Can A Mixing Board Be Connected To A Scarlet Focus Rite?

This video demonstrates how to connect an audio mixer to the Focusrite Scarlett Solo Audio Interface for recording or live streaming. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo has a single line-level input that allows sending a mono version of a mixer’s stereo output to your computer. To record a stereo mix, it is recommended to use the Mixer (4i4 4th Gen) or Direct (Solo and 2i2 4th Gen) view. Focusrite Control 2 features Mixer (4i4 4th Gen) or Direct (Solo and 2i2 4th Gen) view, which allows you to control the mix being sent to your outputs.

The video also covers how to use an external effects processor when tracking in Focusrite Control. This applies to the Scarlett 6i6, 18i8, and 18i20 2nd gen devices and all the Clarett range. If your interface has multiple inputs, you can create one or more mixes of the various audio sources in your system and send them to the physical mixer.

To connect a mixing console to the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2nd gen) audio interface, plug the Mic via XLR in the Scarlett and gain it there with the high-quality preamp. Importantly activate the Direct Monitor switch. The Scarlett 18i8 must be connected to the computer, running a DAW application or using the supplied Scarlet Mix.

The Focusrite Scarlett is a mixer, but it is limited in its ability to mix only the input gain levels of its two channels with simple level knobs. To connect an audio mixer to the Scarlett Solo audio interface for recording and live streaming, connect it to the Scarlett using 1/4 inch jack cables.

  • Great article and thanks for the explanation. Question though, does this then allow me to use two mics on the Scarlett Solo? I understand it may not be the optimal setup, but if I run one mic through a mixer that goes into the line level input of the Scarlett Solo, then run a 2nd mic directly to the XLR input, will I be able to record separate tracks for each mic?

  • I have a question.. I have Focusrite scarlett solo that came with condenser mic and headphones. What I want to achieve is how i can use my Focusrite solo 3rd gen, with a mixer, and a guitar, bass or piano, so that i could live stream via OBS or YouTube or Discord stream, so that others can hear my guitar stero, and with amplified effects such as an AMP from Abletone live OR my physical amplifier which is a Laney Cub 10 tube amplifier. How to I do that? Say if i was on YouTube stream, and wanted to jam with another guitarist without delay, and that he could hear my guitar with overdrive/gain/reverb/distortion/ or even with some delay effects, harmonics etc. Because if i plug my guitar into my focusrite solo now, people wont hear what i hear in Abletone Live for instance. And if i use windows record i can only record mono and without any effects at all as it doesnt record what i hear in Abletone. What I want to achieve is that i can stream on discord, OBS or Youtube directly, and have the effects of the marshall or to use my guitar amplifiers sound but without my amplifier blasting sound out in the room, i want it still in my headphones. I have heard that Voicemeeter is an option, but can i achieve this with a mixer without buying 2i2 because I have the Scarlett Solo. For the time being i cannot jam with other people on discord stream, because 1. they wont hear any of the effects that I have in Abletone Live, and if i press the monitor sound button it will sound mono and without effects at all.

  • Hello, thanks for the article, it was very helpful to me, I have a question, if I connect more inputs to the mixer such as microphones, etc. other than in the interface since I only have the scarlet alone, do the effects that I use in the daw have an effect? in the entries that are not in the interface? Thanks in advance <3

  • What if I am.going to sing live on youtube with the same arrangement you have displayed but don’t want to use headphones.. I want monitor speaker in front of me.. which I generally do ..but some issue is there.. it hit the red mark on both scarlet and mixer often and my voice is not sounding great.. where am i going wrong…? I have scarlet solo and same yamaha mixer which I connect and I do the same wiring as u mentioned. I put aux wire from scarlet to my monitor speaker so that I ll be aware what the audience is listening. What I m missing in this arrangement?

  • Great! Very useful! Thanks a lot!!! I have a Steinberg UR12 (one mic and one line input) and I had to borrow an interface with 2 line inputs to record our band rehearsals in stereo (I record a different mix from the one that comes out of the speakers, panning instruments). The interface I borrowed was a Scarlett 2i4 which has a pad button that attenuates line signal by – 10dbu. I’m looking forward to buy an interface with 2 line inputs but the ones I have in mind (UR22 and Scarlett 2i2) do not have the pad button. Do you now if they will be suitable for recording full band from the mixer or may I get clipping? Thanks again and greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷 !!!

  • Thank you so much for your instruction. If possible, please link me to another article that can connect a 2i2 v3 Focusrite with a mixer. In other words, I have a 2i2 v3 Focusrite, microphone, headphone, a webcam, an electric acoustic guitar, a mixer, and OBS software. Could you please show me how to set it up? Thank you in advance!!

  • Just to make sure I got this correct, you can only record what is coming into the line input in mono? So if I was to record a DJ set, synth, drum machine, the mixer output (as shown in this article), basically anything going into the line input on the Scarlett Solo, it will be recorded in mono. I just canceled my Solo purchase, gotta have stereo inputs when recording. I don’t sing, do podcast, or play guitar, so I don’t think I would get much use from a Solo.

  • I use the scarlett solo 2in 2out with a newly bought behringer xenyx1002fx mixer. now when i’m hooked up as you have shown on the article, I can hear myself fine using the direct monitor on the focusrite, but when I turn off the dircect monitor, I try to do a live jam with friends thru jamkazam… they cant hear me. tried everything i can think of, so I disconnect the mixer and just use the focusrite and they can hear me just fine. any ideas??? thanks and great article!

  • I have a Behringer XR12 audio mixer where I have set up my mics . I have mics on inputs 1-4, 7 and 8. As I was setting them up, I was monitoring the volume control through the headphone jack and able to control the volume with the fader on each website. It seems that everything was working great. I have the mics bussed out to BUS 1 and 2 in order to connect the Aux outputs to a Scarlett Focusrite Solo audio device. As I was monitoring the audio output of the Scarlett solo I was trying to change the volume (increase and decrease it) using the fader on the mic website but noticed that the volume would not change. I even tried muting the website but the audio was still going through and I was able to hear the audio from the mics. Can you help me to determine if there is a setting that I am missing?
