Honestly if the movies did portray a more one sided duel with Dumbledore thwarting voldemort at every turn, it would make his death in Half Blood prince even more impactful. Since Dumbledore will be established to be a major apparent obstacle to Voldemort, his death would mean a loss of a powerful force opposing the dark lord and thus raising the stakes even further
I think the most crucial part of the conversation was : ” Indeed merely taking your life wouldnt satisfy me I admit.” A revelation of how much hatred Dumbledore had for him that he goes so far as to suggest that he wishes to inflict great pain, both physical and emotional, before killing him. It was by far the most chilling revelation of the whole series. Which also explains y Dumbledore is so unafraid of Voldemort. His sheer hatred far surpasses any residual fear he may have had. Which is a stark contrast to how much he dithered in dealing with the other great Dark wizard Grindelwald. While one explanation is that Grindelwald knew his secrets and Dumbledore was afraid of the emotional pain he could inflict on him were he to confront him and also the blood pact which stopped him from having a magical duel with Grindelwald, the book still implies that he had a degree of conflict in stepping up to deal with Grindelwald. Also he chose not to kill him or condemn him to Azkaban after defeating him which showed that at some level he still had some sympathy and faith in Grindelwalds humanity. On the other hand this one line in Ootp reveals Dumbledores chilling hatred for Voldemort. In fact it’s Voldemorts complete lack of humanity or redeeming qualities which lead to Dumbledore losing all fear of him. He probably treats Voldemort as just a powerful robot whose coding has gone irredeemably wrong and so has no compunction about he inflicting him with great pain. If Tom had had even a bit of humanity left in him I think v would have seen a much more vulnerable Dumbledore in that battle.
Reading every scene with Dumbledore in it is like having your own patronus with you or listening to Fawkes sing or feeling the effects of the Felix Felicis. I don’t think I can explain it, but whenever I was reading a scene with Dumbledore in it, it always had a calming effect on me…like as long as this man is around, nothing could go wrong. The ministry duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort in the book is really amazing and demonstrates what Dumbledore is as a wizard. Every move, every countercurse, every spell, even his demeanor throughout was something to behold. The movie didn’t do that chapter justice, but then again, that’s nothing new, is it?
I think showing dumbledore being stronger than voldi would be great for the movies. Back in the day when finishing book 5 I was sure dumbli would kill him at the end. It made his death in the next book even more devastating. It seems like everything was hopeless when this happened. The most powerful wizard gone. Even in the films, it felt to me like Dumbledore had Voldemort on the ropes in the water cocoon. Behind Dumbledore, Harry gets up and slowly walks up to get involved in the duel. In the split second Dumbledore took to push Harry back out of harms way, Voldemort broke out of the cocoon and rode that change in momentum to turned the tables on Dumbledore, putting him on a defensive footing all the way through the glass attack. It seemed to me Dumbledore was winning and it was only when Harry tried to interfere that Dumbledore lost control of the situation because he had to split his attention to protect Harry. That’s just my interpretation.
As the muggle Voldemort moved towards the unsuspecting muggle Dumbledore with his ‘sharp muggle wand’, he pointed his muggle wand towards muggle Dumbledore and demanded “give me all, that’s in your possession”. Seemingly shocked with this sudden reveal, the muggle Dumbledore seems defeated, bending down and grabbing his chest “aaah, aah aaah”, he grunted. Muggle Voldemort thought that he had won, perusal the muggle Dumbledore grunt in pain like this. Muggle Dumbledore cried for help ” call an ambulance”, and with a quick sleight of hands he draws his ‘blunt muggle wand’, one capable of 9mm avada kedavra, he proved his superior magical abilities and prowess and said “BUT NOT FOR ME”.
What was Fawkes doing there? The theory that makes sense is that Dumbledore took it along as one of his defense mechanism against the killing curse, especially knowing that Fawkes is a phoenix and would re-born after dying. So he used it as a shield just as he used the statues he brought to life. That is not a weakness but shows careful planning. Thats why he was so confident moving towards Voldy without any fear because he knows of his deployed defenses.
I disagree that it took anything away from Voldemort. It was reinforced in the first book and film that the only one Voldemort was afraid of was Dumbledore. In fact the chapter in the Ootp was “The only one he ever feared”. While it did show Voldemort a little weaker in this, it needed to be emphasised just how powerful Dumbledore was and why Voldemort had avoided a confrontation with him. Voldemort did not want to fight Dumbledore, he was somewhat forced to in this case, he did not anticipate help arriving from the Order. This also would have emphasised just how bad things were about to get upon Dumbledores death. It would have created that “oh crap moment on steroids”. We now know Voldemort was cautious of Dumbledore for numerous reasons. 1. Dumbledore knew young Tom when he was a child and what he really was. A thief, a manipulator. 2. He knew he could talk to snakes and knew the chamber was opened during Toms time at School. 3. He was a capable legilimens so probably had glimpses into Toms thoughts and memories before he knew how to block it. 4. Voldemort would have known Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald. 5. Was a distinguished and recognised Wizard. Dumbledore was not going to be a pushover. This should have been used in the movie to make Voldemort MORE human, exposing his weakness, his fears. For me, this was the main reason I went to see the film, certainly they could have added some of these effects in while using the dialogue somewhat.
