State employment leaders are helping over 200 people find jobs after an East Tennessee company, EXEDY America, announced it was closing its Mascot facility. The company is laying off 223 workers, all of them at their facility. Both Morell and Mack Walker agreed that there should be better law enforcement in Mascot, as they rarely see a sheriff’s cruiser there. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit consists of two OH-58 helicopters and one.
Mascot is located in northeastern Knox County, Tennessee, and is situated between U.S. Route 11W and the Holston River. The company has been observing more aircraft than usual flying in and out of Knoxville from the Air National Guard base at McGhee Tyson Airport. Army helicopters have raised a stir when they flew low over a Tennessee Titans football game in Nashville last month. A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and a sheriff’s office deputy died in a helicopter crash in Marion County, about 30 miles west of Chattanooga.
The goal of having a mascot is to help reinforce a positive image of law enforcement to younger children. The K-9 will also be available for use. The brigade will deploy with its AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters sometime before October 2016.
Local and national news for Knoxville and East Tennessee include Hurricane Helene approaching, heavy rains in the area, helicopters unable to fly, and police dogs being used with negative results.
