The LG Magic Remote is a top-of-the-line device that offers innovative features for enhancing your entertainment experience. It allows for quick, easy navigation and can be used as a cursor or remote control. However, it differs from the Full Standard remote control as it needs to be paired with only one TV for proper functionality. The Magic Remote is designed to fit in the hand more effectively than some slimmer remotes, such as the secondary remote found with Samsung TVs.
The 2019-2020 Magic remote is compatible with TVs from 2017, while the new MR21 remote is compatible with 2019-2020 TVs in 2021. The Magic Remote is compatible with LG OLED TVs from 2022, but older models are also suitable. However, the Magic Remote is not compatible with lower-end cheaper TVs, which use a more traditional remote.
The LG Magic Remote allows users to control smart TVs with their voice, enhancing their entertainment experience. However, the Magic Remote does not come with the LG TV model 70UQ7070ZUD, which comes with a standard non-voice infra-red remote control. The LG Smart TV includes a Magic Remote Control that acts as both a cursor and a remote control, and a Screen Remote that allows users to operate their Smart TV.
LG has a smartphone app called “Smart Remote” for its later smart TV models, which is free for switching the TV on and off, muting, and more. Some LG televisions include a standard remote instead of a Magic Remote, and the Magic Remote alone has led some users to leave other streaming platforms like Roku behind.

Thank you for this article. It has helped tremendously. Unfortunately, I am still in the dark about one thing. My dog, a 5 lb Yorkie, stepped on a button—I do not know which one—and now my remote is talking and explaining everything displayed on the TV at 90 MPH. It sounds like the chipmunks and is highly annoying. Do you know what setting I should go to to change the continuous fast-talking audio?
I just got my new LG TV with Magic Remote Control, but it’s working so slow. The cursor doesn’t respond as expected. LG has named it as “Magic”, but this is the worst remote control I have ever had. I thought it was the batteries, but same result with new one. I keep getting a message on the TV screen informing about bad signals/connections with the remote. I have paired it several times, and I have run the latest updates on my LG TV. Cannot understand why a “magical” remote control not working. Maybe I should buy a new universal remote control, and just leave LGs “magial” remote? Or is there anything that can be done with the settings?
This is all so new to me. Your article helped immensely because there was absolutely NO instructions on my two new LG OLED televisions! Stupid. If only I had a hard copy of your explanations so I could actually READ all this info EASILY and quickly whilst using it and then memorizing its through practice.
Thanks so much for your lucid explanation and demonstration of this remote. I keep coming back to it to learn some more because although I think I’ve gotten it I have to come back and watch it again. So far my back button does not take me back to the last cable website I watched. Could I have missed something?
Hello, I am using the LG C1 and my magic remote is the same as you. The remote is NOT a Bluetooth ONLY remote. In fact it is an IR and Bluetooth remote combined. The power button is definitely IR. You may try to block the front of the remote and press the remote button and see if you can turn the TV on and off. The LG TV is so smart and can recognize my set top box brand and automatically allows my magic control to control my set top box with some limited controls such as PLAY PAUSE CHANGING website. My set top box is IR only, so that proves the LG Smart control has IR function. Please try if you can use the smart remote to control you set top box. Have a nice play 😉 BTW: my set top box has recording function.
I just got my c1 after my 2019 nanocell decided to display horizontal lines. I miss the pause and play buttons on the old remote. I hate they removed those…just clicking the middle button is clunky in some apps. In Disney+ you have to click it to get the play bar and then click it again instead of just hitting the pause button.
Hello, you used the remote wheel for scrolling in the article, around 7:08. I use the same remote control but the wheel is not scrolling at all. Should it be enabled in some menu on the TV or with some button combination on the remote? Tried to disconnect and then re-pair the remote but this didn’t help. WebOS updated itself yesterday. Thank you!
Excellent article! Very clearly spelled out with good camera and no mumbo jumbo talk to distract. The only one was when you had the pointer at Prince William’s forehead and you said “No disrespect”. But THAT was funny! Anywa, I’ve bought a new LG a little over 2 months ago and pretty much use it to watch DVDs or have it connected to my PC and work from there. I’m just so used to the PC and standard mouse that I didn’t really need too much work with the LG remote other than settings, etc. I figured I’d learn the spoken word and other things when I got around to it. Well. I got around to it. My girlfriend has a new LG 50″ arriving Saturday and I know she won’t be too keen on using a new remote that is much different and a bit complicated compared to her other smart tv standard Firestick type remote. So I’ll need to at least get her up so speed on spoken word and accessing a site. No more than that. But I myself will utilize a lot more of it after perusal this. Navigating from one setting, site, etc. without having to keep on backtracking and opening new screens will be a relief. So basically it took me having to get my girlfriend up to speed on the remote to actually get MYSELF up to speed. Again. Excellent article.