The film would be cool if they would follow the book. But I still think the duel is very epic and I am satisfied with it. I generally think Voldemort isn’t as frightening in the movies as I imagine when I read the books. So that’s maybe why they made Dumbledore and Voldemort seem equally powerful to prove how powerful Voldemort actually was.
Movies were great yes But I do really want to see the exquisite details on screen boosting the experience of the story much more Do u guys think there should be a web series live action or animated whatever which covers the story in much more depth and which might even be better? I think it is portrayed a little bit better in movies than books,cause there were instance in books where they portrayed voldemort in a kind of weak form,this really breaks the character of voldemort, but on the other hand,in movie, it portrayed that they are probably equal strength,voldemort slightly edges out,but it makes sense due to the build up voldemort getting from movie 1 and book 1, and shows his real power,and fawkes helping dumbledore in books also shows somewhat dumbledore needs help from his pet while voldemort didn’t use nagini for anything
It’s a good article but I think Dumbledore’s blocking of killing curses in several ways, as well as the fact that he rolls with a Phoenix who can swallow them, only showcase his creativity and brilliance. He could’ve easily conjured a shiny shield, but where’s the style in that. If Voldy would’ve won the fight with Fawkes’ defense of Dumbledore, he would’ve instantly become the owner of the elder wand which we all know is not the case. I enjoy your articles, but sometimes you really need to think through the content more.
I just thought dumbledore could block avada kadavra because he has the elder wand, I know it doesn’t say anything about it in the books but it’s supposed to be the strongest wand ever created right so it makes sense also it just looks amazing on screen the book version on screen wouldn’t of been as enjoyable to watch imo.

In the book, I think Fawkes was just reacted instinctively. If Fawkes was not there, Dumbledore would just deflect the fire snake while commanding another object to take the green light. D. didn’t try to kill – he used only basic charm and transfiguration while V. was using the killing curse excessively. D. was clearly winning with ease in the book.
the one in the book sounds like the badass most powerful wizard the world had seen since the founders of hogwarts and shows why VOLDEMORT was actually afraid of dumbledore. The one in the movie sounds more like they equal. Which i guess still is scary to voldemort since he doesn’t want to be weaker to anyone.
In the movie version I would say Dumbledore had a special circumstance as well as his red spell would be being amplified by the elder wand allowing it to block Avada Kedavra where most else would be able. Think about it Dumbledore is extremely powerful by himself then amplified by the elder wand his spell would be supercharged and should be strong enough to fight of even the killing curse.
Dumbledore could block Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra because he is using the elder wand to fight Tom a wand literally made by death so of course it can block a killing curse these are special circumstance too like you said dumbledores the most powerful wizard and he’s has the most powerful wand I’m sure the elder wand was powerful for a reason and could block avada kedavra and I like the books better than the movies love the website
The one thing bothers me from book 5, that everyone who duels almost every time use non-verbal spells. I understand it when the Order members or Death Eathers do it, but the students only started to learn it in book 6. The other thing is, most of the spells have the same effects (pushing the opponent backwards): expelliarmus, reducto, levicorpus, rictusempra, etc.).
The movies are its own canon and i love both book and movie canon but I prefer the movies than the books because they are my childhood and was lucky enough to enjoy all of them in cinema also they just perfect in every way. But there is also some stuff I would of loved to see that was only in the books.
The analysis somewhat overlooks that Dumbledore’s interactions with lost/evil individuals is always one of mercy and forgiveness, no matter how far gone a person is. So it would make sense for him to use non-lethal attacks initially. He is also one to advocate justice over blind violence. So it seems likely he’d want to apprehend what is to him, a criminal. Him ‘holding back’ doesn’t mean he feels he is powerful enough he has the privilege to hold back(thinking he cannot be beaten), but instead, is an expression of morality – killing voldemort would not be enough, justice would be more fitting.
I believe during their duel, dumbledore is trying to stall allowing the aurors to arrive able to witness for themselves that Voldermourt has returned. Dumbledore also knows atleast that Voldermourt is able to return if killed meaning trying to kill him would be worthless, even possibly more dangerous.
I wonder if the two versions, film and book could have been combined for dramatic effect. Certainly seeing statues exploding on screen would have been visually effective. Second, how many bits of dialogue have we seen in other movies during sword fights between antagonists in past movies? It seems that could have been used to effect as well.
video idea: Once lily and james found out they had been betrayed, James tries to hold voldemort off enough time that lily could grab hold of harry. It specifically says that once lily got harry she locked the door and started blocking the door with obstacles, so my question is: “How come lily didn’t just grab harry and disapperate out of there?” That would have saved both hers and harry’s lives, so why didn’t she do it? If there is an obvious answer in the book that I just can’t remember then please corect me
The movies, time and time again, fail to really display the magic in Harry Potter. The true magic. This scene is emblematic of that tendency. The movie fails to capture the magic that Dumbledore and Harry possess which Voldemort does not. Love is more powerful than the fear of death, which is why Dumbledore can be so unconcerned in this instance. It gets much worse in the following movies, particularly Hallows…
Actually,there were many times we see avada kedavra being blocked by some sort of charm shield or spell,and i can’t understand why that is.The graveyard scene,ginny blocked the avada kedavra from bellatrix( in the movie),then bellatrix blocked molly’s killing curses as well,and of course harry vs voldemort in the hogwarts battle.I really would like to know how that happened.
