The Ethereal Sight mode of Divination Wizards’ 10th level feature, The Third Eye, allows a character to see into the Ethereal Plane as an option. Two spells, See invisibility (2nd level; Range: Self) and True seeing (6th level; Range: Touch), can be used to see into the Ethereal Plane. However, spells with the “force” descriptor can only have effects between the material and ethereal planes, unless they explicitly mention their interactions with the planes.
The Ethereal Plane is generally invisible from other planes of the Inner Sphere, so creatures under the effects of spells like ethereal jaunt and etherealness cannot be seen by creatures on the material plane. Spellcasters on the Material Plane must have some way to detect foes on the Ethereal Plane before targeting them with force-based spells.
Creatures on the Ethereal Plane are hidden and beyond the reach of spells, including divinations, unless those spells work across planes. Divinations should extend from the Ethereal Plane to the Material Plane only if they normally extend to other planes of existence.
On the Ethereal Plane, one can only affect and be affected by other creatures on that plane. Creatures that aren’t on the Ethereal Plane can’t perceive them. By using magic or the natural ability of some creatures, such as phase spiders, one can fade into the Ethereal and travel at will. Once the duration ends, the spell description says that once the duration ends, the character is sent back to their plane of origin. An ethereal creature is incorporeal on the material plane, but a creature can be incorporeal for other reasons, such as being a Shadow.

Does Truesight override blindness?
It is a common misconception that the Blinded condition overrides Truesight. However, few creatures with Truesight may possess a high Constitution saving throw, Magic Resistance, or immunity to the Blinded condition. Does Truesight negate mirror image?
The spell’s objective is to negate illusions such as invisibility or mirror image, thereby enabling users to target an individual irrespective of their visibility or hiding status. Consequently, truesight becomes a highly efficacious instrument for targeting and surmounting obstacles.
Can Truesight see pass without trace?
Pass without trace is not invisibility or a visual illusion, but an abjuration spell that is unaffected by truesight. Tremorsense doesn’t automatically nullify someone else’s stealth, but it allows you to notice someone in contact with the ground. However, a person can still move stealthily enough to escape the notice of a creature with tremorsense. This statement may have been misinterpreted for years.
Can Truesight see through blindfold?
The Blindfold of Truesight is a cursed cloth blindfold that enables the user to perceive the world in truesight within a 60-foot radius. The item may only be removed through the use of a remove curse spell.
Does invisibility work in the Ethereal Plane?
In the context of the game, the Ethereal Plane provides characters with the ability to traverse the Border Ethereal, facilitating magical travel and invisibility. Nevertheless, it is possible that JavaScript may be disabled or blocked by an extension, or that the browser in question does not support cookies.
Can Truesight see the Ethereal Plane?
The spell bestows upon a creature the ability to perceive reality as it truly is, to detect the presence of concealed magical portals, and to traverse the Ethereal Plane, extending to a distance of 120 feet. The spell requires the preparation of an eye ointment comprising mushroom powder, saffron, and fat, with an estimated cost of 25 gold pieces.
How does seeing into the Ethereal Plane work?
The Ethereal Plane is a magical realm where you can move in any direction, but only affect and be affected by creatures on that plane. You can only see and hear your plane, but everything there looks gray and you can only see anything more than 60 feet away. Creatures on the Ethereal Plane cannot perceive or interact with you unless given a special ability or magic. You ignore all objects and effects not on the Ethereal Plane, allowing you to move through objects you perceive on the plane you originated from.
When the spell ends, you return to the plane you originated from, but if you occupy the same spot as a solid object or creature, you are shunted to the nearest unoccupied space and take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you are moved.
Can invisibility be detected by detect magic?
It is not possible for Detect Magic to overcome the effects of invisibility. Furthermore, it is not capable of being used to see or sense invisible objects. Although it is capable of discerning the presence of an active spell in the vicinity, it is unable to identify the creature in question. Invisibility spells can be detected by means of the Detect Magic spell.
Does magic work on the Ethereal Plane?
