A Conspiracy of Faith is a novel by Jussi Adler-Olsen, set in Denmark and starring Detective Carl Morck and his assistant Assad. The story revolves around a series of child abductions from religious communities throughout Denmark, which have not been reported for some reason and some of them are suspected to have ended in murder. Inspector Carl Mørck and his colleagues at Copenhagen’s Department Q investigate the case after a message written in blood by two children is found 14 years after they were kidnapped.
The majority of these abductions have not been reported, and some of them are believed to have ended in murder. Detectives Carl and Assad investigate the case, finding that there have only been two such cases over the past decade. As they uncover fundamentalist families with missing children, they realize that a serial killer may be at work.
The movie starts as a kidnapping drama but then turns into a serial killer thriller. The story revolves around the kidnapping of a high-ranking government official, a brutal prep school murder, and a bloody message from two presumed dead children. The mysterious message in a bottle reveals the truth about religious fanatics kidnapping children and the reasons why parents don’t report the incidents. When a message washes ashore pointing to kidnapped children, Detective Mørck and Assad begin the hunt for the captor among a religious cult.
A Conspiracy of Faith is bleak in its kidnapping contents but bright in its images. The novel features a subversive touch that has the desired impact, as Poul Holt, who was abducted, scrawls a plea for help in his own blood and deposits it in a bottle. The killer targets families belonging to religious sects, kidnapping two children and demanding ransom for their return.
