Can A Person Use A Weapon And Perform Spells?

Casting spells while holding a sword and shield requires having at least one hand free to access the somatic components of the spell. The War Caster feat allows for spells with somatic components while wielding a shield and weapon, allowing for all three actions in one action. This cantrip is not necessary for casting spells while holding a weapon, casting, and attacking in one action.

The shield can have its holy symbol embedded in it, allowing for casts with material components while wielding it with a weapon but somatic. War Caster states that you can perform the somatic components of spells even when you have weapons or a shield in one or both hands. Two-handed weapons require two hands on them when the attack.

There is a rule that you must touch your focus to cast, but this does not apply to divine foci. However, spells that don’t require mats still need a free hand, and the shield hand cannot be used. Dropping an item does not count as an attack.

If a spell has a material component, you can use the same hand holding the material component for the somatic component. If your shield is your holy, you can move your weapon to your shield hand, cast your spell with somatic components, and then switch the weapon back.

War Caster allows you to use the somatic part of your spell even when you are holding weapons and a shield. The player using the feat would describe the spell as if they were directing it with their weapon. It also helps maintain concentration on spells when taking damage.

In DND 5E, spells with somatic components require one hand free until you take a Warcaster feat. Customization/build options exist for casting spells with two-handed weapons. Arcane Armour Training is not implemented yet, but it is possible to cast spells with somatic components while holding a two-handed weapon.
