girl could so easily escape the underground by simply going up an elevator, then why did none of the other clones ever escape? why does young adelaide, after being kidnapped by her clone and put underground, become evil and want to kill the whole world? what do the rabbits eat?

  • Theory Jason above is actually a tethered while Pluto is the real person After the grand mother died, Jason had a different behavior and had new vocabulary, when the tethered Jason was on the surface playing with the lighter, the one in the bottom was probably playing with matches and ended up burning his mouth which is why he doesnt talk and has a scar. Also, when Jason was walking backwards and pluto was doing the same, Adelaide was shouting because Pluto was going to get burnt, at that moment thats when Adelaide realizes that her real son is dying in fire. That explains why when Red kidnaps Jason, Red doesnt kill Jason right away because that was her tethered son. Adelaide(Tethered) Pluto(Real) Jason(Tethered) Red(Real) The real one(Red) doesnt kill Jason because she raised him. I’m probably wrong but it was worth a try to type all this out.

  • Notice how the mom saved Jason from being locked in the closet, and then the tether mom saved Pluto from being trapped in the same closet. Both were trapped in the closet because of the ambulance toy. And the moms came to the rescue. Just like throughout the movie, they called the police and nobody answered. Emergency was not available at all. It was the mom who saved everyone and acted as a hero even though the police couldn’t. She, in a sense, is an ‘‘ambulance ‘in the movie

  • I noticed that when the boy enters the port-a-potty there’s a sign that says “Port-a-shell”. When the family is back in the house and Adelaide is explaining the story to the dad, there’s a picture frame with shells. From my understanding the symbolism is used to describe the physical body as a shell where the souls of the tethered dwell

  • This movie is the perfect representation of psychiatrist Carl Jung’s idea of “the shadow”, which is a manifestation of our unconscious. In each of the replicated characters, you can see their inner wants and desires coming alive when they cross paths. Such as when Zora meets her doppelgänger, Umbrae. Umbrae encourages Zora to run, even though Zora has let the sport go in the recent years. Umbrae shows Zora her unconscious, but in peele’s twisted way :)). The same is seen in Jason and Pluto. Jason is seen consistently attempting magic tricks, one of which is fire. Pluto represents the chaotic mindset that inhabits Jason’s mind. I mean come on, the child is both neurotic and a total spaz. Another connection is Freud’s use of “the underground” to represent the unconscious, which is seen when Adelaide enters the house of mirrors. The scene depicts her entering the depths. metaphorically, she’s entering the unconscious to meet her doppelgänger (don’t even get me started on the whole switch up between those two characters). Anyway that’s my take on the movie, and I’m excited to see more interpretations:D

  • I love the focus on the song “I got 5 on it” which track really comes from a song from 1986 called “why you treat me so bad” if you look up the lyrics it will freak you out. Also I saw in another article that the number 5 is referenced in pretty much every scene more so as the roman numeral V. Check it out.

  • My wife and I both noticed something different with the boy at the end of the movie!!!!! When his mom came down looking for him and after she did he seemed very very distant and at the very end when she was driving he was giving her the stink eye like he knew something!!!!!! I loved the film. I felt so bad for the original girl she got the wrong end of the stick I wish now the original girl would’ve killed the weasel that stole her life… great movie tho I seen it twice this week and it’s only Wednesday

  • I really enjoyed the “Thriller” reference. SPOILER!!!!!!!!: When Lupita smiles and glances ever so slightly at her son, after it was revealed that she in-fact wasn’t who she portrayed to be, reminded me a lot of how at the end of “Thriller” MJ turned to the camera to show he wasn’t who he came off to be. But rather, the werewolf from the film they left. I thought that was really interesting

  • I think that the request of overlooking amazing odds like the frizbee landing on the exact spot and the others is a slight that humans would overlook the chance that their missing child would be replaced with a double by chance and the purpose of mentioning the underground tunnels is to point out that the odds of such switch must have gotten larger due to the increased possibility of segmented populations existing in the tunnels to birth a child needed to replace the kid. I also find that the tunnels were important not just to make a metaphor for class relations but to also ask the audience to imagine if the government was doing things on the surface, what sort of experiments could the government had allowed were it underground or it just didn’t have any papers.