It actually is possible to stop the Killing Curse. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows it states, “More Killing Curses flew past Harry’s head from the two remaining Death Eaters’ wands; they were aiming for Hagrid. Harry responded with further Stunning Spells: Red and green collided in midair in a shower of multicolored sparks, and Harry thought wildly of fireworks, and the Muggles below who would have no idea what was happening-“
i think expelliarmus often cited as meaning “disarm charm” i think is incomplete. i think a better definition is “disarm spell charm”….we see this used on wands premptively because wands are the source of the spell. but it the spell has already been cast then if we take the new definition i propose it makes sense. it shows true wizard mastery of fundamental spell power to be able to to the disarm spell and use it defensively. i think its an epitomy of a good defense is a good offence and dumbledores expelliarmus is rare and further shows his power as the only other time we see this is in extreme circumstance.
Dumbledore was much more powerful than Voldemort. Lol Dumbledore didn’t need Faux. Like any loyal pet, it will help the owner whether its needed or not. But it does show that no matter what voldy send his way, Dumbledore has an answer. I love the book version better because it proved Dumbledore’s power with his effortless battle and Dumbledore delivered, to me, the most sinister line “There are other ways of destroying a man. Merely taking YOUR life wouldn’t satisfy me, I admit.” That’s the version of Dumbledore that joined Grendelwald 😆….Another great article guys! 👏
I enjoy perusal your articles about Harry Potter. The problem I have is the comparisons between Books and Movies. All should realize the movies were made for the people who may have never heard of or knew much about the series. They wanted the fans to like the movies also, but along with the author of the books there had to be changes made. Instead of your complaining just be grateful for what you have.
Tbh the fact that Dumbledore is the only one able to fight Voldemort doesn’t diminish Voldemorts power in my mind. Whilst Voldemort might not be a threat to Dumbledore he is still a massive threat to everyone else and Dumbledore is their only shield to safeguard them. Considering Dumbledore dies later on then such a loss is soul shattering for the good guys. Add to this Dumbledore is aware he cannot kill Voldemort and at best he is stuck in a battle of attrition with him, one where Dumbledore would inevitably lose in the long run. As powerful as he is he cannot fight Voldemort forever. Whilst Voldemort is indeed very powerful his main threat comes from him being practically immortal.
Dumbledore was NOT afraid of Tom. However Tom/Voldemort WAS afraid of Dumbledore. Proof? He NEVER sought out a fight with Dumbledore directly. Dumbledore stumbled upon him at the Ministry otherwise Voldemort would have fled. Voldemort was a coward and always at ease letting others do his dirty work unless it was easy prey.
Dumbledore was wielding the Eldar Wand, with the Eldar wand you cant loose a duell, if you are his true master. Also i think that Grindelwald did not really loose to Dumbledore, when it came to Duelling, during their final battle, I rather think, that Dumbledore must have convinced Grindelwald during their battle, that Grindelwald was in the wrong, so that he surrendered to Dumbledore, which would explain why he could be captured, never tried to escape Nurmengrad and also felt remorse for his deeds during his entire time spent in Nurmengrad.

In the book you can tell he’s calm and in control because the book literally tells you he’s is but in the movie every spell Voldemort uses is immediately countered by dumbledore and it makes Voldemort look like he’s the one struggling to keep up not the other way around. Rewatch the scene of dumbledore sending the fire back and putting him in the ball of water.
Faux – The Phoenix – was of Dumbledore and whether he wished it or not Faux would always be around like Nagini is always around Voldemorte, Faux also got disappeared as soon as Dumbledore Died and never came back, No Wizard posses Phoenix at tht time and Dumbledore being the only one because it was also a part of Dumbledore itself
Without Fawkes intercepting the killing curse a split second before it hit a bewildered Dumbledore, Dumbledore would have been killed by Voldemort in the Order of the Phoenix. There’s really no debating that. Without the Elder Wand Dumbledore would be in over his head against Voldemort. Even with the Elder Wand he very, very nearly got killed. Voldemort is on another level.
I think Dumbledore seems more powerful in the book because it’s from Harry’s perspective. He was probably hiding his struggle both to keep his all powerful image in Harry’s mind and intimidate Voldemort. After this he retreated into his office and did no more impressive magical feats for the rest of the story. He later claimed that he was weakened by destroying a horcrux but I believe he had just been expending himself in this battle
Avada Kedavra is blockable. End of story !!! I’ve read the books like 10 times and I never knew this was a thing until I saw some Harry Potter youtube websites repeating this same myth. Granted, I’ve never read the english version of the book, so I thought that it might got lost in the translation? So I went and checked my “Slovak” version of the book to see what Moody actually said about it. The Slovak translation says: “There is no countercourse. It can’t be stopped.” The English translation says: “There is no countercourse. There is no blocking it”. I think that the person who was translating the book from english to slovak correctly assumed that Moody wasn’t actually talking about the fact that you can’t block the green beam of light from hitting you, but rather he meant that you can’t stop the effect of the spell. Once it hits you there is no countercourse and no way of stopping it. I understand that this scene is written a little bit ambiguously, but it makes much more sense this way.
