MJP does not need a thin client at all. You simply hook it to the computer like your original MJ to register it. After that you can disconnect it forever and use the power adapter and network connection only. I have never connected it back to my computer after setting it up for the first time. Good Luck.
Great article, Dan! I also just upgraded from the old style MJ, to the MJ Plus, with the extended, 5 year plan. I am running it without a computer, with no troubles, to a Uniden cordless phone similar to yours. I have a broadband cable, 12 MB speed connection, which really helps out, for call clarity. So, for a one-time charge of roughly $150.00, I have 5 years of flawless sounding unlimited local and long distance calls to anywhere in the US or Canada! Saving hundreds of dollars, yearly!
Sounds right… but the MJP could plug into the wireless router which usually has hardwire ports on the back eliminating the need to get a multiport modem. Install like this… cable modem to the wireless to the MJP to the phone. A computer would be needed to initially setup the MJP… but you could use someone else’s then uninstall the software from their computer.
@AmericaUnitedWeStand While you setup you new MJP be on the lookout for the step that asks if you want to use your previous account or set up a new account/number. That will be the option you want. Then if you want to port your old number over to MJP you can… but MJ charges for the process. Be mindful that ATT will most likely cancel all your services upon getting the transfer/port order from MJ. So you might want to call them first… without the DSL, no MJP.
Yes you need to have a computer to setup the MJP. It can be someone elses computer that would let you install the MJ software temporarily. After that you just need a high speed internet connection with a ethernet cable connection. MJP is more of a “I already have a computer and high speed internet connection” thing; than a “I don’t have a computer or internet” thing.
The idea is that you don’t need to leave the computer on. So… your internet modem and router (sometimes both are in one unit) needs to be on. Formally, you had to leave your computer on all the time to allow MJ to work… now you don’t need the computer to be left on. After you set it up, you don’t even need the computer at all.
I’m a late comer to this article. I bought the 2022 MagicJack off of Amazon yesterday. I was a bit disappointed that I had to have a Windoze machine to activate it. I use linux everywhere. So got it configured using a Windoze VM and was able to complete the activation per your instructions, then connected it to my router.and it WORKED!! I don’t know but I guess I over thought this. Being an engineer would do that. LOL Thanks for putting this on! Cheers.
Thanks for the article. My magic jack works great now where as before I just couldn’t get it to work without my computer. For those saying you have no service there are two Ethernet cables needed. The original going from router to wall and the second one going from router to phone. It took me a minute but mine is working great now. Best of luck!!!
Yes, as far as I know you will need to hard wire the MJP to the internet. One option you may consider is a wireless repeater. Some repeaters like the Netgear Universal WN3000RP Wi-Fi Range Extender have a hard wired port and can act as a bridge. A second benefit is that your existing wireless signal will be extended in that area. Good Luck!
Sorry to hear that… I still haven’t had any problems other than a few bad connections that I can easily forgive; given the low price. I use a cable internet connection with plenty of bandwidth. Some providers may be throttling the connection to cause problems for VOIP telephone connections. They would rather you pay them for phone service. Try using your MJP at a friend’s house with different internet… or at work to see if you get different results. Good Luck.
@thenodsstrip A router is an “ethernet splitter.” You can get a wireless one, which will have additional ports on the back; or a nonwireless router which will have additional ports on the back. The router plugs into the one port of the modem, and the computer and MJP plugs into the open ports on the routher. A second modem is not needed and would most probably lead to additional fees from your ISP. After initial setup on the computer, the MJP doesn’t need a computer.
I’m not too sure if this was answered but I connected it to my uncle’s house and tried something crazy. I connected a 2 port splitter to the phone jack nearest to where the MJ was installed. I ran one wire from the wall to the magic jack plus and a nother wire from the wall to a phone. That allowed every port in the house to work as normal. If you don’t understand reply or message me.
Yep… only received one call from a loser in Florida that thought he was actually calling MagicJack. It takes all kinds. If you think your number or location is private… think again. Your post to YouTube was logged, saved and traceable. But I do appreciate the concern. I live a good life and have nothing to hide… that being said… I have a long driveway on a dead end street that is heavily defended! lol
The idea is that a computer doesn’t have to be on all the time. The original MJ required a computer to be running. MJP only requires the setup to be done on the computer. Then you can plug the Ethernet cable into the router and turn the computer off. Or if your cable modem is a router your can plug it in there. I have never accessed the MJP unit or it’s interface since the day I made this article… still working wonderfully.