  • I grew suspicious because the more Adelaide killed the more crazy she became and started growling when she killed the twin. Also she didn’t want the the kids from the underground to die she could’ve killed the girl when she was stuck in the tree, and she started yelling no when the boy set himself on fire

  • QUESTIONS: 1. What was the significance of the necklace? After Adelaide kills Red, shes grunting while taking ha necklace off Red… I think im missing something there. Anyone? 2. The red vs Adelaide fight. When red “sits Adelaide down” at the desk, shes whispering something to her. I never could catch it. I bet it’s important. 3. Why is Adelaide saying “no” to pluto backing in the fire? Is it just that shes simply empathetic? Or is it deeper than that? 4. Why didnt Red harm Jason? She hid him in a locker, where he stayed. Also empathetic? Odd. 5. After Adelaide kills red, and finds her son in the locker, she is acting wierd. Revealing her face saying “looks, see” and she says “do you understand?” And jason says no. Idk that entire scene was confusing. 6. Jump back to when jason draws the bloody handed “11:11” man, he tells his mom he doesn’t know what it is and not to mention its drawn from the view behind jason. Wierd. To draw in 3rd person. But whatever. 7. (Last one guys) We see that the tethered communicate with growls and clicks. Red can talk as well. (Obviously), but one thing that’s important to note, is the laugh. Even if Adelaide was the original tether as a young girl, she clearly can talk and laugh normal, why would she suddenly laugh EXACTLY like red? Wierd. It just doesn’t make sense to me for Adelaide to growl, make click sounds AND laugh JUST like Red just because she killed her?. Any awnsers, further questions or just some good theories, are welcome! Lets get a good convo going!

  • Don’t miss the Black Flag tee-shirts that are worn by characters in both 1986 (the carnival game guy, and the fact that the prize of his game that Adelaide wants is #11) and in the current time….one of the twins has a Black Flag tee shirt on, but it has the logo with black letters on a white background and the guy earlier white letters on a black background – maybe the opposite, I can’t remember – but they are mirror images, which is yet another nod to the ‘haves and have nots’ theme running through the entire movie. The logo of the band is four straight, thick lines. IIII . Eleven eleven. Duality. There is SO much symbolism in this movie. Jordan Peele has been quoted as saying something to the effect of “EVERYTHING in this movie is intentional.” That’s what elevates ‘Us’ from just another ‘jump-scare-cut/home invasion/psychological thriller/horror/gore’ movie into something that actually has something to SAY. I love this movie. I just hope the Oscar voters remember this when voting comes around. ‘Us’ is a BRILLIANT movie.

  • My take on this film: first off, I do not think Jason was tethered at all. He did not “wander off” at the beach, he went to the bathroom. That figure he saw was the tethered man holding the 11:11 sign (remember they saw the real guy dead, being loaded into an ambulance). Also, keep in mind that both sets of kids are half and half (tethered and human) which could explain the more in tune connection between Jason and Pluto. That could also explain why Jason is weird and sometimes, seemingly detached. Small kids are also very curious, and are not always afraid, but “wondering”. Pluto seemed intrigued by Jason, mimicking his every move, and in that, Jason learned he could control Pluto, hence, making him back up into the fire and killing him. I think Jason caught on to the fact that something was off with his mother…the first time when she killed the evil twin girl at their friends, and the second time when she killed Red. Also, don’t t forget that Red kidnapped Jason, but didnt harm him. Instead, she hid him. There is no telling what Red told Jason before Adelaide got there. Jason is the smartest character in the film. Notice how he asks all the questions, he wants to know what things are, and he’s always perusal and observing. In the end, Jason knew something was wrong with his “mother”, and his behind his mask to sheild himself from the truth, or from her altogether. Notice how he did not embrace her back once she found him in the locker. Jason is the key…because he knows.

  • I think your analysis is great. Here was my take on 11-11 . . . 11-11 is a powerful number in the spiritual community and it represents transformation and awakening consciousness. Thus, 11-11 has a duel meaning just like most everything else in the movie. The Biblical 11-11 represents the wrath of God if humanity continues on its current path of material excess and seeing our fellow inhabitants as ‘other.” However, 11-11 also represents that we can change course through our awakening to Oneness and to our inherent authenticity that does not rely on material excess. It is a matter of becoming aware of our shadow side and accepting it so that we do not unconsciously operate from it.