I as kk wats thought Dumbledoee blocked it because the elder wand was the most powerful wand. But I kept thinking but the killing curse is unblock-able only Harry is able to do it because of Love which Lilly Sacrificed herself so her son could live. But would of been cool if the wand bit was true because Voldemorts obsession which immortality.
Voldemort won the duel at last as per the book, by possessing Harry in front of Dumbledore. An impossible feat indeed. Since none could ever lay hands on Harry in front of Dumbledore. Voldemort just did that and made Dumbledore feel helpless. Thus Tom Riddle won that battle decisively leaving Dumbledore to an helpless state. Dumbledore just couldn’t free Harry using any of his powerful spells. However Dumbledore dominated the duel for most of the time as per the book. The unbiased perspective. But at the end Voldemort did make Dumbledore feel helpless. This was too much for Dumbledore, since Dumbledore didn’t have a idea how to free Harry from the coils of that “evil creature” with red eyes. Harry freed himself due to his own callibre of resisting Voldemort through the most powerful magic of just four letters, known as LOVE. Voldemort also saw the aurors and Fudge, the minister of magic, and therefore disappeared from the scene. Dumbledore also admitted (to Harry) that even his most powerful and complex spells would have proven ineffective if Voldemort was in full power. This shows how powerful Voldemort is.
Dumbledore could not have possibly lost the duel, even if Fawkes saved him. He held Voldemort off by blocking an unblockable spell repeatedly – and working magic in the background to 1) protect Harry and 2) keep Bellatrix pinned – and never once directed a killing curse at Voldemort to gain an advantage. Dumbledore is the greatest wizard in the series (dark or not), no doubt.
The fact that fawkes took the unbreakable curse is indeed a very important point. I like the theory of dumbledore being a bit too confident in battling voldemort, although being a master duelant in the first place. A Phoenix dies and is reborn in the very same moment. There is no harm done by “dying”. So I think that whilst dueling voldemort, dumbledore played his wildcard with fawkes. Is he prepared? Sure! Did he expected fawkes to dive into the curse and save him? Maybe. Probably it was intended. But as I said earlier, I really like the thought of dumbledore being a slight bit too confident. Anyway. I hated the duel from the film. It took everything from it being classy and skilful and masterly composed, and turned it into two men pointing their wands at each other whilst screaming in supposed agony.
I do think that Dumbledore with the Elder Wand could beat Voldemort, I’m not sure that he easily dominates him quite to the degree a lot of fans think though. I also think that its possible Dumbledore isn’t quite as confident as he seems. Dumbledore is a master of remaining calm even in the worst situations. So I think him seeming like he hasn’t a care in the world and like he’s not remotely threatened by Voldemort, doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how he actually feels. Acting like you are unconcerned in a fight is an extremely powerful psychological tool that can really unbalanced an opponent. Im certainly not saying Dumbledore is afraid, but maybe not quite as completely and utterly unconcerned as he seems. I think we get a hint that Dumbledore is more wary of Voldemort than it might seem, all the way back in the first book when Dumbledore and Mcgonagall are talking shortly before Hangrid turns up to deliver baby Harry. Mcgonagall talks about Dumbledore being more powerful than Voldemort and he essentially tells her hes not so sure and that Voldemort has achieved some magical feats that even he hasn’t dreamed of. Mcgonagall replies that it’s only because Dumbledore is too decent to try the things Voldemort has. Which I think is an excellent point that it’s not because Dumbledore couldn’t its because he wouldn’t. I still think its interesting though that while Dumbledores allies feel certain he’d absolutey wipe the floor with Voldemort he seems a little less certain. To be fair although Dumbledore is highly aware of his skill he is still somewhat humble.
This scene was by far the coolest scene in the books and the movies somehow completely managed to destroy the vibe of it. The statue springing up from it’s plinth and blocking the spell and then suddenly Voldemort realising it was Dumbledore was simply a spine-chilling moment raising our adrenaline to greater heights and the movie didn’t give any of such feels. One of the many reasons I don’t like the movies! 🤷🏻
Personally, I think the film had the right idea making them seem more equally matched then Dumbledore just absolutely curb stomping Voldemort movies do not need to be carbon copies of books Also, in the books, voldemort’s strategy is basically block spells and then fire killing curses until one of them hits. That’s not much better than a gunfight in my book. However, having him cast avada kedabra once and it not working and then having him try other things is a much better way for this fight to work. I think the adding in the statues and faux would have made the fight too confusing to follow on the screen
I always accept dramatic changes that are needed in order to take a story from book to film – so long as they work. As good as the HP films are, they are poor compared to the books. Not just that “the books are better” which is always the case in these situations, but poorer than they could have been and should have been. The fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort SHOULD have come over as more one sided, leaving everyone to ask (as they did when reading the books) “Just how powerful IS Dumbledore? How?” – which gets the answer in the last book: 1) he was supremely talented, and likely better than Tom Riddle even without 2) the Elder Wand, which took his bad-ass power and sent it to the moon. The next fight that they got utterly wrong was the final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort in the last film. I do not have the time, energy, nor will to lay that one out – but I found it totally lacking in the film. Far more impactful if it had been a standoff, with Voldemort unsure how Harry was still alive, and then Harry’s calm monologue… echoing Dumbledore in the book 5 fight. Harry, now the teacher, trying to explain to the utterly dense Tom Riddle that… no matter how dark Tom has gone, no matter how far he reached to power… he’d lost from the start. Then it should have been just as final and quick as in the book: “So it all comes down to this, doesn’t it?” whispered Harry. “Does the wand in your hand know its last master was Disarmed? Because if it does…I am the true master of the Elder Wand.