The Ethereal Plane is a non-gravity, non-time, infinite, or finite size space that is strongly connected to its coexistent plane. It has no elemental or energy traits, is mildly neutral-aligned, and functions normally with spells. However, they do not cross into the Material Plane, except for spells and spell-like abilities that use magical force. Spellcasters on the Material Plane must detect foes on the Ethereal Plane before targeting them with force-based spells.
The Ethereal Plane is strongly connected to its coexistent plane, with portals from other planes opening onto it, creating conduits through the Astral Plane to reach their destination. Travelers from other planes become ethereal upon reaching the Ethereal Plane through a curtain, and must pass through another curtain or have another means of manifesting themselves to reach the Material Plane.
Plane Shift can be done as a spell, and travelers who open gates onto the Ethereal Plane or accidentally throw individuals there become ethereal. However, they are trapped there unless they can leave the Ethereal Plane or find a curtain leading out.
The Ethereal Plane is much more populated than the Astral Plane, with a variety of natives and frequent travelers.
Can you be attacked in the Ethereal Plane?
The Ethereal Plane is a non-gravity, non-electronic, and neutral-aligned space with no gravity, normal time, infinite size, and alterable morphism. Spells function normally on the Ethereal Plane but do not cross into the Material Plane. However, a fireball spell can be used against an enemy on the Ethereal Plane, but it wouldn’t affect anyone on the Material Plane. A bystander on the Material Plane can walk through an ethereal battlefield without feeling more than their neck standing up.
The only exceptions are spells and spell-like abilities that use magical force and abjurations that affect ethereal beings. Spellcasters on the Material Plane must detect foes on the Ethereal Plane before targeting them with force-based spells. Magic attacks do not cross from the Ethereal Plane to the Material Plane, including force attacks.
Do ghosts live in the Ethereal Plane?
The ability of ghosts to reside on the edge of the Ethereal Plane, in the Border Ethereal, where they can see into and be seen from the Material Plane, while simultaneously remaining unaffected by the Material Plane, is a defining characteristic of this particular supernatural entity.

As far as “half not real” goes, if we’re going to be scientific about it, cells don’t just make matter out of nothing when they divide, so it would largely depend on what the embryo is taking in to form new cells out of. So long as all of that is from the material plane, it shouldn’t really matter much if the original cell was half ethereal. Said cell might of provided the original blueprint, but is but the tiniest fraction of the actual building materials that make up the body.
I just having a lot of ideas where the Infinite Staircase is a bit like v1.0 of a TARDIS; instead of just one doorway and a control room that moves that doorway as you described here, it has instead of course many doors and infinite stairs to reach them🤔 and if that’s the case are the Lillinidi (spelling) and the Selune(?) The moon goddess the creators of the stairs or did they move in when the creators moved out and into their new and improved staircase:the TARDIS… less walking around and unwelcome visitors in the new version, and almost no climbing by comparison! Step right up and take a spin in my lair. 😎
4:20 Yah, they are pretty stupid when making some decisions in 5e. I dont like this one either. But the BIGGEST affront, as to date, is the replacement of the phlogistan with the astral. These idiotic rules make it feel like the astral is just another part of the prime material plane, with different properties concerning eating/time, things like that. The Astral is suppose to be a plane of thought/consciousness………it doesnt feel right that “you just go there when leaving wildspace.” Its like they think players new players are too stupid to understand the concept of the phol and crystal spheres……..which, did they get rid of those too??? Honestly, why are the crystal spheres even needed if theyre not keeping out the pholgistan? Anyway, just my thoughts. Maybe you could do a article on what exactly has changed in spelljammer, at least 5e wise. Thanks AJ, good article. Always appreciate your work!!

