In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Gilderoy Lockhart is a character who struggles with magical abilities due to his lack of work ethic and natural talent. He is unable to perform even the simplest spells, and he is unable to subdue Cornish pixies. His magical skills have become rusty, and he focuses on his strengths such as deviousness, cunning, and initiative.
In Chapter Six, Lockhart takes remedies and spells from more advanced witches and wizards, claiming that they are his own. This leads to doubts about the effectiveness of a wand against its former owner. Before this, Harry suffers a broken arm during a game of Quidditch, and Gilderoy runs onto him.
Despite being above average in intelligence and magical ability during his formative years, Gilderoy Lockhart was lazy and ineffective. He wanted to be famous and try spells even though he made mistakes. The reason he couldn’t cast spells was that he had stolen his wand instead of winning it. His magical inability is almost identical to the one he once had, but he was not a bad wizard by any means.
The only spell for which he had real ability was the Memory Charm, which he had been using repeatedly for years. His classes quickly became a nonverbal spell, and Lockhart’s magical abilities were limited.
In conclusion, Gilderoy Lockhart’s magical abilities are largely ineffective due to his lack of knowledge and skill. He focuses on his strengths, such as deviousness and cunning, to avoid being perceived as a fraud. His struggles with magical abilities highlight the challenges faced by those who seek to improve their abilities.

📹 What Happened to Gilderoy Lockhart? – Harry Potter Explained
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, I’m going to be discussing none other than Gilderoy Lockhart- …
I think it would have been interesting if he actually recovered his memories, but the ‘from the outside’ perspective he gained while being an amnesiac, combined with a new outlook from spending so much time as a simple and innocent person while befuddled for so long, would have caused him to basically have an epiphany and change of heart and actually re-learn the magical skills he had forgotten so long ago, becoming a courageous protector of innocents and battler of Monsters and Villains to make up for his past crimes. If asked why he has changed, he could answer “to be a Hero like Harry Potter.” which I think would make a good full-circle moment.
Lockhart is actually one of my favorite Harry Potter characters. As I read the second book, his personality intrigued me. It was obvious his accomplishments were false, and I was looking forward to learning his backstory of why this is. I was a bit dissapointed that he was simply Obliviated and his character wasn’t explored much more. Despite this, I still enjoy his character a lot.
👍🏽 👊🏽 👏🏽 Great vid! Here’s a game for other viewers: The last digit is the Harry Potter professor you are most like: 1. Albus Dumbledore 2. Severus Snape 3. Minerva McGonagall 4. Gilderoy Lockhart 5. Professer Sprout (I don’t know her full name) 6. Horace Slughorn 7. Remus Lupin 8. Mad-eye Moody 9. Dolores Umbridge k. Your choice!
Hey, I am franch, and I started reading HP in English, for the moment i’m reading HP 2, so the fact that you make a article on Gilderoy comes right on time !! Discovered your vids 2 years ago, and you’re still improving !! I really love your Work, keep it that way, one day you’ll have the fame you deserve (starting in France, maybe ! =D )
The extra details about his background are really interesting! Many posters are commenting that if Lockhart had simply decided to write biographies of the amazing wizards who saved villages from werewolves, etc, instead of claiming their accomplishments for himself, Lockhart could have become a successful nonfiction writer. I never thought of that before.
i feel like his personality traits fit slytherin better. slytherins are ambitious, cunning, and clever in getting what they want. ppl say he was put in ravenclaw bc he was skillfull enough to find a way for him to be noticed with all the fame and etc, but tbh with all the shady stuff he’s done just to stand out and get his dreams fulfilled of ppl paying attention to him, he seems more slytherin-like to me
When Umbridge came around for her turn as DatDA teacher, I was actually longing for this guy, despite his cowardice, vanity, and delusions of grandeur. Hell, he would have left an innocent 11 year old girl to die to salvage his reputation, which was already in tatters thanks to his ineffectiveness at preventing the Basilisk from attacking the Muggle Born students. I bet not too many people think about that when counting the “sins against the Wizarding World” Lockhart has done. Kenneth Branagh made him iconic in the film version of Chamber of Secrets, and we didn’t get to see him again at St Mungo’s in the fifth one. It was a little scene in the context of things, but it would have been a helluva’ cameo to see Branagh in a lilac colored robe, signing autographs with a peacock feather quill, in St. Mungo’s.