Dumbledor book: calm Dumbledor movie: CAAAAAAAALLLLLLMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love how congruent the book is to his character (not because it is the source material) but rather because of now knowing his backstory. I don’t mean just because Dumbledor had prior interactions with Voldemort as Tom and he knew him as he grew into his emo phase but rather that he will always see anyone that isn’t Grindelwald as nothing more than a fodder. Hell, I don’t think even Grindelwald can compare to Dumbledor as both couldn’t face each other due to their promise to not fight one another.
Sorry, but saying Dumbledore is the loser of this duel is just not acurate in any way. Dumbledore clearly planed to use Fawkes for something like blocking when he came there. How else would Fawkes be there when he is normally in Dumbledores office in the tower? I don’t think Dumbledore took his bird with him to show Voldemord how cool his bird looks.
I disagree with your assessment of Dumbledore losing because Fawkes had to save him. Any more than the statues saved him. All of these things are part of Dumbledore’s power. Which other Wizard do we ever hear of who is able to keep a Phoenix as a familiar? It offers magical protection, the same as any defensive spell (and more). It’s not that Dumbledore NEEDED saving, it’s that he was ABLE to have multiple lines of defense.
This scene, the moment I had been waiting for through the whole film, the main reason I went to go see it… ruined the movie for me. The first four movies were fairly good, but this was the point where I lost interest in them and just went back to the books. I don’t want to just talk trash, I know a lot of people worked really hard on these movies, but I really did not like how Dumbledore was depicted at all after this. Something happened once they made it to the 5th movie and I never could get into them again after this.
i think its kind of stupid having an attack that is unblockable like i thought it would come down to the power of the two opponents like whoever was stronger or able to conjure up more magic would be the winner like if a 1st grader could just learn the killing curse and then blast voldermort with it first thus making him the winner seems a little bit silly to me i think it would be much more practical that because voldermort is a very powerful and talented wizard that this is the reason why he can bounce deadly attacks off of him so if dumbledore was more powerful or of equal power i think it makes much more sense for him to block or atleast divert the attack to have it ricochet and bounce off of his spell and have it sent spiraling else where it would also stand to reason since not a lot of people can match or be more powerful as voldermort at the time that this would make the killing curse unblockable to most people since most people are genuinely weaker then him and the fact that it basically works this way for everyone else with every other spell other then the killing curse also seems a tad plot hole like to me even in other series like lord of the rings when there is a battle between Sauron and Finrod Felagund Finrod puts up an amazing fight but Sauron was just in a league of his own.
But that’s the point that most people miss and that HP fans hate to talk about, because it’s a giant, gaping plothole. So a statue protects you from avada kedavra. Now, obviously, so does, say, a stone wall. What about a wooden wall? What about… A suit of armor? The lack of proper explanation of the mechanics of magic makes the HP universe highly unsatisfactory as far as fantasy goes. Tolkien, for example, made no such mistake, as he never even tried to make a reader understand how magic really works in his world. I know that some resent this comparison, and rightfully so, but even a greater number of people keep comparing HP to LOTR, and that honestly frustrates me. TL;DR: Avada Kedavra is absolutely useless in HP universe except for rare cases of an extremely short range fights in an enclosed space, because in all other cases you can just keep flinging ashtrays, chairs and other clutter in front of it and block it with minimal effort, and don’t even get me started on simple dodging.

I can easily debunk this since you made two articles with no clear answer, Dumbledore was able to block Avada kedavara using the elder wand since the elder wand is the most powerful wand in existence it would make sense that maybe one of the many abilities the elder wand possesses is the ability to copy other wands tail feathers or cores which makes the elder wand transferrable this would mean that Dumbledore used his magic and the elder wands power to change the core of his wand to make it the same as Voldemorts following the same explanation in the deathly hollows where he stated he cannot fatally wound hairy due to their wands sharing the same core, they can wound but not fatally kill, this would make sense that the elder wand has the ability to copy its weaker versions of itself and use its own power against it if the elder wand isn’t strong enough for that? dumbledore definitely is, this is my theory this would mean Dumbledore was able to copy the circumstances harry was under during the goblet of fire, because if you noticed every other person who got attacked by the dark spell was killed instantly even Cedric Diggory, so I believe my theory stands.