  • I think 11:11 is like, when you right the number 11 on a paper and place it infront of a mirror, it won’t flip like it should. ((Idk I’ve never tried tho, but this is just a theory.)) I knew Red was the original when she was the only one who could speak English. I think the sign saying, “Find yourself” literally meant finding yourself. I think if anyone had gone to that same spot, their twin would have too, Not just Red and Adeline(?). It’s like me and my twin meeting up in the same spot and same time. 11:11 also means, “Make a wish and it’ll come true”. What if Red and Adeline wished at the same time at 11:11, to find themselves? Of course, you’re just supposed to SEE yourself, not switch places with yourself and that explains why the wish didn’t work truly. Adeline had broken the wish by switching places with Red. She broke the wish and as a punishment, she has to face this and the guilt of knowing what she did to Red. You could also see Adeline was one of the tethered, because she always put herself in harms way when it came down to facing Pluto and umbrae.

  • Red’s uprising plan was heavily influenced by her childhood. The red jumpsuits = her candied apple. The scissors being held in the gloved right hand = the girl playing scissors with her gloved hand during rock, paper, scissors with her boyfriend. Red claiming the tethered were Americans = Hands Across America.

  • I’ve noticed that in the first few scenes with the Wilson family, they’re all wearing navy blue and white clothes, while Adelaide is in just white. Also, the Wilson daughter wears a navy blue shirt with a white rabbit for a while in the beginning. I think it’s to set Adelaide (who is really a tethered) apart from her normal family. The colors they wear also plays some role in the scene where the red frisbee covers the blue and white towel at the beach, which begins Adelaide’s freak out. I’m not 100% sure what the colors mean though

  • The apple on a stick Adelaide is carrying around at the start of the film seemed significant to me. Not sure if this is a Biblical reference to the Original Sin, but she never takes a bite of it, which we see when she drops it on the beach. This feels to stick with the theme of classism and inequality in America. Though each of us aren’t directly responsible for the conditions in this country we ultimately pay the price by being born into it and perpetuating it throughout our lives.

  • Just a Theory that makes a little sense with the ending and has supporting clues pointing out the number 15 jumps out in the movie a lot . I believe that the year before Jason and Pluto were switched the year prior. Hear me out everyone. While at the beach Jason was not making a traditional sand castle he was digging a tunnel that got ruined, as well as his sister Zora says to the white sisters he’s very different and off . Also he was so fascinated with the lighter the whole movie but yet he was able to do the simple trick the year before. I think he was caught in the fire that Adelaide mentioned briefly and her knowing where the tunnel was and took him down and switched him with Pluto which would only take 15 minutes . As well if you notice Pluto he is very friendly and wants attention and love from red which is uncommon from the others from the tunnel. Not to Jason is very off to the normal kids like he to mention he likes to play in closets for instance. I believe at the end Jason reason realizes that him and Adelaide are both from the tunnel and have that emotional connection together that you can see earlier in the movie since they both snap off beat to the song in the car and if you notice Jason snaps upwards which is untraditional and Pluto snaps downwards during the fire shot. But at the end they both silent have that look like they know where each other are originally from and keep it a secret from the rest of the family.

  • for the people in the comments saying the movie isnt about the rich and the poor you need to watch more jordan peele interviews, he says many many times that this movie could be taken as the poor finally getting their chance at the “good life”, and how only few people ever get that chance. adelaide got a taste of it when she switched places with red. this whole movie is sprinkled with hints of poor vs rich theme, with the tethered calling themselves americans, but not having the advantages of being americans seeing as they are forgotten and tossed away as the poor are when society is through with them. with the tethered not having access to proper nutrition, only having rabbit meat their whole lives. now im not saying this movie is only about this one theme but it was stated many times by the director that this was one of his visions. every answer is correct though, so dont think because your answer is different you’re wrong.

  • What many looked over is what was hidden in plain sight. The guy who held the Jeremiah 11:11 sign was killed on their way to the beach. Later while on the beach the son saw him again wearing the red (a clone) with blood tripping off his hand and stand in the position waiting for the others to join him. He, in my opinion, was the first clone to get into position. Thus, his significance is overshadowed by the entire story and Easter eggs. He also showed her the original girl the sign while above ground. Who is he? Did he send the original a message while above ground? Why was he the first clone to get into position? How did he escape first?