Now I honestly think that information about this character (GILDEROY LOCKHART) & other characters like him should deserve to have more information revealed about them, and that includes the 21 characters that weren’t in the movies; So I suggest that either a cartoon show series of (HARRY POTTER) gets made, or a live-action show series of (HARRY POTTER) gets made that could reveal all the important missing details about each character from the books stories.
I thought of an idea for a character that started out like Gilderoy but becomes a hero. In the beginning, he would be a fame hungry egotist who cared nothing except for his fame. Then he met a fan who had a huge impact on their live and their dream to be an adventurer. This moment is what stuck with the character the most, as he knew he was famous, but not to the point where he had an impact on someone’s life. When the fan was in danger, he planned on escaping. But then, his body forced him to rescue the fan, even though he was terrified. He managed to defeat the monster, the first he he actually defeated, and was knocked unconscious. The rescue mission is what the character got him thinking on his life. He lived his life through lying, only to be thrusting into living lies. I imagined his character going through a struggle in which he has to admit he is a liar and accept the fact that he’s not perfect. The ending would possibly be him having his fame removed and him living a simple life.
When you really start to think about it, Dumbledore basically sold Harry twice, once to Lockhart and the second time to Slughorn. He effectively advertised Harry as a star attraction for both characters and managed to sell them on it. What does this say about Dumbledore you ask me? He’s a very good businessman!
the Top 6 Character that I hate in HP are : 1. Dolores Umbridge 2. Lord Voldemort 3. Bellatrix Lestrange 4. Peter Pettigrew 5. All the other Death Eaters 6. Gilderoy Lockhart – Order of Merlin Third Class, Honorary Member of the dark force defence League and Five Times winner of witch’s weekly most charming smile award
Wow… I almost feel bad for how his life turned out in the end… Cuz sure, previous Lockhart totally deserved it, but post Lockhart doesn’t… It shows his bare self without the results of his mother’s toxic praise, and he’s just a guy who wants to find a place in the world but can’t even get past his own door without losing his way… If he had just been brought up properly, he could’ve actually been positively amazing…
For such a brilliant head master his hiring of lockheart was pretty damn stupid. Just to prove a point and reveal him as a fake, he sacrificed an entire year worth of defense against the dark arts training and education. What kind of head master does that? Especially when the students training/education was already inconsistent at best :/
Of all the evil DADA teachers in the series, Gilderoy is the one with the most merciful way out. Because of his memory loss, Dumbledore kept his fraud secret as he believed Gilderoy was punished enough. If Gilderoy didn’t wipe out his memory, his fraud would have been exposed, he would have been sent to Azkaban to suffer the Dementors and, worse than anything else from his perspective, his reputation would have been destroyed. Now he can try to start over again once the hospital stops trying to get back his memory, but instead re-educates him. In fact, total/incurable Obliviate should have been used as a punishment instead of the Dementor’s kiss. Both destroy the criminal personality, but the first leaves a second chance to go to the right path.
I absolutely ADORE Lockhart, partly because of Kenneth Branagh’s incredible performance and mostly because (and this is kind of a long story so stick with me) when I was a kid I used to get letters from the tooth fairy. When I lost a tooth, I’d wake up in the morning to a short letter (written by my mum, of course, writing as the tooth fairy) which would, y’know, talk about various things, mostly congratulating me on my various recent accomplishments. However, when I got a little older, for some reason the job of writing this letter got shifted to my father, who I guess wasn’t a huge fan of writing as the tooth fairy and instead created an entirely new character, “Lord Molar,” the tooth fairy’s elderly uncle and also a British peer of the realm. Now, around this time I also read the Harry Potter books for the first time, and watched the films, which my dad also watched and he absolutely loved Lockhart. So the next time I got a letter from Lord Molar, it was revealed that he was Gilderoy Lockhart’s cousin. And because I was also getting into stage acting at that time, Lockhart became a West End actor. (I seem to remember he wrote and starred in a play called “Magical Me”, which is actually really in character.) So it was that whenever I lost a tooth, I would get a letter from Lord Molar, who would often talk about Lockhart and pass on little messages from him, mostly about my various plays I had been in. That’s why I love Lockhart.
I get that Lockhart had a thirst for knowledge, which would result in Ravenclaw. I’m surprised that the Sorting Hat didn’t recognize his underlying Slytherin qualities. The Sorting Hat recognized the underlying qualities of Hermione and put her in Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw. Maybe Lockhart was saying what Harry Potter kept saying, “Not Slytherin… Not Slytherin!” Then, he could really wreak havoc.