Free long distance to US, Canada, P.Rico and US Virgin Islands. Free international calls back to US and Canada, if you take it with you to another country. (You could register one here and ship it to your family.) BUT… other international calls from the US are billed at competive “prepaid” rates. I think they are listed in one of the FAQs on the website… look for the FAQ link at the bottom then search for “International Rates.” Good Luck!
@jackiejunque She could order the MJP, use your computer (or any other one that has an internet connection) to register the device with magicjack. After that she could use the MJP anywhere there is a power outlet and a cat5 network internet connection (like on the back of a modem or router.) That being said… if she doesn’t have a computer; she probably doesn’t have a highspeed internet connection either. Right?
The name doesn’t matter. Buy the cheapest one. If you desire to have wireless in your house, then get a wireless one. It will have four extra ethernet ports on the back. One for your computer, one for your MJP and two left over. If you have no desire for wireless internet, then just get the cheapest “wired” router it should also have 4 ports. But keep in mind most modern cellphones can connect to a wireless router for faster internet. There are several wireless routers at Walmart under $30.
While I am not a routing expert… I would have to believe that the MJP does in fact receive an IP number from the DHCP. I haven’t opened that MJP software in over a year… haven’t had to; it’s not even installed on my current system. Still, I don’t recall any settings that allow one to set a static IP address.
I have service through a Cable company. It’s their cheapest plan at 29.99 a month for 12Mbps that actually tests at 20 Mbps. After trying all types of internet services since the 1980’s; I would never use anything but a cable internet connection (maybe I would try that Google Fiber Internet in Kansas.)
@JohnQPublic11 Yes it seems like you will lose you prepaid time. Upon upgrading mine, there was a message that they could not honor the old account’s time. LOL I realized they are getting over on me… but for $20 a year… I figured it was worth it. I only lost 7 months and went ahead and got the 5 year plan this time. I did keep my original MJ number.
@JT8800 MJ is a landline service… not a cellular wireless service. For $1000/yr, you may be confusing the two. I know people that have ported their number to MJ but it is not always an easy process. Caller ID works, but Call Waiting ID does not for us. MJ has their own voicemail service, but we mostly use our own answering machine.
Thanks for the great article Daniel. However, I have a question: I just purchased MagicJack 2014 which I am planning to send overseas to my family. But I am not sure if I need/can do the initial setup here (in US) and just send the device there, so they just plug it into the wall and router, or they would need to do the setup over there. Would you happen to know what would be the right option?
Daniel, I am cutting down on my expenses and shopping around. I am gettig the magic Jack PLUS for my phone and faxes. I am in californina what internet service do you use? I want to get some thing fast but not so expensive. I know a lot of the providers out there have bundles only and I don’t need them what do you suggest?
hello daniel know buy a magic jack plus and my question is if I can assign the same number from my magic jack to magic jack plus standard? and then if it transferred the same number would have to pay for another year to continue with the same number and free year is added to the same number? my question is this about to expire because my magic jack number of standard
Hi I’m from the Philippines and planning of buying MJP. my husband is currently working in disney cruises. I was wondering if What can you suggest. He was planning on getting an AT&T phone or buying MJP. We are not yet sure if VoIP is currently blocked on the vessel since he just sailed 2 days ago. Hope to get Helps and Tips for newbies like me since this is my first time. Thanks Hope to get a Reply.
I’ve tried using magic jack plus and all the steps work until the part where I wanted my current phone number so I had to put in my credit card information but it isn’t accepting it, all of the information is correct. I don’t know why it’s not letting my payment go through. Would you know what’s wrong?