There is a certain point of interest in Rime of the Frostmaiden that hints at the illusion self maintaining stuff. . . . . . There’s a gate made by a netheres wizard that has a chance of turning an illusion into the real thing only requiring someone with the spark of life to activate it. There was a risk of success and the opposite but it all sounds to line up more or less with this so it’s interesting to see a Netherese researching and making such a discovery in an adventure (or at least referenced) Addition: 10% chance of outright being destroyed on the material plan 40% chance of becoming a black pudding 40% chance it maintains existing for 2 to 24 hours before disappearing 10% chance of becoming real permanently
Hello, AJ, I just had a thought. If Wish Stress is caused by using the wish spell to directly alter reality rather than duplicate other magical spells, depending on what you do, would using wish in the Ethereal Plane reduce the chances of wish stress as the plane is so full of creation potential that it can even make illusions real? Like, say you want to use wish to create a living thing or some other potent act of creation, I would think that the Ethereal Plane would mitigate the difficulty of using wish and the tax it places on the caster.
Hey, I just had a thought: I know most spells à la Leomund’s Magnificent Mansion (or pretty much any Leomund spell, really) and other temporary demiplane-creating spells with semi-real objects in them are technically Conjuration (you need it to summons, after all) for the most part, but could the matter conjured in such a way be based off of an illusion in the Ethereal Plane? Like creating an illusion in a small pocket of the Ethereal Plane? It would make a lot of sense: for example, how the Mansion’s floor plan is whatever you want it to be and the fact that any servant or object from the Mansion, such as food and drink, dissipate into smoke and cease to exist if brought back to the Material Plane, reacting as protomatter, but shaped by your thoughts. Seems like a shortcut a genius such as Leomund would have come up with handily.
I like to wait for your articles to build up so I can go through several in a marathon. I’ve also been plagued by the question “what is the difference between the astral and ethereal planes?” because its hard to get good answers. Lo n Behold I come back to not one, but three articles on the matter. Lets gooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I recently homebrewed a race of Alp (germanic root of the engish word “Elf”) inextricably linked to the Etherial in much the same waythe Elves are linked to the Fey Wild. Dream beings, unable to sleep, but utterly fascinated with creatures that do. This article has been inspiring and opens tons of possibilities for my little friends.
Yeah in my multi-material planes game if you mess around in the Ethereal Plane beyond a surface level … Leomund you know starts paying more attention to your party. My PC’s got smart and cast “tiny chest” in his old house in City Greyhawk on the night of Brewfest ( Halloween basically on Oerth ) .
I can envision a scenario where a once benign ruler or a cabal of wizards turn full murder hobo, conquering and looting everything they can reach. The reason being they’ve built a demiplane in the Ethereal and have decided to ‘acquire’ as much resources as they can grab in their world before finishing the move into the Ethereal and closing the door behind them. Would make for an interesting reason on why the ‘evil’ empire is acting the way it is, could also be part of a world’s backstory or setup for a hunt in the Ethereal.
How fun would it be to have a mad character or at least seen my normal people as a mad character because this guy or girl can see into this realm but have no control over it. Some of the actions like stepping aside or random fear could be from monsters passing by that the character doesn’t want to step in front of or want to hide from. Maybe even start up conversations or attempted conversation with creatures that’s not there in the physical realm. Possibly creatures that he or she sees can see them just as plainly as if they were in the same space. Maybe some of those creatures are malevolent and desire to reach out as it were to the player character.
Question: What about illusions of non illusory school’s magics? Can I minor illusion a banishment spell? Asking for a BBEG…I mean friend. I already got the rest of it. But just curious if I can eliminate all concentration for my wizard/illithid progenitor/Pokémon league champion/Thanos/aboleth source/being that causes the Crack in the wall letting Dark Metal occur/BBEG
1.) Are there things like quintessence/protomater elementals, genasi, or genies? 2.) Is this where most of the spells that permanently create things out of nothing come from? 3.) Do teleportation spells work though the ethereal or the astral? 4.) Do you think that the old demiplane seed spell can work now days? Any tips on using it besides just copying the spell directly? 5.) Can an astral projection reach the ethereal plane if they use natural planer connections, and still be in astral form (assuming you are using the version where you can do things outside the astral without the spell ending). 6.) I was under the impression that the outer planes and Sigil had no connection to the ethereal plane. Most of my planer knowledge comes from 2E Planeskape. Did I miss something, or is that from after the cosmology shake up for 3/3.5E or 4E? 7.) Are there any living planes out there? Things just going around trying to eat ethereal creatures. Maybe even being able to reach through the boarder ethereal. 8.) Do illusions have free will in the ethereal? 9.) That actually sounds like a sweat love story. A wizard who make his dream date, initially just to get off. But he/she falls in genuine love, and quests to find magical means to let the experience the multiverse. Maybe they are adventuring to get to 17th level and get True Polymorph. 10.) Have any ideas for a humebrew of a half Illusion/Protomater Construct? 11.) Is it only illusions, or can you have a stampede of flaming spheres? 12.) Did the Immascari still end up creating gods because they still had beliefs and ideals, or does it require believing in a god as a god (as opposed to how the Athar see them)?
