Tufts University is renowned for its unique and historic mascot, Jumbo the elephant. The term “jumbo” was first used to describe something humongous until Jumbo, a male African elephant owned by P.T. Barnum, a Tufts trustee and benefactor, became the official mascot. Jumbo was the largest elephant known at the university. However, Tufts University’s mascot is much more specific and historic. The Tufts community gathered to unveil a life-sized bronze statue of their unique mascot, Jumbo the elephant, this fall to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the world famous circus.
The story of how Alabama became associated with the “elephant” goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade assembled a great football team. The University of Alabama Crimson Tide, also known as Big Al, is the costumed elephant mascot of the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