The only part of this that i think they should have kept from the books are the statues blocking the killing curse. Maybe some of the dialogue also, but really, Fawkes being excluded entirely was a good thing. There’s a bit too much going on with the one-armed Centaur. The rest of the duel playing out as it did in the film was a good thing.
If Dumbledore is wielding the Elder Wand, I imagine he would be able to deflect a killing curse with whatever spell he wanted to since the wand supposedly ensures its owner’s victory. The Elder Wand can’t go having its owner killed in the most predictable wizarding fashion ever, it’s got a reputation to uphold.
Dumbledore was aware that Voldemort had split his soul so he wasn’t trying to Kill him. Dumbledore was aware that it was essential that the horocruxes were to be destroyed before they kill Voldemort. There is no way to use this duel to judge who was stronger.. however Voldemort was clearly going all out and Dumbledore was holding back.. Simply implies Dumbledore was stronger.
Because Dumbledore was more powerful. It’s that simple. Always been and always will be. Voldemort was humiliated in that battle, with Dumbledore not even trying to kill him and being absolutely relaxed the entire battle. He had to resort to possessing Harry (and that’s the only thing that made Dumbledore worry), and when not even that worked, he ran away like a bitch and was so afraid of challenging Dumbledore again that he actually sent Draco and his Death Eaters to assassinate him. Dumbledore didn’t even want to harm or destroy Voldemort’s body, because he knew that specific body (containing Harry’s blood and so his mother’s protection) had to remain intact for Harry to survive at the end.
I love the subtlety of harry thinking things are safe when Dumbledore has Voldemort trapped in the water sphere and approaching Dumbledore to marvel and dumbledore throwing harry back knowing this battle is no where close to being over. It really shows how the 2 view Voldemort differently at that point in the story. Harry knows voldemort is powerful but thinks dumbledore is stronger and has always had fate and been comfortable around dumbledore. Considering that it is widely known that Dumbledore was the one wizard that Voldemort always feared, I was actually surprised that Voldemort did not flee at the sight of Dumbledore, choosing instead to give it his all. Also it didn’t end in a stalemate. Dumbledore clearly won. Voldemort went full throttle and failed to kill Dumbledore. Since Dumbledore succeeded in restraining Voldemort, but Voldemort did not succeed in killing Dumbledore, Dumbledore was the winner. And yes, Dumbledore is the more powerful wizard of the two. It doesn’t matter if his wand was more powerful. How Dumbledore managed to get the elder wand in the first place was by winning it. Sure, Dumbledore may not be invincible in comparison to Voldemort. But he was still more powerful, however slightly.
Keep in mind the second battle going on during this one… Voldemort is trying to get at Harry. Dumbledore is not fighting for his life, but both his own and Harry’s. Had they been one-on-one without distraction and without the complication of horcruxes (which led Dumbledore not to try to kill him but to capture him), it wouldn’t have been close. Dumbledore in canon, in the book, single handedly captured (not killed) Voldemort’s inner circle on his way up to Voldemort. Without challenge. Then he protected Harry without difficulty. And Voldemort fled.
You said that Voldermort was only scared of two things, death and Dumbledore. All throughout Harry Potter and the half-blood Prince Dumbledore is constantly telling Harry that Voldermort is scared of love because he never experienced it, and hugely underestimated it’s power. So Voldermort was scared of three things. Death, Dumbledore and love.
Grindelwald would have absolutely schooled Voldermort, possessing the Elder Wand legitimately and having knowledge of ancient magic and wielding it on a scale that would make Voldy look like a toddler. Am I the only one that thought the movie duel was stupid? They pretty much changed most of the fight. The movies are obsessed with 2 spells connecting in mid air. In reality, it is extremely uncommon for this to happen and only happens once in the books. It annoys me every other time it happens in the movies.
Dumbledore knew he could not kill Riddle, becasue of the prophecy. He was not even trying. They even talk about it during the duel, when Riddle asked why he was not trying to kill. Dumbledore knew he could have easily killed Riddle. This is evidenced by Rowling, going out of the way, to show Harry reacting to overwhelming power of the spell Dumbledore used. This was the biggest clue in the entire duel, even without trying to kill, Dumbledore cast the mosty powerfull spell of the duel. Also, the relative ease with which he dealt with all Riddles attacks. Again Rowling went out of her way to show Dumbledore as being relaxed and unconcerned, right up until Riddle tried a possession attack on Harry (the one thing he had no control over). Additionally, people forget that Dumbledore didn’t just defeat Riddle and drive him off, he also defeated Bellatrix at the same time …… the two most powerful wizards on the dark side, and he easily dealt with both at the same time….calmly as though not a care in the world. And we also know it was not purely the elder wand, since he won it from Grindelwald (people talk about how it might be won with a trick in the beats stryline, but in the book Rowling talked about people being awed at perusal them duel). Dumbledore simply was not trying to win, try because he knew it would only delay riddle who would come back again (perhaps when he had less control over events). So all he did was play with Riddle and push him to retreat, to protect Harry .