The bests students/professors from hogwarts houses Gryffindor – harry potter Hermione granger -Ron Weasley -Ginny Weasley -Molly Weasley -Arthur Weasley -Charlie Weasley -Bill Weasley -Fred & george weasley -Alice Fortescue/longbottom -Frank longbottom -Neville longbottom -James Potter -Sirius black -Remus lupin -Dumbledore -minerva McGonagall -Seamus Finnigan -Hagrid Hufflepuffs -pomona sprout -Nympadora tonks -cedric diggory -Ted tonks (tonks dad) Ravenclaw -luna lovegood Slytherins -Draco malfoy -severus Snape -Andromeda black/tonks -slughorn
It would have been so awesome if they could have filmed the St. Mungo’s Lockhart scene with Kenneth Branagh reprising his role as Lockhart! I understand that there would have been no time, as they had to strip the story line down to the bare bones to get it down to movie length. If only they had started splitting each book into two movies a bit sooner…
I don’t know if it’s ever stated that Dumbledore used Harry to persuade Lockhart to take the job. Dumbledore definitely did this with Slughorn. However, there’s no mention anywhere of Lockhart, knowing anything about Harry at Hogwarts, until they meet at his book signing. by the time the book signing happens Lockhart had already took the job, that’s why they have to buy 7 of his books!
So if lockhart was born 1964 when he started hogwarts the marauders and lily were in their 4th year and when he wrote his namenon the quidditch field does that mean the marauders saw it and james was mad cause he wants to do something like that? And when lochart had detention did he meet the marauders there?
Ya know if he was more of the protagonist he claimed to be in his 📚 I can imagine if he never lied about them and he actually befriended those other Wizards to helped them deafat all those Banshee’s Ghoul’s Troll’s Vampire’s Werewolves Only they all lost their lives to do it instead of a memory charm on them But Lockhart used them as the main protagonists in all his 📚 while he was telling the public of how he witnessed their heroic deeds And Harry Potter was the only one who didn’t die from the Baslisk Which would have been a 1st for his 📚 And yeah make him capable of most spells don’t make him useless for that reason
Lockhart was just a massive narcissistic jerk. Idk how people thought a person like him could’ve accomplished all of those achievements when he didn’t. Also, I don’t get how he was in Ravenclaw, the values of a Ravenclaw are: intelligence, learning, wisdom and wit. He wasn’t intelligent, he didn’t value learning and accomplishing things on his own since he stole all of “his” achievements from others who actually did those things, his “wisdom” came from the achievements he stole, and he doesn’t have wit either. He has zero Ravenclaw traits. I’m not a Ravenclaw myself (I’m a Slytherin) but I know he’s quite an embarrassment to Ravenclaw house. Also, his mother showing favoritism towards him because he was her only magical child, did not help either. If she didn’t show favoritism towards him and made him feel so special/unique, then he could’ve possibly not ended up the narcissistic thief he became.
I kinda feel bad for him. He was the way he was because he was overly idolized by his mother as a child. From a young age it was put in his head that he was the bees knees. Then for him to go to Hogwarts and be deemed an outcast, this must have really hurt him. To no longer be special, to not even be ordinary, but to also be less than ordinary, to be a dissatisfaction and to feel irrelevant as a pre teen must have made him feel an inner pain he never felt before. The only way he likely felt he could heal that pain was to find ways to force people to like him, and it ultimately took him down a dark path. I think the character of Gilderoy Lockhart is overall someone who longs to have purpose and matter. To be liked and to feel loved. Someone who’s greatest fear is being a nobody, and when that nightmare comes true, he just wants feel like he matters. When he does things like saying he knows a spell that could’ve saved ms norris, he’s not doing it because he’s an evil attention seeking person, he does it because it makes him feel like he has purpose. It makes him feel relevant. And in the end he ends up stuck in a mental hospital with a nurse who speaks to him the same way his mother did. Even though he doesn’t have his memory, he is for the first time in a long time happy, comfortable, no longer living the nightmare of feeling inadequate. In a strange way his character arc came full circle. (I know at the end he’s still technically a nobody but in his own mind at that point he’s free) His mother didn’t mean to cause any harm by showing how proud she was of him, but in doing so she sadly did.
