Why Do Bards Not Get Spells With Every Level?

Bards in DnD 5e have 22 spells, but they can plunder 2 more from any class at 10, 14, and 18. They gain one spell known each level and can retrain one spell each level. They also get 4 extra spells with magical secrets, allowing them to get any spell in the game. In 3.5e, bards could only learn up to 6th level spells, but in 5e, they were treated as a Sorcerer, the only full arcane caster with spontaneous casting. Instead of preparing spells, bards simply have spells known and can expend spell slots to cast one of their known spells.

Bards can fill nearly any role within a party due to their open skill options, Expertise, and buff spells. Their spellcasting makes them effective Controllers and Support casters. They cannot switch their spells out on long rest like druids, clerics, half casters, and wizards. Bards don’t learn 1 spell per level up for every level, but at some levels it jumps (they get 2 spells at 10th, 14th, and 18th, their Magical Secret).

As a 5th level bard, they should “know” 8 spells plus 3 cantrips, but they have 4 1st level spell slots, 3 2nd level spell slots, and 2 3rd level spell slots. Bards don’t have a school of magic, but they are not intended to get all of the spells that wizards/sorcerers can get. At 6th level, they learn two spells of their choice from any class, and an additional bard spell of your choice is learned at each level except 12th, 16th, 19th, and 20th.