This was a really good article, but I am very new to this remote. What I would like to know is, if you are perusal a show on Netflix for example, how do you pause and stop the show. If you stop the show you are perusal on Netflix, will it resume in the same place again when you want to watch it again in a few days. Does this apply to perusal any show in any app. Look forward to receiving some replies.
Great article! Thank you so much! One question, the back button does not bring me back to the last website watched. Am I missing something? It seems quite silly that the one option that everyone uses to switch between two shows is not on this extremely intricate remote. I’m hoping there is something that I missed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best article I’ve seen on this remote. Here’s a question I can’t get an answer to elsewhere and you seem as knowledgeable as anyone on this. I’ve figured out everything I need to do except how to pause, fast forward, rewind, or skip either live tv or my dvr recorded programs. It’s an Arris dvr with frontier FIOS. I hate having to have our STB remote out just to do these. I’ve got the ir blaster from tv to STB so I can change websites, and I can get to dvr programs thru the … button and selecting menu, I just can’t figure how to FF, skip, etc. Any answers greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this great tutorial! I have one issue with this remote and its quite annoying. The volume control works well when using the internal loudspeakers of the TV. But when I use my home surround system (Yamaha) over HDMI arc, every step of adjusting the volume seems to give only half the change of level, compared to internal speakers. The result is that adjusting volume level is taking quite long time/ many steps. Is there a way to fix this? I also was thinking what a great thing if the wheel could be used for controlling the sound volume in some way. I think it’s much more usable to change level than to scroll websites only. Anyone seen a mod/setting for this?
Just saying I work for an internet service provider and I got a call from a customer asking how to connect this device to their wifi and it is not in my scope of support to teach a person how to use their personal gadgets but thanks to this article showing me how to use the customers remoteand & TV I was then able then teach them how to use their device to connect to our services. Just saying thank you for this article you are an all star!!!
Hi there. Really helpful article as you don’t seem to get instructions with a new LG tv anymore. I’ve installed a usb storage device, so i can record freeview play programs (which works fine). My question is, is there a way of pausing live tv (freeview play)using the remote? I thought pushing the middle button would do it, but nothing happens. When i was streaming on all4 last night, it worked then. Very bizarre. Any help would be appreciated 🙏👍
I can’t believe how complicated this remote is. I just want to watch tv. Thank you so much this article, though. You’re an expert! we’re actually decided to take it back becuase there’s too much to learn. We ran into a problem where the little preview sceen when you fast forward is 10 minutes ahead of the show. it’s not in sync. Do you know why that happened? thanks!
Great tutorial even a year later. But as I get familiar with this new TV and its “modern” Magic remote control. Countless forums and help articles have yet to solve the issue of being able to Program the remote to control volume when running optical output to a simple two website stereo system!impossible to easily be able to integrate my two website stereo system that does not have HDMI /ARC loop built-in. orward two steps back if it’s going to be two remotes again just to control volume!!
I’ve had my lg tv about 1 year and the magic remote uses new batteries top of the line batteries every 3 to 4 weeks and no one seems to know why. i just bought a generic remote to see if the batteries last .We also have a Samsung TV and the batteries will last two years. Have you ever heard of this problem with the magic LG remote ..Thanks
I am looking into returning LG C1 tv because of this remote. Causes alot of pain when trying to fast-forward when perusal dvr on sling. After spending so much money on the TV I was expecting a smooth remote. Any way to resolve this issue. I have to keep clicking to move 30 sec ahead. It doesn’t continuous move and gast forward speed is so slow. The mouse is a pain to use for this function.
A very good start i enjoyed perusal your article very much, you were very insightful so you helped me a lot I will be staying with you can you do some more articles for us all thank you 😀 but don’t take this the wrong way, can you just slow down a little for each article that’s all and separate each of your articles if you would it gives me more time to understand thank you once again and good luck with everything else you do XX
it seems that the magic remote just adds a few extra features added to the existing features on the normal remote. Question is why doesn’t LG provide the magic remote right in the package of the TV? Why should we purchase an additional accessory just for this little additions. Couldn’t LG provide a complete remote with the TV itself so that we don’t end up with 2 remotes of the same TV ?