  • In the beginning of the movie, young Adelaide is perusal TV when a commercial for Hands Across America comes up before they go to the Carnival. Then when Adelaide goes to the House of Mirrors, she switches places with Red (Adelaide Clone). With Adelaide trapped down there while her clone is up outside with her family, Adelaide creates a plan involving Hands Across America. So the real Adelaide is the one in the red suit. That’s why she dances so well and why Adelaides son gives fake Adelaide a look. He saw that his real mom isn’t the one driving them away in an ambulance.

  • i immediately looked up jeremiah 11:11 in the movie theater when it came up on the screen and it reads, “Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.” THIS WAS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE so i was like oh nooooooo

  • The first trailer i saw of this i was truly creeped out but have to say after seeing the film yesterday I was disappointed, as there was no scares at all, it just felt like a slasher flick. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it, it was well acted, well directed and intentionally funny at times, but I was expecting to be scared shitless but I wasn’t and for me there was no tension. The ending was brilliant though. Just hope Pet Semetary gives me the scares that I want.

  • Another thing I picked up is first: I was thinking if we tie it to social issues, this movie is also about a woman making it out of the “ghetto” and doesn’t want to go back, leaving her peers behind. Maybe that’s how she feels survivor’s guilt, when she doesn’t want to kill the doppelgängers kids, And secondly, ok maybe it is because I am Christian that I’m going that far. But I can see connection between what Jesus did for humanity and what Red did for the doppelgängers. Red was forced to sacrifice her good life for the life below. She became one of them then she led them to freedom then died as a martyr. Jesus made 2 sacrifices when he came down from heaven, and became man (lowered himself from God to man), then died for us all to be free.

  • Theres was a couple issues I had with the movie but still loved it nonetheless, My main issue was the inconsistency of the coping mechanic like when the son makes the copy walk into the flame yet before that the copy was able to move around and do it’s own thing without copying the original son so that was to much inconsistency

  • It’s 100% not a government ploy. There’s NO way they cloned EVERY single person in the world. Think about that. It’s a message about god and the devil, evil vs good. God created 2 entities. One good, one evil. Hence why jeremiah 11:11 kept popping up throughout the movie. And adie’s tether said “God created 2 versions” or something like that. They aren’t clones.

  • The fake mom snaps offbeat too. Though at a first watch you can’t know why. But it makes sense now. All the copies are inferior. Mom has no rhythm and told her friend on the beach she quit ballet because her legs gave out on her. She had kids with an original man but passed along the copy weaknesses to her kids, which is why her daughter wants to give up running because her legs aren’t strong enough, and her son can’t do a simple lighter trick (unlike the other son underground who was succeeding at the trick each time, with a real, working lighter, hence the burns on his face). Underground, the mom has kids with a copy husband, so her’s are half and half too, but are stronger than the above kids in many ways. That’s why below daughter can easily outrun above daughter. It seems like the only thing unique about copy-mom was out of all the copies created/born, she was the only one who understood what she was – a copy, and to some degree, could actually control, or atleast influence her original version. Probably, this is how they even made the switch in the first place. As a little girl, we see original’s dad winning her ( the real one ) a prize above, he asked her if she wanted to stop or keep playing for more. She can’t decide, then looks up to her mom for direction. Mom says she needs to decide. This seems to mean she can’t think that well for herself. In the flashbacks of that scene near the end of the movie, it actually shows copy girl choosing the shirt before real one does.

  • The one that lupita Nyong’o character knew that the red one was the real one if you noticed when she killed the red one she was laughing and kinda the same as every other red one it is shown in the end. Also the son knows the red one was his real mom kinda. If you notice how he says “there is a family in our drive way” he said it normal and he wasnt scared. I don’t know if this is accurate but those are my theories.

