The part that kills me every time is imagining this scene from the perspective of the mall-goers. Without the context of hearing or knowing about the crew in the trailer outside. Just witnessing a stranger in an obvious old man mask walk into the middle of a food court and descend into insanity and sadness completely unprompted. And they’ll never get any closure of why this happened. It’s beautiful.
I was in a recent car accident and suffered a pretty bad head injury. The passed couple of days the effects of my concussion started to subside, and my head was starting to hurt less and less. I came across this episode on Netflix and when the words “I don’t don’t even wanna be around anymore” came out of Tim’s mouth I started laughing so hard that the pressure in my head increased and I was in severe pain but I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the entire rest of the sketch and I mean I was BALLING laughing. Tears practically shooting out of my tear ducts and my head is in more pain still than it was just after the accident but it was seriously worth it because that shit is the funniest thing I’ve seen in probably a decade. Wow. So simple and so impactful. What an art.
The first time I watched this clip I didn’t really laugh or think it was particularly hilarious. Then the next day I was having a big family dinner and the skit popped up in my mind for no reason in particular and I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing in the middle of a conversation. I love how Tim Robinson says things in slightly unnatural ways sometimes, like at 0:24 when he says “Talks loudly on his phone about his dog is loose” instead of “…about how his dog is loose”. The driver’s ed skit where he says “I can’t know how to hear anymore about tables!” is another great example. I wonder if it is cause even though he and Zach write these skits out, there is probably a good deal of improvising, and sometimes the slightly off stuff is just funnier
I think the legitimately brilliant aspect of I Think You Should Leave is the sense of empathy that Tim brings to the characters. They don’t feel clownish or stupid; you can see their motivations, even if they’re bizarre. If you’ve felt awkward at a party (or in public), or if some random bit of bullshit was the last straw for you, you can grasp where these characters are coming from. They’re wounded people, they’re asinine people, they’re people you’d never want to interact with, but fundamentally they’re still people. This is where Tim Robinson succeeds while Saturday Night Live has failed for the last decade.
I watched this article for the first time with a friend. We had just almost passed away over Coffin Flop and here comes Karl Havoc. I have never pissed myself in my 34 years, but this did it. Neither one of us were sure we would ever breathe again. Now, armed with captioned screenshots, we find ways to relate everything in our life to Karl Havoc. And in the event that we aren’t able to relate everything in life to this sketch… We wouldn’t even wanna be around anymore.

I think the best part of this is I can’t really think of any time when I’d seen face prosthetics intentionally applied poorly. It’s such a time-consuming process that it’s something made sure to always do well, like in the Jackass bits where Knoxville is an old man, it looks good even for comedy. It’s funny seeing how it can be screwed up.
The second he walks in the mail.. I LOSE it!!! Oh my. He literally looks like a article game character. That tiny sweater vest …gets me. That white tuff of hair on top …gets me. His inexplicable voice change …gets me. His vulnerable tirade on camera …gets me. His panic attack and sudden self-awareness …gets me. His comment “What’s that do for the greater good?” gets me. Everything about this sketch is pure gold. My favorite is to watch him suddenly be self-aware of how ridiculous he looks… that his biggest fear that HE is the joke…, like, you watch him break down in the darkest most satisfying comedy sketch I’ve ever seen.
Just saw this and my ribs really do hurt from laughing. I write shorts and when I’m pitching a sketch i tell them it’s all in the physical comedy and comedic timing and that can’t be explained it’s just the writer/performers visualization of the character and get that visualization played out in a live shot . Most of the time the creator has to be the one playing the part because he is the one who sees the humor In their visualization of the scene. The way he stood, moved and talked with the weird face can’t be done by anyone, u can’t learn it, he’s naturally hilarious.
The back of the head is way to large. The arms dent in before the hands. The hands go down to his knees. The fingers all splay apart. The hair is awesome. The eyes look like cut outs. The mouth don’t move so good. The arms are on just to add the biceps on this old man. The Indian vest. The extra back padding. The pants that are a foot too long. The eyebrows are not straight. Lines going down the solid arms. Did I miss any? It took me 10 minutes to watch the whole thing. I laughed so hard the top of my head hurt. Even better than sloppy steaks.
The awful name and opening credits, the cheap production values, the music change when he starts putting on the mask, the laughing make-up assistants, the unnecessary second camera angle, the pause after “Karl’s a lot” the lame proposed hijinks, the anti-climax, the mall, the sped up tme lapse, the second rate mall… It’s all perfect. And that line “I don’t even wanna be around anymore”. Uncanny.
