The Catholic Church has a unique approach to worship, which involves rituals that invoke the devil and profane the Eucharist, often leading to sexual activity and even crimes. These rituals are part of a broader cultural shift towards recognizing and dealing with the demonically possessed. Witchcraft is rarely mentioned in official documents, but ideas about its dangers are growing. The Vatican is training priests to recognize and deal with the demonically possessed, as part of a new engagement with an enchanted world.
A six-day exorcism conference in Rome attracted 60 Catholic clergy, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers, and youth workers to discuss how to handle the demonically possessed. When violence desecrates a blessed item or location, Catholics believe the attack literally “de-sacralizes” it, requiring the local bishop to rededicate or reconsecrate it for sacred use. The exorcist then prays and commands for the demons to retreat, recitating certain prayers such as the Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and the Athanasian Creed.
Catholics, Catechumens, Non-Catholic Christians who request it, and non-Catholics can receive this specialized blessing. A parody of the Catholic ritual was celebrated by a defrocked priest who used a naked woman for his altar and sacrificed living creatures, including children. Satanic rituals, both called the “Satanic Mass”, are central parts of these rituals, assuming that possessed persons retain their free will.
The Catholic Church has a Major Rite of Exorcism only carried out when there is a perceived case of demonic occupation. These rituals encompass the newness of Christian worship, the reality of Satan and his snares against men, satanic rites in the Church’s judgment, and possible changes to the rites.