  • It also said 11:11 in the tv when it was night when Gabe was perusal the tv also in the clock too when Jason says “look” and the clock says 11:11 btw when in the beach when the frizbee goes to one of the circle of the carpet it counts 11 and adelaide said more and more when she was telling her story to Gabe more and more has 11 letters thats all i found

  • Some themes I picked up on in this film are selfishness, and how we learn. The use of masks was awesome, because masks serve as a way to hide. Also, this movie does touch on class, and what really makes us happy. The Wilson’s had enough, but Gabe wanted what their friends had. As for selfishness…we are naturally selfish, and have to be taught selflessness. Evil Adelaide was selfish to trick Real Adelaide, and stole her life. She was also selfish in the sense that she did not free the other clones. She just went up herself. Real Adelaide showed selflessness in remaining with the clones and teaching them to revolt. Becuase Real Adelaide was human, she could feel, unlike the other clones…so her suffering was something that really should have killed her, but it made her stronger. Evil Adelaide also represents “trying to fit in”. She had to learn how to be human, and over time, she learned what love, fear, and rage was. That was why she was so afraid of Real Adelaide, she knew she would come back and try to reclaim her life. Another theme is “Us” trying to mimic what we see wealthier people do, because the wealthy seem happier. But if you notice, the wealthy family in the movie had all these things, but were very unhappy and alcoholics. And their “things” were unrealiable and could not save them (hence when Kitty asked ophelia to call the police, it played F*** the Police instead). Also, the tethered not having a voice represents the poor and how they are not heard. Poverty is still an issue in America, and it’s almost like the poverty stricken cannot speak for themselves.

  • few more 11/11s that arent mentioned AND a new 1111 theory you actually havent heard: the ambulance number/the formation the family stands in, at the driveway literally looks like: 1111 (11/11) and probably many more like the rock paper scissors (obv they both pick scissors which is symbolic itself PLUS it looks like 1111 AND means both picked the same/twins/etc – And my NEW theory – idk if this matters but 11’s also a prime number so it only divisible by itself or 1 aka two options with one being twice what the other is visually (11 and 1 ) and 11x as much value-wise – if the theme of the movie is the people that live above the line/below the line in the world of the movie AND symbolically in our world then the 11-prime number thing could be intentional too

  • Also I noticed that the porta potties that Jason went to before he noticed the tethered version of the homeless man that the porta potties are lined up like this, “ll ll” the 4 potties have a space in between them like a ratio for example two porta potties to two porta potties both in my imagination signifying 11:11, but this is just something I noticed not that it can be correct.

  • I have a theory behind the scissors besides being symbolic of separation and two blades connected by one but red in her speech said she received cold sharp toys while Adelaide got soft cushy toys she was referring to the toy bunny Adelaide was admiring from her childhood which red h later beheaded showing further resentment

  • The cultural appropriation on the magazine of the wife in the tyler family when they were all at the beach together also aids in drawing a line between the black and white families in a subtle way. Adelaide’s husband tries to follow in the footsteps of the more successful Tyler family husband but always falls short. This shows a struggle within reaching the ideal and privilege of the white upper class. No matter what, the white upper class had more privilege and was unable to see or care about the struggles of others because it didn’t directly affect them. In fact, it was made as more of a joke because the Tyler husband basically roasts Adelaide’s husband about not being able to have the generator or the better boat. This is a direct parallel to the way that society is now as black people struggle to reach similar privileges as whites and then eventually they either are joked about or they make jokes about their struggle. It becomes an understood thing that as a minority ultimate privilege is unattainable and because it’s so bad and unavoidable there’s nothing left to do but laugh.

  • My (now ex, not because of this prank) girlfriend has the same skin tone and eye colour as me and she knew I was going to see Us… she put on a red t shirt and a wig that looked like my hair and she got a clear picture frame and it looked like a mirror…so when I looked in the „mirror” after I saw Us at the movies and I was really confused because it was in the middle of the room and my „reflection” was wearing red, it started smiling creepily, and then my girlfriend said in a low voice ‘Be careful’ and then she laughed creepily (btw I’m a bisexual woman) I literally screamed “F-CK THE F-CK OFF!”and I punched the „mirror” and my girlfriend told me it was a prank, I was scarred…

  • Great movie, but i feel that there were a lil bit of holes in the script that really made me uncomfortable, idk but i just felt like it, altough i really liked it and i cannot wait for see it again! Elisabeth Moss was like 5 minutes and she dominated that damn caracther like DAMN! Love ya elisabeth! Lupita was amazing too, where ur oscar at?