I’ve been here since the launch and announcement of this website, and I just want to express how happy i am that we have a website for Potterheads that we can come to for quality content. Another plus, for me personally, is how Star Wars Theory is a co-creator for the website. As a kid, i was always surrounded by the thought of “You either like Harry Potter and you’re a hot topic kid, or you like Star Wars and you’re a huge nerd” The fact that these two websites are semi-connected makes me feel so welcome into both communities and just validates my care and love for these two universes. So thank you for making this website, I’m very happy to be here!
We learn that Gilderoy had reclaimed some of his memories–but is that enough to be let out of the wizarding equivalent of a skilled nursing home? No. Because we never learn how capable he was in those mundane things one never reads about. Self care, cleaning, cooking, not getting lost on his way to and from the store. Yes, he might be able to sign his name, realize he is famous, and carry on a conversation about himself; but no, I don’t think he will ever be able to leave some sort of skilled nursing home. In the Muggle World, he would probably be diagnosed with some sort of dementia. Out in the real world he might violate (unknowingly) the Statute of Secrecy. Not that the Muggles would believe him, but would place him in a Muggle asylum. He’s better off in a wizarding hospital.
Back in the 80s I read a series of books called The Death Gate Cycles where magic was cast by tracing runes that were tattooed on the caster —there was reference to them being prisoners and this magic kept the user mentally sane by being able to let the spirit escape while being held captive in a prison— This made me think of Sirius Blacks tattoos that look like runes he has covering his body — is there any explanation how he used his tattoos while in Azkaban? I would be very interested in knowing if he used a similar magic to mentally escape —kinda like astral projection
You know I love Gilderoy Lockhart . He is up there on my favorite character list. I like to think when he grew old he was Released from the hospital and now lives in a quiet beach house in California. Still not knowing his past or how to do magic. Just a peaceful life signing autographs on the beach.
question for you all, can Dumbledore see into the school year ahead? excluding Quirrel, because Voldemort was his fault, he exposed Lockhart, knowing that a dangerous situation would reveal him, but given nothing usually happens in a school year, how can he be exposed, the only way is for Dumbledore to know the basilisk would be released, he hired Lupin who, conveniently, taught harry the Patronus charm against the dementors, AND he hired Moody to protect Harry Knowing he would be in danger in his fourth year, BUT the only way he would be in danger was if he was IN the tri-wizard tournament. the only way for these people to “help” Harry, is for Dumbledore TO KNOW what the school year is going to be like, or am i over-thinking it?
What would have happened it the years were in different orders? Sirius escaping in harry’s first year? Quirrell trying to get the stone in the 2nd? The D.A. in 3rd? Chamber in 4th? The vanishing cabinet in the 5th year? The triwizard tournament in 6th? Or any other random order. Would Harry still have his support and skills to succeed? Would they be different?
Hello everyone. While we’re on the topic “Gilderoy Lockhart” i would like to pose a question, but first i would like to give you some background. Even as a child, Lockhart, was arrogant and ambitious. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, he was sorted into Ravenclaw house although he almost got Slytherin. So here is my question: Why did this happen ? Why was he a Ravenclaw when his personality clearly matched that of Slytherin ? The only reason he wanted good grades while in school was to get more praise and admiration.
“And this was one of the most dangerous school years” Even though a basilisk has only ever killed one person and paralysed like 10 only muggle-borns. Ignoring the fact that Voldemort was in Harry’s first year (and a mass murderer), Still a mass murderer in Harry’s third year and a supposed mass murderer, A death eater and Voldemort was reborn in the fourth year, idk what bad happened in fifth year Dumbledoor, the only person who Voldemort was afraid of, died AND A LITERAL WAR IN THE SEVENTH YEAR HOW IS THE SECOND YEAR ON OF THE MOST DANGEROUS
The old Lockhart would’ve let an innocent girl die at the hands of Lord Voldemort and flee to save his own skin the moment he realized he let Voldemort come back to power then if that’s what happened. One would think a memory erased Lockhart would’ve read about what was going on and seen the old books, then wanted to help in the final battle at Hogwarts I would think. But he was safely away at St. Mungo’s. So we may never know the kind of good hero type he could’ve been sadly.
How can we be certain that he fully lost his memory? I think after some time at the St. Mungos he remembered who he is and what happened, and although Dumbledore died, Harry, Ron and Hermione know what a frauds he is so he would rather stay in the hospital were it us comfortable and suffer no humiliation of the truth to be set free. That is “my theory ” on Gildory Lovkheat.