Good article, thanks. I also have had both. I just set my Plus up yesterday after not being in use for over a year. I like that it will show the number of the person calling, although if someone’s cell phone doesn’t register it will show up as “anonymous”. Once someone’s # shows up in the list you can edit it and add them to the contact list. You can also switch to using a headset if you don’t have a phone to connect to it. You can either use the phone to dial your # or use the keypad on the computer, then pick up the phone after dialing. It also has voicemail services and you can have the msg sent to your email. It will show the # of the person who called, with the message attached. I actually received an email with voicemail attached from someone who’s # I lost, long after the service had run out (I moved and didn’t have the mj with me). So, I was thankful my number hadn’t been given away and could call the person back.
I’ve heard many things, but the only problem I’ve had was that they renewed my old MJ again. But when I contacted them on the chat… they resolved the matter and cancelled the order in just a few minutes. I purchased the MJPlus with the 5 years and was billed as expected. There are additional fees for porting a number if you choose, but they are reasonable considering the prices of regular phone service.
Hi Daniel, no complaints I really like your article. Just one comment; at 6:53 you click on the blue box which says: “Click here to close this window and begin using magicJack PLUS from your computer” Perhaps you should have clicked on the Green box which says: “Click here and remove your magicJack PLUS to begin using your magicJack PLUS in standalone mode plugged directly into your switch or router.” Cheers! Great article!
I never tried faxing with the original magicjack, and heard from others that it didn’t work. But I have faxed with the MJ Plus at least once with no problems. I just plug the copy/fax machine into the phone plug of the MJP and fax as usual. (I haven’t yet recieved a fax, but I can’t imagine it would not work just as well.)
I use Charter Internet. It’s a cable TV based service costing me $30 a month for 12mbps (but it tests out at over 20 mbps.) That being said, MJP worked fine for me when I was using 3mbps too. The whole reason I switched to Magic Jack in the first place was that I wanted out of the bundle. I now pay $90 for cable TV and internet with no phone bundled in. Wish I could drop the TV too!!! lol
I used a cordless phone with 5 handsets plugged into the MJP. I would imagine it is possible to run it to your home’s wiring after disconnecting from the external hookup, but I’m not sure MJP produces enough voltage to run older wall type phones. You might try a longer phone service cord, instead of a longer ethernet cable. Good Luck.
@candylac My mother-in-law just did the same thing… assuming you are talking about a “land” line. She bought the magicjack plus with the five year service and now has everthing setup. She did run into a problem when ATT cancelled her phone and internet service as she was switching over. So make sure you plan it out before hand. It was really dirty how they would not grant her access to her ATT email account until she signed on for a two year internet agreement!
To Colonel 11947 Thanks for information on the call charges. The last call I made from my MJ+ I received a message saying that I needed a prepaid card or minutes (which I have never heard of). I was calling a toll free number. That was a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t been able to make a call since. I get error 1 message which is “check internet connection”. Connection is same as when installed and obviously I am using the internet. Disappointed because I expected reliability and low cost service.
I’ve found that the caller ID only reflects the phone number, so I would just register as an individual. I think the days of charging a premium for commercial lines are almost behind us… especially for businesses with no physical location for a land line. I would test a MJP at the Ethernet to make sure the network allows the connection… but I’m sure you already did that.
I know you said once you program it you can use without the Internet so why is hooked up to the internet??? It’s misleading and confusing not on your article but from magic jack. I’m a past magic jack customer and wanted to try the….Magic Jack Plus. …..Idk Now..What’s the point if I need the ethernet…cord?????
Honestly it is quite good. This is a good question, since it seems like I have more phone issues now that when we started this escapade. But I really feel it is due to the increase in cell phone usage. Almost no one we talk to now has a landline anymore. So I’m assuming the few dropped calls and bad connections are due to the other user’s service. Any inconvenience, and I notice very little; is totally put off by the price of the service. I spend more at Taco Bell!
When you setup the MJP, one of the step by step options will present you with “porting your old number.” Be mindful that upon doing so; your current phone provider will usually immediately terminate your services. I’ve even heard of them terminating the internet too… if they happen to be your ISP! Thereby, frustrating the user. Good Luck! PS… I think there is an annual fee to port a number… like $30/year. I didn’t port mine.
I don’t understand why people have to be so nasty. No one is forcing you to watch this article that was so generously made available. If you don’t like this one there are several others that you can avail yourself of. There is no need for the nastiness and vulgarity. Is this what we’ve come to? Thanks Daniel. I was able to follow your article step by step with a screen split between your article and the MJ screens.
