Can You Block Elden Ring Spells?

Parrying a spell in Elden Ring is a mechanic that deflects an enemy’s attack by using a specific skill, which some shields have. Parrying is not safe if multiple projectiles are flying towards you at once, as only one will be stopped and the rest will continue to connect. It requires more precise timing than dodging or guard countering attacks, and you often take a lot of damage if you get the timing wrong. Even if you nail your parries, you will deal less total damage per critical hit than if you were using jump attacks or guard counters to try to stance.

In Elden Ring, you must ensure that your weapon or shield has the Parry Ash of War and precisely time your input to catch an enemy’s attack the moment it strikes. Parrying in Elden Ring is difficult, but mastering it can result in critical damage to enemies with ripostes. Carian Retaliation can parry incoming spell attacks, turning the spell into projectiles that fly towards opponents. All parrying tools in Elden Ring have certain parry frames during which they will successfully block attacks and stagger opponents.

Both Golden Parry and Carian Parry can parry two magic spells to be able to repost. However, you cannot parry jump attacks and most two-handed colossal weapons and whips. There are no ultra weapons in Elden Ring. To parry an attack, you must use the parry skill at a specific moment while the enemy performs the animation of the attack.

Golden Parry is a regular skill found in Ashes of War with Sacred Affinity and can be used on small and medium Shields.