  • The son is a product of a tether and regular person. This would explain why he’s weird. The tethered version of the son is also half regular and half tether. This explains why the sons connection with his tether is strongest. They’re the same. Wouldn’t be much of a twist if they were swapped because it wouldnt matter. They’re the product of the same thing. And if he’s a swapped out tether why can he talk? Makes more sense that he’s unique in the sense that he’s from both worlds, essentially. The mask may represent this fact in some way or something else entirely, Idk.

  • There is no “REAL VERSION” of Jason! Both he and Pluto are half breeds (half tether and half human). Jason gave his mom (clone Adelaide) that look bc he now knows his identity and his mom’s unlike his dad and his sisters. The reason why Jason lacks rhythm is bc he inherited clone qualities from his mom (clone Adelaide).

  • Regardless of scariness, I felt like I n e e d e d the explanation. While both Get Out and Us use unique plot-lines to tell storeis with a deeper meaning, I felt the Get Out plot was more put together/concrete compared to this one. And rather than being afraid, I was curious/confused as to how this would have come to be.

  • Jason isn’t a tether because he understood that the tethers just copy their human counterparts (after being in the closet with his tether) and knew that when he saw him standing in front of the car on fire, all he had to do was walk backwards and his tether would follow, walking right into the flames. I only know this because a friend got violently mad when also he presented this theory and couldn’t explain away that scene.

  • I agree Pluto and Jason were switched before the movie took place. At the end he is looking at his mother wondering if it was safe for them with respect to their secret. Mom reassures son that it is OK and he put down his mask carries on as “normal”. There are other clues, but in this scene it is all in the face. I hope to see an interview with Evan Alex some time in the future for clarity because he had to know the context of the scene in order to act it out.

  • Jason was not replaced. Here’s the reason. Red is good at ballet, Pluto is good at fire trick, Umbrae is good at running, Then Adelaide is bad at ballet, Jason is bad at fire trick, Zora is bad at running, You can see both underground and surface kids inherited their respective mom’s bad or good talent. We can see that Adelaide and Jason are both bad at their talent so Jason was not switch. And also, Pluto’s face burned coz while Jason was always failing to light the lighter, Pluto was always successful burning his face in the process since tethered people just copy the surface people’s movement.

  • I thought the very same things about the son right after perusal Us but where that theory falls apart is that the one with the regular family is able to control the tether version into walking backwards into the flames. The tethers don’t have control over the regular versions, only the regular versions have control over the tethers (to some degree, of course).

  • Jason may really be a tether. He was told that he was “weird” at the beach. The original one can be taken underground by the copy and accidentally/intentionally burned his mouth for him to be unable to speak. And if the Adelaide clone can learn how to speak, he can learn too. butttt- erm who knows??

  • I don’t think the film needs to be any more spelled out than it is. Like in get out Peele gives you all the information, it’s even VERY clear that most of what you are perusal is symbolism and steeped in metaphor. This makes it a film that you actually need to discuss to understand but it’s still very accessible because again, everything is laid out bare.

  • That moment where Jason and his tether are both doing the same movements that lead to the climax of the movie, it’s the tether that’s moving with posture while the real Jason is moving kind of half asleep. The movements put both of them in danger, so it could be interpreted as Jason controlling the tether to save his family, or the tether controlling Jason on Red’s orders. The tether also makes it a point to look at Jason before making a move, almost as if he’s gauging where Jason is and how best to put him in the location he wants him to be. Thus confirming that the tether is actually the real Jason.

  • I thought that tethers were supposed to mimic the original and not the other way around, so how does that explain Pluto’s death. But I also think the evidence that Jason is a tether is present because he is a tether, or more precisely, he is half a tether, as is Pluto. Because his mother was a tether but his father was an original. I don’t know why it didn’t manifest on the daughter though.

  • This movie stumped me completely. I had a very hard time wrapping my head around the concept. Personally, I would have liked to know more about it to understand the concept more, but I don’t know if there is a way to explain it more in the movie without giving away the whole idea of the movie. Thank you for the explanation!