Dumbledore was the only reason why Hogwarts was never affected directly by Voldemort. He knew Dumbledore was far more gifted, had more studies and more experience. Dumbledore even beat Grindelwald whim he had a personal relationship with which would’ve made that fight considerably harder. Let’s not forget Voldemort only affected Britain, however Grindelwald terrorized the World. In the move they make Dumbledore too crippled in the book he was only deflecting Voldemort’s curses and was not intending to kill him (he knew that would’ve been useless since he already knew about the Horcruxes and maybe not even try to put him in Jail as he could’ve gotten killed there again and comeback with an Horcrux and look for Bellatrix or Wormtail again. In the book Dumbledore said he was shaken after the fight but let’s not forget age here Dumbledore is maybe 40 years longer and Yes! Voldemort’s plan was to stay away from Dumbledore as far as possible, perhaps Voldemort could’ve won against Dumbledore but remember that Dumbledore was far wiser and that was Tom’s worst attribute, he was always blinded by power, he didn’t even dare chance it with Dumbledore
In the movies, and yeah this isn’t the books but I imagine JK Rowling was overseeing parts of the movie’s developments, they show Dumbledore have a sort of lapse in concentration when he throws harry back. It’s at that point that Voldemort is able to break out of the water bubble. Watch around 2:00 mins in where Voldemort does something, looks like he pushes Harry back. Dumbledore breaks concentration for a split seconds to check on Harry and then Voldemort seizes the moment and breaks free.

His immortality is tied to his split soul and horcruxes not anything regarding his body itself or its functions. If anyone can find something canon that supports the point I’d be interested.
It might have been a good idea to mention Dumbledore had the Elder Wand during this duel, the unbeatable wand! It also never states, as far as I know, that because Voldemort is immortal that he doesn’t get tired or have to do other normal things like eat and sleep to stay at the top of his form. Dumbledore would have won the duel eventually but without having to kill Voldemort, just like he did with Grindlewald.
In my opinion, Dumbledore would’ve whipped the dark lord’s ass up and down that atrium if he wanted to. He didn’t even look like he was trying whereas Voldemort was taking out all of his strongest shit. But he deemed it useless to waste time in such a manner as he knew about the horcruxes. Disagree if you like.
In terms of “power” and how one would measure it, here I’ll give it a go. For starters, Killing is much easier to do than protecting; You must protect yourself and anyone else you’re trying to defend while also trying to deplete the person of energy. (which Voldemort wouldn’t run out, however in this situation that matters not to Dumbledore.) Dumbledore showed his true power by multitasking and figuring out multiple strategies of offence and defense. Voldemort just had 1 goal….Kill…Kill….Kill….and with all of his power towards one goal was not able to overcome Albus who completed all of his goals: Protecting himself,harry, and showing the ministry the truth. Power is not easily measured when it comes to god-like entities When the power of said wizards stalemates the next obvious question is; how efficient were they in completing their ambitions.
Dumbledore vs Voldemort Dumbledore is more powerful according to me as he knows so many ways to stop Voldemort and his Dark Magic Especially with the Elder Wand as it is the strongest wand of all time and could do much more than what Voldemort knows about in the field of Dark Magic Voldemort was talented in Dark Magic but Dumbledore was equally knowledgeable in Defense against the Dark Arts. Also Dumbledore is one of the things who Voldemort feared probably because of something we Dumbledore can do which Lord Voldemort can do nothing about.
I think the most important thing to remember about Dumbeldore, was that he really believed in the prophesy, and would do anything to help drive Harry toward that end. Him defeating Voldimort wouldn’t have allowed for the destruction of the horcrux that Harry sort of was. Based on the book’s representation of the fight, it was much less of a stalemate and more of a fight with entirely differing goals.
The deatheaters did not actually think Voldemort was Dumbledores equal. In the battle of ministry, Bellatrix was trying to warn him……”He is here, he is below”. They knew that Riddle was clearly scared of Dumbledore. “the only one he ever feared” was not just a tag line for good wizards, it was clearly well believed by his followers.
So I know this is a bit late but yet I think I’d like to weigh in here. While Dumbledore’s goal was delaying Voldy from departing to show that he was indeed back, the question is more better answered in a few things. Bear in mind a few things. First is that Dumbledore is incredibly gifted. In Deathly hallows it talks about how even at school he was a genious. How he was constantly making discoveries and developing new ideas. He dueled and defeated Grindelwald who had the Elder Wand. Now it is possible that Grindelwald didn’t go full stop because of their friendship but Dumbledore does state that he was perhaps a bit more skilled. Now with that in mind, Dumbledore, now far more experienced than he was 50 years prior, posesses the Elder Wand and is dueling Voldy. It’s no secret that Tom Riddle dove into the depths of certain magic but as Dumbledore says, “Of other types, you remain woefully ignorant.” It’s implied here that what Dumbledore speaks of is love but it could be that he’s speaking of other things too. The other thing that’s important to know is that while Voldemort can’t be killed due to his Horcruxes, he isn’t imortal in the traditional sense with unlimited energy. His power does still have it’s limits. The Horcruxes are simply safeguards in case he did actually die. A way for him to return should his body be destroyed.
