Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut, is home to over 300 different species of marine mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates, and reptiles. The aquarium features interactive and educational exhibits, including touch tanks for hands-on exposure to sharks, rays, and invertebrates. Sand tiger sharks are recognizable by their numerous protruding teeth and large, notched upper lobe of the tail. Young sharks at Mystic Aquarium have dark spots throughout their brown or grey bodies, which fade as they mature.
The aquarium offers a range of interactive and educational exhibits, including touch tanks that allow visitors to get up close and personal with sharks, rays, and invertebrates. The Ocean Solutions gallery helps visitors learn how to interact with these animals. Four juvenile sand tiger sharks were introduced to the Shark Lagoon Habitat in the Main Gallery. Before their public debut, the sharks acclimated in holding habitats located in Mystic.
Mystic Aquarium is a nonprofit 501(c) organization that offers exemplary care to a variety of species while also serving as the home to several species of sharks and rays. The young sharks at Mystic Aquarium have dark spots throughout their brown or grey bodies, which fade as they mature. Nurse sharks are smooth to the touch and rest in giant piles on the sea floor during the day.
The aquarium also features Beluga Whales, African Penguins, California Sea Lions, Northern Fur Seals, Sand Tiger Sharks, Steller Sea Lions, Spotted Seals, Harbor Seals, and more. The sand tiger shark is one of six shark species at Mystic Aquarium, the only one that gulps air at the water’s surface.
