  • I like how these form a story through the ads; Segata starts off as a SEGA henchman beating people into buying SEGA Saturns, gets a job as a mall Santa, trains up his knowledge of martial arts, breaks into a house to “rescue” the trapped victims, almost gets killed by the zombies of people he killed, escapes and raises an army to fight the zombies, and once victorious embarks on a career in professional sports before meeting the love of his life and getting a articlegame of his exploits made and, completing the cycle, sacrifices himself to save SEGA in a massive fucking explosion. Why doesn’t this man have a movie?

  • That dude was waiting on top of the motherfucking Sega headquarters for a missile attack, leapt off the roof without hesitation, grabbed it just before it hit the window, redirected it with brute force, then rides into space shouting his catchphrase before it blows up. Hands down the most epic heroic sacrifice in a article game commercial.

  • So from this we’ve learned that Segata Sanshiro’s only weakness is zombies. Fun fact: Segata Sanshiro is based on the character Sugata Sanshiro, a judoka from an Akira Kurosawa movie that was based on a book. The author of that book based it on real judoka Saigo Shiro, the first guy in judo to ever be awarded a black belt.

  • Chuck Norris is afraid to die because he knows Segata Sanshiro will be waiting for him. Segata Sanshiro does not defy the laws of physics; the laws of physics simply know what happens to those who defy Segata Sanshiro. Segata Sanshiro has won The Game. Twice. Segata Sanshiro was actually bitten by those zombies. The zombies subsequently became living people. Segata Sanshiro will reappear at the end of time and judo throw the universe. It will be the most awesome thing ever.

  • I saw these ads on a youtube website for old article game ads and instantly fell in love. Some of the ads here are much shorter than the full length ones though- notably the soccer ones start out serious and fake you out into thinking it’s going to be a real ad until segata randomly shows up. But these are definitely high quality and with subtitles, which is amazing in it’s own right

  • I’m telling you, if we got the Segata Sanshiro commercials in the USA, I know a lot of people who would have bought one including myself. I didn’t get my Saturn till much later. But SEGA hardly promoted it at all let alone give it cool commercials. They didn’t learn their lesson either cause Dreamcast was barely promoted outside of magazines. But Segata Sanshiro will forever be in our hearts and minds.

  • Up until I saw the Nostalgia Critic’s 6th commercial special I never even knew about this man. I found him more dedicated to article game then me I had to see the commercials for myself. So dedicated he gave his life so we could continue to play the Saturn. I hardly knew you Segata Sanshiro but I love you. You will live on.

  • I adore these ads but Im still bewildered by them Some dude at Sega somehow convinced there entire marketing team to have the mascot of there console generation be martial artist who appears from FUCKING NOWHERE and harm any living creature that isnt in the presence of there console, until they know the truth. It obviously changed over time, but i assume that was the initial pitch.

  • I’ve always wondered what the joke was supposed to have been aside from just being a silly commercial mascot & I just now stumbled onto it by accident. I want to know if anyone else outside of Japan knew this– Segata Sanshiro is a spoof of two martial arts films from the 40s called Sanshiro Sugata & Sanshiro Sugata 2 that were made by Japan’s first master filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa (The Seven Samurai, etc). The plot involves a young man who moves to the city to become a student at a jujutsu dojo, but is rejected & ends up being taught by the instructor for a new type of martial art called Judo. Later, the city’s police end up creating a tournament to decide which kind of martial art they should teach in their academy & it ends up coming down to a battle between Jujutsu & Judo. Was based on a novel, too.

  • -When blocking the ball is mainstream, Segata Sanshiro moves the entire goal to assert dominance. -Segata Sanshiro does not fear to slip on the ice, because the ice has the fear of slipping on him. -When the zombies bit Segata Sanshiro, the zombies return to life and turn into Segata Sanshiro. -When Segata Sanshiro does a judo throw, he makes his foes explode *twice*. -Segata Sanshiro brings a huge Sega Saturn because it’s the only thing capable to sustain one of his fists without disintegrating into mere powder. -When Segata Sanshiro plays any fighting game on the sega saturn, he plays as himself. -Its not him who touches grass, it’s the grass that touches him in shock and disbelief. -Segata Sanshiro never died, the shooting star is just him re-entering the atmosphere of Japan to beat the shit out of the entirety of Nintendo.

  • As the Switches pathetically crawl across the world, Segata, in his lair in the deep forest, plays and waits. Soon, the stars will align, and Segata will come out of his retreat to take back his rightful place among us. At all shall recognise him! And all shall kneel and bow their heads in front of him …. to pick up a controller and play!

  • Note: Stuntman is not used in these commercials. Hiroshi Fujioka, who played Segata Sanshiro, actually burned her eyebrows. And he said, “Video recording on the skating rink was nearing the danger of frostbite.” The Sega Saturn model weighed 80 kilograms. Also, the lyrics say “Please play Sega Saturn with the momentum of breaking your finger,” and he bleeded from the little finger by a punch pushing the button.

  • I honestly think that Segata Sanshiro was the coolest Mascot for a article game system EVER! The man DIED to save SEGA, and he fought to save the world from being forced into playing crap systems like XBone, and the like. God bless Segata Sanshiro, you will be forevermissed our friend! :'( Sega Saturn Shiro!!!!!!!

  • Something interesting I learned a long time back about the Segata character is that apparently he was inspired by an old novel series (that also had some movies made based on the stories) about a masterful Judoka prodigy named Sugata Sanshiro who would face and defeat other fighters of various styles. (Judo, Jujutsu, Karate, etc.) This said series if I remember correctly was written in the early 1900s and the author was inspired to create the protagonist of his work by his father, who was also a masterful Judoka in his own right. I would love to read these stories if I can ever find them translated into English because in all honesty my basic Japanese still sucks lol

  • Evidences from Chuck Norris vs. Segata Sanshiro Death Battle did mention he’s immortal and alive if you look closer to the last moment after the missile exploded, a shooting star or he is entering the atmosphere, perhaps one day in the future we get to see him in his own game, but we got cameo appearances like Project x Zone 2 and many others

  • Me: “Time to go to a game room party!” Me when meeting the host: “Can I play on the Sega Saturn?” The host: “I’m sorry, but I sold it.” Segata Sanshiro: enters game room The host: “Segata Sanshiro! How are you still alive?” Segata Sanshiro: beats up the host and everyone else The host: “…Segata Sanshiro….” Segata Sanshiro: “You must play Sega Saturn!” holds one in his hand

  • Here because I read a DualShockers article stating Segata made an appearance in the recent Sega Fes 2019. Among the announcement was New Sakura Taisen. Which made @6:14 happily relevant and more hilarious, giving new and profound meaning to Segata’s words “Mataita ne – See you again” ! T_T (IT CAME TRUE – FOR BOTH HIM AND SAKURA TAISEN) THANK YOU SEGA

  • there is evidence to suggest that segata didn’t die in the final commercial #1 at 10:20 you can see a shooting star, which could be segata re entering earths atmosphere #2 one year after his “death” the game rent a hero was released, and you could be trained by a man who looks just like segata and he also claims that he was once a great hero too #3 in the year 2013 he made a surprise appearance at a sega concert of some kind, and sung his epic theme 🙂