I’m beginning to see why Dumbledore thought it wise for Harry to be raised outside the wizarding world with Muggles. With the likes of Gilderoy Lockhart and Draco Malfoy (especially at Hogwarts), they wouldn’t have been able to deal with them plus an arrogant Harry Potter, too. He’d seen the downfall that came with a swollen pride and wanted to prevent that with Harry. He also needed Harry to be completely malleable in order to fulfill grandiose his plan in taking down Voldemort.
My favourite part is when Lockheart sends Hermione a get well soon card and signs it with all of his accolades… “To Miss Granger, wishing you a speedy recovery, from your concerned teacher, Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, Order of Merlin, Third Class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defence League, and five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award.” Hahahaha
My guess is, the Ministry of Magic agree to snap his wand and during his recovery there told him he was an author and after he recovered he was cast off into the world; but the muggle world where they brought him to his parents and Lockhart lived the rest of his days thinking he was a muggle and he managed to be successful as an author. His mother was heartbroken as she was ordered not to mention the magical world with him because of the dangers he would bring if he were to find out.
If I was the parent of a magical child and found out that the headmaster of my child’s school had knowingly and deliberately hired an incompetent and potentially-dangerous teacher simply out of a personal desire to “expose” them, I’d be kinda pissed. Dumbledore can expose charlatans on his own time, when it’s not negatively impacting the education of students for an entire school year.
Kinda wondering now. If Voldemort had won the war, would he have kept St Mungo’s open to treat patients (and by that i mean use them as lab rats) or would he just shut it down since there would be no point for him to care for the sick (mostly people like lockhart who was useless to him due to his condition and little chance of recovery) or maybe keep it open to at the very least keep an image that cares for his fellow wizards? Although i don’t see this last option as something he would do. Or would he just keep open those departements with patients capable of recovery and thus with some possible use to him to incorporate in his army
I’d like to think he regained some of his memories perhaps not all but some. But not enough for him to leave the relative safety of the ward. If he got out Lockhart would’ve been a risk to himself and others and would need round the clock care(does social services exist). He’s better off staying in the hospital
Correct me if I’m wrong: Hermione erased her parents’ memory, yet she was able to retrieve it after the great war. Why they could not be able to retrieve Lockhart’s memory? Is it just because “Obliviate” backfired at him, so he practically erased his own memory, therefore there was no one who could retrieve his own memory? Is erasing your own memory undoable, yet you can retrieve it if you erased someone else’s?
Gilderoy Lockhart probably never came out of Saint Mungo‘s. I know Dumbledore decided never to expose him for being the fraud he was, thinking that his memory erasure was probably just punishment, but I feel sad for those wizards who were never vindicated. Unfortunately, I have known people like Lockhart. And they never can get enough attention. They can also get a lot of other people into trouble. J. K. Rowling did a great job with this character. I have a feeling she knows someone just like him in real life.
I agree with Rowling, that he never recovered. I want it to stay that way. The way he was when we met him, he was just as cruel, vain, and narcissistic as Donald John Trump, Sr., and I can’t stand both of them. Also to shift to the subject of S.P.E.W., Rowling said in online chat room that it took the house-elves some time to get used to it, but after Kreacher introduced Hermione to a house elf who greatly needed help, and Hermione successfully did, S.P.E.W. took off and improved working, wages, and living conditions for house-elves.
where is the theory? you just talk about what was outright and blatantly shown in the movie, and then stop. we that read the books or saw the movie already know everything you talked about. you dont mention anything beyond what was shown nor do you even attempt at making a theory about what happened to him after. also, this is not the only time you do this, most of your articles i have watched also are click bait, example: the one about the history of the tri wizard cup from the last year and why it was the last. you talk mostly about what we saw in the movie, and make only a couple lines of reference to the one the title is about. would love if you would cite your sources so we that actually want to know can just go research it ourselves after you fail to give the answers. as a huge fan i have never seen any references to that tri wizard cup at all, so where did you get the information about it being a cockatrice? also that is the only thing you even said about it was a cockatrice got loose. then go one to talk about harry and the tournament from the book and movie again. so after perusal around a hundred of your articles i have came to the conclusion that you make click bait titles and only really talk about the tings that are blatantly obvious from the movies and books, and hardly ever delve into real theories or speculation based on the information given, nor do you share the sources of said information most of the time. bring back the theory part of the show, stop just talking about the things we all saw in the movies and talk about the stuff we didnt get to see.