@JT8800 My motherinlaw has changed over and had great success. The only glitch was that ATT cancelled her phone and internet immediately upon getting the change notification from MJ. Took two weeks to straighten it all out, so make sure you are ready for Verizon to shut you down. The hidden charges for her included a $25 transfer fee and $10 yearly fee to keep her number. So her startup cost was $100 and yearly comes to $30. Still not too bad!!!
I have a MJ hooked to my PC(2 years now), I got an email from MJ a few months ago for the MJ PLUS at half price, ordered it, got it, But, I want to Keep my old MJ hooked up to my PC, AND set up the MJ Plus as the houshold landline replacement and Dump AT&T but I have AT&T DSL service. How do I set that up? PC MJ is MY line. The MJ Plus would be the whole house phone so when my PC was off everyone could just use the MJ Plus. Gotta Keep the DSL. I also want the MJ Plus to Keep our landline # ?
Hello, I have a question for anyone can answer me using Magic Jack plus, my mother has a magicjack plus at her vacation home in the island and when she comes back home to the USA can she hookup another magicjack plus to her modum in the usa instead of taken off the one she has at her vacation home in the island ?
WARNING- After two years on MJ Plus. I am now without being able to call out because they have now switched me to a prepaid by the minute calls only! They claim it is because certain calls cost them to connect me with others. I was fine for two years & now can’t make calls even to MJ customers I referred them too!!. Suddenly every number I call gets a voice message telling I have to first have to buy prepaid minutes to complete the call.
UNLIKE WHAT majicjack claims, it is simply a constant headache once yo install it on your computer. No matter how fast your internet is, I am in NYC, it never works properly. I have returned my MagicJack because every other time I tried to use it I had to reboot the software. Plus, the customer servcie is bad. There is no telephone number on their website to reach them.
been using mjp for over a year now absolutely NO problems ! I am a service tech in the wind power business and there is no cell service out in the woods where these turbines are located. There is fiber optic that links all the turbines together and ethernet in each turbine. Can I use mjp for a business application? are there any higher/hidden charges? Should I just register to myself and save the grief? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated !
I just connected my MJ plus without the computer and the phone is working. I have used the regular MJ for 3 years now. Problem is I no longer have all my contacts on my computer screen from the MJ dial picture. I really liked having the MJ dial screen on my computer. Is there any way to still use the computer MJ screen and have the MJ Plus not connected to the computer? Or do I now have to go out an by a phone that I must now put all my contacts into? Thanks…Karen
@makYOUsuffer I’m not sure you could set it up without a computer… but you could just stick it into someone else computer just to set it up… takes like 5 minutes then uninstall the MJ software on their computer…. after that it would work anywhere with a cabled access port (cat 5) and an electrical outlet.
The price usually covers the first year… they try to upsell you for 5 years… which I did. Then plug it in, answer the questions and that’s it. The install is just an account manager/voicemail app. I haven’t used the app since the install. I check messages by calling my own number. There are additional fees to keep your old number. No montly fees though. (You do need HSpeed internet and a network cable port/router.)
I cann’t register magic, every time try ti register I got this error message: magicJack was unable to contact our registration server. Please check your internet connection. If you can browse other web pages, it means our server is temporarily down. Please restart the phone again in a few minutes if it is not ready to call. We apologize for any inconvenience.
MJ+ needs to plug into an internet modem or router. The problem is that this way MJ does not log international calls. So you cannot find out how much you spent on a call.I lost $20 on 1 call this way somehow for a 10 minute call to the UK.The MJ+ has to plugged into a computer USB to have the calls logged (so they say) . If you have 2 MJ phones on one account all internationals charge are on the 1st mj phone #, if you add international $ to the 2nd phone # you will never be able to use that $.
I had the old magic jack and upgraded to this one. To be honest, I liked the old one better. It was smaller and looked better. The only benefit to this one is the ability to use it without being connected to a computer. However, when you do this the unit heats up BIG TIME. I would never leave this plugged into the wall for long periods of time. That said, if my computers ever break down at the same time then I guess I will be able to make a maintenance call still.
