Jamaica’s government has never outlawed the hallucinogenic fungus psilocybin, which contains the psychoactive compound psilocybin. The country is now cultivating investors to build up its psychedelics industry, which could be worth $8 billion globally by 2028. The Jamaica Psilocybin Industry Working Group (JPWG) was established through the Bureau of Standards of Jamaica (BSJ) and the Ministry of Industry through the Jamaica Psilocybin Industry Working Group (JPWG).
The growing, selling, and use of “magic mushrooms” in Jamaica are unregulated, with no regulations governing their ultilisation. This free-for-all industry has led to proponents arguing that the industry has been “mushrooming” without checks and balances. A new group of Jamaican resorts is promoting tourism that offers mystical experiences and stress relief through “magic mushrooms”.
Psychedelics include psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ayahuasca, peyote, and other substances. The legal status of unauthorised actions with psilocybin mushrooms varies worldwide, but they are listed as Schedule I drugs under the United States Drug Control Act. In Jamaica, a growing number of luxury retreats offer psilocybin-assisted therapy, most of which are foreign-owned.
The Kaya Group, the first medicinal Ganja herb house in the Caribbean and holistic wellness center, is offering psychedelic drugs like psilocybin mushrooms as a mind-altering remedy for various ailments. The Jamaican government has not explicitly declared cultivation of psilocybin illegal, unlike other nations.