  • Prepare to be blown away by something really interesting! I’m not sure whether it was on purpose or not, but the word in Hebrew for Scissors is Misparayim. It means double numbers or two numbers (Mispar means Number, Ayim is a suffix to all things doubled). The same goes for anything that appears twice (Paamayim), just like eyes (Einayim) or hands (Yadayim) or ever the word doubled (Kiflayim). So when you say Scissors in Hebrew you literally say Two Numbers, which in the movie refers to 11:11! I’m simply blown away…

  • Hi there. The tethered do not share a soul with their surface self, neither to do they control their surface self. Red said that the above was able to experience a better life (the sky, sun, real food, etc.) they had the soul, the below mimicked the above. Also, Red said the government was able to replicate the body but not the soul…hence why the experiment was abandoned to begin with. Bye bye now.

  • Definitely would have preferred more of the backstory. I was on to something, well one thing, when I mentioned to friends that Rorschach may of had some influence but everything else I picking up clues throughout making the connections. It was very distracting. Too many layers. Although Lupita was definitely the freaky talent of the movie, that’s still $11.24 I can’t get back. 🤦🏾‍♀️

  • Me and my friends smoked weed about 10min before going to the cinema to watch Us and I can you tell it was one of the best movie experiences and mindfucks I’ve ever had. I couldn’t and still can’t stop thinking about this movie I’m obsessed with it and Im still thinking of perusal it again replaying the amazing experience!

  • So far the best “Us” analysis I’ve found. There are still a million unanswered questions. But the stuff you pointed out definitely enhanced my appreciation for the movie. I like the idea of Jason being a “shadow,” too, but I don’t know if that is the case. If he were switched the year before, wouldn’t he know he was a shadow? How would he be able to talk so well? Still, an interesting possibility.

  • As much as I like the idea of him being a tethered it does pull away from red switching being an anomaly. If people can just waltz in and out why wouldn’t there have been an uprising sooner? They’re the only two that did it? thought to do it? were successful? It’s an answer that leaves us with more questions so I’ll take it at face value. Both Red and Adelaide’s kids would potentially have inherited trauma and developmental issues. So whether the kids switched or not is a mute point.

  • I think having both would still have a good ending. Without the explanation at the end I feel would be harder to convey the message and give more for a sequel which doesn’t seem like Mr. Peeles style. So with the explanation it gave the ppl who would want an explanation satisfied and the ones who wanted a scare satisfied. In the end I don’t think the main focus wasn’t meant to be scared but thoughtful and worried. There were no scary thing (yes jump scares but like nothing scary). So in the end he comveyed his message in a thriller like movie that made ppl think yes engaged the whole time

  • I think your examinations allow for a discussion of the film we watch, in the way that literature also demands discussion. We use fiction and fantastic elements in stories to better understand individual elements of our multi-faceted lives. Through discussion, enjoyment of art can be taken from “Well, that happened” to “Whoa, I get it now!”, and anyone who has ever solved a puzzle knows the pleasure of deeper understanding. We have all had plenty of puzzles. Peele, specifically, makes his films dense with little Easter eggs that beg for these discussions. He clearly wants us to talk about his movies and grow together. Not only do I think these discussions generally improve the film experience, they also lead to a deeper appreciation of art, in general. Oh shit, was this answer late? My bad. I was eating a sandwich.

  • Yoooo so like. All of these clues completely went over my head. I did notice at the beginning that the mom was totally off beat and I didn’t know that was intentional. But wow. Seeing all these pointed out reaaalllyyy changed my opinion for the movie. Also shows that me, an “intellectual” should pay attention more often

  • This is a useful if extremely literal viewing of the text. It’s more useful as a metaphor if you view the Teathered as homeless. They are a class of people that live under you, have all of the same things you have, just worse. They don’t get delicious food, they get rabbit. They don’t get nice toys, they get scissors. Their grunts and tortured voices are on the streets around us all the time, and that’s the really potent piece of horror in this movie.

  • I think the Jason were introduced too is the real Jason, his tether, the one with the burnt face follows almost his exact movements, especially when Jason realizes this and walks backwards, getting his tether version to walk into the flames, remember, the Jason with the burnt face was literally seconds away from blowing up the entire family by lighting gas under the car.

  • Fluoride is a neurological toxin, while the amount of fluoride in the water is considered safe, the amount of fluoride we breathe in due to industrialization is another concern that needs more substantial studies on this issue. Calling fluoride a conspiracy is dismissing the actual dangers of neurotoxins.