I’m trying to supercharge Amanitas’ demiplanar explorations and make the ppace seem like an epic wizard’s tower. I want a better explanation for why his tower wards withstood the spellplague- which means I need a Weave Anchor. I’m thinking about taking a piece of the Scepter in JergalLotEoE (the circlet) and saying the Sage of thr North used it to create a permanent demiplanar door that can be opened and closed from the outside cheaply, say, only needing to cast a 1st level transmutation spell on the control unit containing the circlet. He uses this doorbell system enough times, stores magic, that fuels the wards after he gets sucked off into an ethereal time-well. That, or when the spellplague hit as he left, the scepter piece took his place and is powering the arcane tower and its wards, and removing it turns off all the power in the tower. I just need to figure out how to use this idea of “alchemist archmage studying the ethereal plane after recovering a piece of imiskari artifice, makes a deal with his slaad-gone-rogue to use time magic in the ethereal to upgrade the slaad and give the wizard his resources back to defend himself, spellplague hits as they cast the time well spell and they get stuck there on fast forward until the party frees the now gray slaad. I just don’t know what ethereal ‘lair actions’ an infinite-years-old ethereal slaad who just got let out of a rift from the deep ethereal, and it’s spilling out. Or how to show as they rise in floors that something is leaking the ethereal plane- upper floors of towers existing in the border ethereal is something that has been done before to some extent.
I have two questions. It’s my understanding that the far realm is a manifestation of tharizdun’s warped & twisted psyche. Since the dream realm borders the ethereal, can the bulges that represent a beings dreams in the color wall rupture and spill into ethereal creating new life forms similar to tharizdun & the far realm? Second, is it possible for a being to enter the ethereal and recreate a person they know in life or a historic figure i.e. lost family member, a famous general, a great inventor etc? If so, would it be a true recreation or would the recreation be limited to what the creator knew about the person i.e. if they were right or left handed, their favorite food, etc?
Alright SO!… Enter the Ethereal. Use illusion spells to create people that worship you. When you have enough worshipers you immediately become a diety of whatever sphere you are in OR a new Crystal Sphere is created, on the spot, with you as the sole diety EDIT: for bonus flavor, You use your illusion magic to create host bodies for the ghosts the roam the Ethereal and have them worship you as thanks. You become the diety of rebirth
Sorry about the teeth, but in answer to your call for questions I do have one. ATM my two groups of epic level players are looking to escape a divine level prison based in the ethereal plane; but I’m looking for a good jailor. Since the ethereal plane has been around before the upper planes what might you suggest as a creature that might rival godly power? You did mention life forms (proto life) that was the ethereal plane’s first crake at life. Cthulhuian like entities, but not having an origin in the far realm. Thoughts?
So in the livestream you mentioned that you can’t use the ethereal to travel from the prime to a upper plane. Does this mean the ethereal doesn’t exist in places like mount celestia or the abyss? If it still does can you use the ethereal as like a teleporter from say layer 50 to layer 100 in the abyss or the base of mount celestia to one of its middle peaks?
I guess it makes sense the Ethereal plane doesn’t get enough love. The gods are mental – they don’t exist if you don’t pay attention to them, so they’re going to do everything they can to make you focus on them and the Astral Planes instead of the Ethereal, creating entire histories and morality structures to force you to acknowledge them – and ignore what’s (Ethe)real.