To understand who’s more powerful, one has to understand what type of magic is being used during the dueling. During the Lighting magic duel, Dumbledore’s lighting jet was seen pushed back, but my guess is, it’s because he’s afraid of collateral damage, namely Harry. Voldemort then used Fire magic, which Dumbledore counter with Water magic. Here, Dumbledore was slightly more powerful. But he knew he can never truly drown Voldemort – the guy doesn’t have his soul on him. He can’t die. Voldemort next attacked with necromantic magic, which Dumbledore defend himself with Light magic. Here, Voldemort has slight advantage. Next, Voldemort used Telekinesis (Mysticism) magic to attack with glass fragments – and Dumbledore used Alteration magic to alter the attack into glass dust. If allow to battle on, each wizard will try different class of magic and each will more or less win some and lose some. And as the battle rages on, each wizard magic force will be drain. Voldemort might exhaust himself and his soul scattered, like in the first Harry Potter. He won’t die however. If Dumbledore is the first to have his magic drained, then most likely, he “will” die. I believe Dumbledore will win the duel, but he cannot recover after that duel – whereas Voldemort can, and no one will be able to stop him. Even if Voldemort is defeated, he will return. Dumbledore will die of old age and no one can stop Voldemort then. No. It’s better to groom Harry for the final blow, one and for all.
The real answer is given in the books as to the means by which the killing curse works. It’s explained that the killing curse requires the strength of intent to kill to make the killing curse work. That being said, it could be said that the curse relies on will power itself to overwhelm the will to live of the curse’s target. So the thing that made Voldemort so dangerous is that he could overwhelm anyone with the killing curse, because his will was second to none. But if that will is equaled by another’s will you really can’t use the killing curse because it couldn’t overwhelm the other’s will to live. Dumbledore is man who had outlived, outfought, overwhelmed people of a much stronger backgrounds; Voldemort knew that his will is equaled by Dumbledore and could not be killed by the killing curse, thus the need for the use of other dark spells to try and kill Dumbledore.
I think Dumbledore didn’t go all out in his duel against Voldemort because he wanted to give Minister Cornelius Fudge a rude awakening regarding Voldemort’s return “See this, Cornelius! He has returned, yes, Voldemort has returned and he is prepared to rule the world with unbridled malice and cruelty unless he is stopped. Voldemort’s focus was purely on the fight and killing Dumbledore. Dumbledore on the other hand was thinking about protecting Harry and being aware of where he was. In the books Harry kept trying to get up and join the fight so Dumbledore had to keep him pinned. He was also thinking about stalling Voldemort long enough for the Auror’s to arrive. He also knew killing him was pointless and if Harry was ever to be rid of the part of Voldemort inside him then Voldemort had to kill it. Dumbledore’s focus was only half on the fight while Voldemort was going balls out. One on one no distractions then Dumbledore curb stumps and Levi corpus’ him straight to his bed chambers for punishment
I re-readed this duel yesterday and my opinion is the following: Dumbledore would have lost if the Ministry didn’t arrive but NOT because he is weaker than Voldemort, but simply because he was old (so Voldemort would outlast Dumbledore in terms of stamina), didn’t experience a duel in a while and most importantly; unlike the Dark Lord, he was not going for the kill. If this where Voldemort vs Albus in his younger days when he did actively use dark magic, the duel would likely have been very different.
We know that Dumbledore is noble enough to not try to kill Voldemort, But at this point Dumbledore also suspected that Voldemort was using Horcruxes. He may not have known how many yet, or the circumstances behind it, but he had guessed that Voldemort was using them, so he knew that even if he wanted to that he couldn’t kill him.

This is one of my favorite scenes. I mean it’s not completely accurate to the book, but it was really cool to watch. The nuance in the acting. If you watch closely you see Ralph Fiennes (playing voldemort ) let his face show a flicker of fear/concern as soon as Dumbledore steps out of the fireplace. Very cool. Also, Dumbledore wouldn’t have killed him then, it would’ve done nothing but delay his next return. Dumbledore was the only person who knew the whole prophecy at that moment. He KNEW Harry had to be the one to eventually kill him.
Dumbledore came with the elder wand, he came to protect harry. He did not plan to reveal voldemort until he saw him in the hall. At that point he knew or assumed that Voldemort had a horxus out there hidden. Knew that killing Voldemort might hurt him but it wouldnt actually kill him. In fact Dumbledore knew that if he killed this part of his soul it would take longer to destroy him. He as well did not want to risk that the possibility that harry could possibly be the last horcus and might have worried that if he destroyed this part of the soul then the part of the soul that lived inside harry might actually kill him. This is why Dumbledore didnt just dual Voldemort to kill. Dumbledore understood the prophecy in its fullest. As well Dumbledore knew of a way for harry to possibly survive. This was Dumbledore after all. He unlike most understood about the old magic. The magic that was around before wands. The magic that came from love and hatred. So if you ask me Dumbledore might not have been trying to kill but when Voldemort possessed harry it was to taunt him. He knew he wasnt going to get Dumbledore to kill harry. You might be right Voldemort realized a staight on attack wouldnt work and attempted to use harry to attack but the moment he possesed harry found it to be painful.
