Why Was Shaq Traded By The Magic?

Shaquille O’Neal, a former Orlando Magic player, left the Orlando Magic in 1996 after being treated poorly by the Magic. The Magic withheld available salary to sign Penny Hardaway, and O’Neal decided to end the process and sign with the Lakers. In 2004, the Lakers traded O’Neal to the Miami Heat for Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Brian Grant, and a future first-round pick.

The Lakers won the highest-stakes bidding war in American sports history, signing O’Neal away from the Orlando Magic on Thursday, giving him a $120 contract. However, the reactions of people inside the Orlando Magic offices were not as positive as those outside the organization. It has been over 25 years since O’Neal left the Orlando Magic in free agency and traded Disney World for Disneyland with the Lakers.

Brian Schmitz, a former Orlando Sentinel sports columnist who covered the team during the Shaq era, believes that the Magic are making a big mistake by retiring O’Neal’s rights. O’Neal’s 1996 free agency was for the Orlando Magic to lose, as they had Shaq’s Bird rights, meaning they could have exceeded the $24.3 million salary cap to re-sign. The Magic offered $13.5 million per year with no opt-out, while Shaq wanted closer to $20 million per year with an opt-out after year three.

O’Neal left the Orlando Magic in 1996 because the franchise paid more money to Penny Hardaway and claimed it was Penny’s team. He also learned that Hardaway considered himself the leader of the Magic and did not want O’Neal making more money than him. O’Neal demanded a trade, and the Magic lowballed him during ’96 free agency because they thought Penny Hardaway was their future.

  • It was the management and coaching staff of the Magic organization more than anything else that led to the demise of that team. Shaq is my favorite player ever, and the 1995 Magic is still my all-time favorite team, always will be. I’ve been saying “what if” for 24 years now, what if Nick Anderson had simply hit one of those free throws in game 1 of the Finals against the Rockets, what if the Magic had matched the Lakers’ offer for Shaq, what if Penny had never gotten hurt but we’ll never know. They were the only team to ever defeat the Chicago Bulls in the 90s during that dynasty, but were swept by them the next season. Jordan stopped an entire generation of hall of famers from winning a ring (Barkley, Stockton & Malone, Kemp) so getting through Jordan to even get back to the finals after 1996 likely wouldn’t have happened lets be honest. Shaq was a championship chaser, ego factored a lot into that decision as well and his relationship with Penny too, just as it did with Kobe when Shaq’s tenure with the Lakers ran its course in 2004. I still believe had he worked harder, kept in shape and took the game more seriously the Lakers would have won six or seven instead of three. Orlando at that time was special, a very fun team to watch but in the end poor leadership and ego got in the way.

  • Magic would have had a dynasty, but he left for the money. Orlando was stupid putting their star on the back burner trying to get him cheaper, Lakers came in gave him exactly what he wanted and he signed. By the time Orlando GM woke up he was signed. Penny didn’t even know until a press conference. It was the money and disrespect by the GM of the Magic.

  • If the Magic Mgmt wasn’t so inexperienced, if Shaq never went to the Lakers, and if Penny never got hurt. However,I wont count the Nick Anderson 4 missed free throws because that happens that was just inexperience vs the experience of the Houston Rockets. One thing for sure the Orlando Magic definitely would have dominated or at least have a championship or two by the late 90s into the early 00s. Basically, the way the Pistons beat the Celtics and the Bulls did to the Pistons eventually. I feel the Magic would have done that to the Bulls by 97 or 98 and they would have been the new dynasty. I’m a Knicks fan but I know the Knicks and Pacers players because of them having players of the same age as many of the Bulls players wouldnt have beaten the Bulls. The Magic on the other hand would because they were younger and hungrier. The sad thing is the Orlando Magic will always be that what if team. Detroit and Chicago at least have a moment in history where there teams were on top of the World. Too bad Orlando never experienced that.

  • Why’d you name me Shaquille O’Neal? Well you see that’s how last names kinda work and for the first part I just needed something that rhymed and sounded good so bam here you are. Plus after naming your sister shattoniqualatronda, I said sheesh some these black names are no joke, my next kids name is just gon roll off the tongue.

  • So, everyone’s on Orlando for a mistake. They offered a 80.million 4 year contract. 20 million per year. It’s not 115 million but ts also not 7 years. Hed be renegotiating in a few years. Yes, I know you might get injured, but you also could be signing for 125 for 4 years, just 3 years later. Shaq was too emotional and was taking it personal. The team is the coach, the players, and the fans. And the coach will change. The management is the boss that no one likes. All the championships aside, he had it made in Orlando. That team would have become better, they would have built a stronger team. And I’m sure he would have made way more money playing on one team.