4:52 It’s like WotC is stuck in the mindset of a article game designer who’s worried that any alteration to the rules will create mountains of work for the programming team. Except it’s a tabletop game, and it shouldn’t be so much trouble to implement things. It makes me wonder what kind of Kafkaesque nightmare working for WotC must be. If you’re dead set on discouraging “abuse,” just attach a significant cost to traversal through the spell, like hitting them with some force damage and knocking them unconscious for a few minutes or giving them a couple of levels of exhaustion.
Entities who can look at the higher dimensions in Doctor Who seem to view the TARDIS as this Lovecraftian horror with lots of tentacles and mouths, and in the books one of the severly injured War-TARDISes which has been stretched like chewing gum across time is actually mistaken for a Shoggoth. (Which then prompts the Shoggoth display being taken down from the museum of things which has never existed.)
When i hear you talk about the plasticity of reality in the etherial plane i started to wonder…do the far realm and the etherial have a connection? I don’t mean like a portal more like actually being the same thing just depending on were you are. So you have the planes of existence, around them is the border etherial. Basicaly the etherial plane just brought into form through the influence of the plane it surrounds. Then you go to the deep etherial witch is basicaly a great see with clusters of border etherial bubbles surrounding planes of existence. What if the deep etherial is just a bubble itself with the far realm around it?… or am i completely misunderstanding how the far realm works…
This “half illusion” thing honestly sounds to me like the origin of changelings or even dopplegangers. If your body is half proto matter bound and changed by your will i can easily see that as the origin for shapeshifters. Also Succubi have the natural ability to to go into the Ethereal plane…and well if succs are known for anything it is making offspring 😅 So much potential!
Well setting up a civilization in the ethereal is…terrifyingly easier than I thought it was I have a stupidly powerful empire in my world that’s on the decline and I have a list of all the cultural, economic, geographic, ect reasons why that is. But now I have the main reason why, the nobility and oligarchy are pissing off to paradise in the ethereal. Likely with the members of the heart-land left behind praying and forming cults to contact the deep ethereal to be brought where the true empire is.
Speaking of half-illusion ancestry, what’s your process, if there is one, for writing crossbreeds out of species besides the typical Half-Humans? For example, I’ve been trying to workshop a Half-Orc/Half-Lizardfolk hybrid for a while since I couldn’t find anything anyone else wrote, but I’m kinda stumped. Been loving the articles for a long time, by the way. It’s helping me focus my creative energy into making my own D&D campaign setting that I may eventually DM.
Lots of inspiration here: – being “part phantasm” is a great explanation for Tashas Custom Lineage + Shadow Touched/Fey Touched. – The multiple doors through time and space reminds me of Monsters Inc, and thus finding a “door storage area” as the source for an adventure. Locke + Key addresses this as well, but via magical keys that do multiple things. – The idea of using the Ethereal as a transport medium for specialized craft sounds fascinating. Especially when you consider crossing g Kuo Toa, Ghosts, Succubi and possibly Slaad and Night Hags. Brilliant!
The implications of only being half real are crazy… imagine like you have a 50% chance of treating any illusion as if it was physical reality, in an almost cartoon logic kind of way. Illusory tunnel becomes real, and you walk through it, but your party can’t because its still an illusion to them. Maybe illusions that you cast are 50% real, so your illusion of an adult red dragon breathing fire actually does half damage of the real thing.
