Mystic Aquarium, a nonprofit organization in Mystic, Connecticut, is home to over 300 species of marine mammals, fish, birds, invertebrates, and reptiles. The aquarium offers interactive and educational exhibits, including touch tanks, and is fully wheelchair accessible. It is also a certified KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Venue.
The aquarium provides an array of up-close experiences, including encounter programs with seals, sea lions, penguins, and sting rays. Reservations must be made ahead of time and can be found on the aquarium’s website. The aquarium is one of only two U.S. facilities holding Steller sea lions and has the only beluga whales in New England.
Guests can experience a wide range of exciting guest experiences, such as meeting a green sea turtle, getting hands-on with sharks in a touch tank, or feeding cownose rays. The Maritime Aquarium also features some freshwater exhibits, including a large river otter tank.
Mystic Aquarium is dedicated to caring for marine animals in need, focusing on the shores of Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Alaska. It is one of the few facilities that do not have otters, such as the Adventure Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences, Mystic Aquarium, National Aquarium New, and the National Aquarium New York.
The otter exhibit at Mystic Aquarium is all indoors, with only a few spot lights and about as big as the water they swim in. The aquarium’s goal is to provide exemplary care to a variety of species while serving as the northeast’s premier marine mammal sanctuary.
