It was the management and coaching staff of the Magic organization more than anything else that led to the demise of that team. Shaq is my favorite player ever, and the 1995 Magic is still my all-time favorite team, always will be. I’ve been saying “what if” for 24 years now, what if Nick Anderson had simply hit one of those free throws in game 1 of the Finals against the Rockets, what if the Magic had matched the Lakers’ offer for Shaq, what if Penny had never gotten hurt but we’ll never know. They were the only team to ever defeat the Chicago Bulls in the 90s during that dynasty, but were swept by them the next season. Jordan stopped an entire generation of hall of famers from winning a ring (Barkley, Stockton & Malone, Kemp) so getting through Jordan to even get back to the finals after 1996 likely wouldn’t have happened lets be honest. Shaq was a championship chaser, ego factored a lot into that decision as well and his relationship with Penny too, just as it did with Kobe when Shaq’s tenure with the Lakers ran its course in 2004.