Anytime I watch a article about the Ethereal Planes, I learn new things. Half-illusion living beings? That has so much story potential 😀 I already had two rival factions who used the power of the Ethereal Plane to structure reality to their liking (they’re basically psions), but the possibility of a half-real, half-protomatter entity brings a whole new dynamic to these factions. I can retroactively change the lore that the “Buddha figure” in my setting (who helped unite the sentient races to fight off a fiendish invasion), was one born of such descent, which would explain how he was able to influence reality on such a grand scale. I never wanted the explanation behind him as simple as “he’s divine” so I always kept the origin of his power a secret (as you do as DM, when you don’t have the answer to something yet), but it looks like I’ve found the missing puzzle piece! Just one question: how would being half-material, half-ethereal, affect one’s afterlife? Where would the soul of such a creature end up after death? Would it go to an outer plane corresponding with his alignment, like any other mortal, or would it go somewhere differently, like the Deep Ethereal? Would they even have a soul? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this 🙂
Hello AJ! I have some questions for ya: 1-what would happen if one where to cast the demiplane spell while inside the ethereal? 2-what could come to be if one was to cast the mirage arcane spell inside the ethereal?(specially if a illusionist wizard does it, and how would malleable illusions make it different) 3-what do you think about creating a more interesting demiplanes than the boring 30ft room as it is writen? 4-what do you think about casting the demiplane spell inside an already existing demiplane so that instead of creating a new door you could expand the existing demiplane by 30ft in every direction? 5-how could one connect a demiplane to the prime without having to cast the demiplane spell every time? Would it involve a gate, demiplane or planeshift spell made permanent?(like the crafting a magic item downtime activity) or even a homebrew spell like the planar link spell from the (in)complete tome of spells? Ps: you are my favorite lore sage and I love the ethereal ^^
Once made a small demiplane ages ago with a seed spell. In it there are 3 gigantic obsidian columns growing, where rooms and corridors have been cut out. I made it in honour of the Farscape series, where they went to a “shadow repository” where all kinds of ‘people’ can store their secret riches. Love that spell:)))
They expanded the Ethereal from its original canon. It used to be impossible to reach any outer plane via the Ethereal without the wormhole having some contact with its prime material plane or an alternative one… with no border ethereal places happening naturally. The most outer plane thing you used to be able to reach from the ethereal plane was your prime’s inner planes or an alternative prime material plane… and go to its inner planes from there. Outer planes used to be only available via the Astral plane or some kind of warp, like a wormhole touching a prime or a Gate. Modern versions really blurred some borders. This is why I love your website. You keep me in touch with what’s canon now.
When I think of the Ethereal Plane it just gives me the willies. It’s the idea of not seeing that which is always around you. Best to craft yourself a pair of goggles of True Seeing because you never know when you’ll enter a haunted area, or are being spied upon (or worse). But the real nightmarish image I get is Walking into a large tavern, and casually throwing on those goggles to discover I’m smack dab in the middle of a Phase Spider Nest.
Half Imaginative creature / Half Human … cool 😎 Seeing as it is not the prime material plane a spellcaster is not bound to the level limits. I.e: So 10th level and above spells could be created. Couldn’t you then have a huge number of high level spellcasters working together to create god like illusions of themselves to try to evolve themselves?
3.5e D&D, .. DMG section on ” Creating Magic Trap Items.” Basic a wand with limitless charges. But in regards to wands with charges it is all about marketing. Sell the pistol and it’s ammo separately. Other than a few paragraphs on mechanics. here is the concept. Create a flying orb that cast unlimited Hallucinatory Terrain enhance as a DemiShadow Magic spell. The orb is preprogramed to create island of a given description.
Thanks AJ great article, I loved the geometric crystal glass palace picture, maybe a mt celestial or Elysium location. When I play Minecraft I imagine I’m in the ethereal and I website it into reality. Every time I build it’s a different roll to a new plane so all the info is helpful for adventuring. Thanks again!
Hey AJ, what a surprise! Great article & topic! These multi worlds and planes of existence always confuse me. The illusion copy coming to life was mind blowing and the fact that spells work different on these planes of existence. The Kuo Toa being in two places at once makes perfect sense. This explains why some of them are completely crazy and why the can create Gods out of thin air. Came across the sleep arrow and started making other arrows from spells, their is a Dream spell, I now wonder if this spell pulls energy from the Dream realm. I can see already, going to love these episodes. Thanks AJ you have a wonderful day!

The Ethereal Plane has always confused me and intrigued me at the same time. Hope to get some enlightenment for its original function or purpose! Edit: So, question. The Inner Planes sort of started off first and the “castoff” from the Inner Planes becomes the mists in the Ethereal Plane and the mist eventually forms the Prime Material. Since Gods and Powers only came into existence with Prime Material beings with sapience, doesn’t that imply the Inner Planes are older than the Outer Planes?