Great explanations for this remote. There is no pause button. Is it impossible to pause what you are perusal — whether it is on streaming tv, YouTube, or anywhere else? I just bought an LG OLEDC2. Very irritating not to be able to pause something when you get interrupted with a phone call, for instance.
I got this remote with my OLED48C14 and I hate it. I have to press the D pad so hard for it to register movements you can’t even do it with your fingers. I have to use the joint of my thumb to get the right press to do anything. It’s crap compared to the older one with the raised dish I have for my 65″
TIP BELOW: My LG OLED 77 A1 has been nothing but trouble since day one and my magic remote arrow stopped working a few days ago and the old google tips to re-register does NOT work on the new remote. To re-register the new (the one You review) You need to hold down setting + home button till it says registered (help in tv described this – said 3seconds but took longer than that and my TV rebooted when scrooling the help :-S ) Also reboots when trying to make ARC work over HDMI and gives a message that there are some problems please come back later when trying after reboot. At least better than on old .60FW where TV just hang and had to pull plug several times and then factorey reset severaltimes the first days). Onyl had it for a week so LG will need to swap some boards out I think cause there are some many issues, odd RGB stripe pattern occur sometimes in picture.
Need help to use BASIC buttons. My SENIOR parents got their FIRST “SMART TV” today. (End of December 2022) It’s an LG. Mum knows how to find free movies on youtube in her android phone. The tv is a whole other world!? I’ve never had a smart tv myself so we’re ALL in the dark. How do we pause or search & skip ads in youtube?? How do we connect my mum’s android phone to the tv? How do we connect to the internet? It’s crazy mindboggling how complicated these “smart” tv’s & their convoluted remotes are!?
Erm. umm. + Beats me why you don`t work for LG; because they have not bothered to do any of this as far as I can tell. They certainly wouldn`t give a straight answer as to `why not`. I could not find my 65NANO91* in your list; but it seems the 65NANO90 is similar enough (*as different country (it seems)).
It’s really absurd. My LG TV always shows some messages related to the “magic remote”, but it has been impossible to find out what this is supposed to be. So I gave up a few days after using my brand new TV. Now, 4 years later, I gave it another try to figure out what my TV is talking about all this time. It’s like a proof of concept of bad usability. Well failed LG, well failed.
I’m thinking of putting a sound bar under my LG but am scared it will block a signal from the remote. I hear the remote is not infrared rather, is Bluetooth. But saw comments that a sound bar will block thr on/off signal. Any feedback?? Don’t want to buy a sound bar if it will mess anything up. Thanks!!
I just bought the LG 55′ smart TV from Sams Club and was very disappointed to find out that the remote does not have the caption (cc) and the picture frame size buttons. Is there any way to customize the numbers button to do these 2 commands? Also my TV is very slow to react to the remote commands which is very disappointing too.
Still can not get my DVD player or X box hooked up. Last week I got a 5 way splitter so i can connect a blue ray player & my Roku up along with a wireless keyboard. I am trying to set up my Sony wireless headset. ( Mom say TV to loud @ 1 am kids will be kids ) Other than that this is a great set. My boy wants to connect his Firestick in port no. 2. 🙂 Thank u 4 posting. I will b back 4 more info.
Does this work for uhd tv? I got a magic remote that looks different but its not compatible with my tv. I didn’t even know about the magic remote until someone said online that my LG uhd tvs had it. But every time I try looking up my tv model, it’s almost as the model does not exist. It just brings up lg oled.
I need to vent. What the hell is up with not having any white on the volume buttons. When i watch films it’s usually dark, so i can’t see the volume, why doesn’t it light up, my 14 year old remote could do that. My big thumbs will not differentiate between a plus and a minus slightly raised up. You would have thort for a great telly this is, it would have a well thort out remote. No. Then there’s the constant button bashing trying to get one to work. I mean how many times do I need to press it before it works ffs. I have new batterys in there too. Does anyone have this problem ? Thanks, top vid though 😎👍
I have this remote, the one big flaw is that there is no lighting on it at all. In the dark you can’t tell, or I can’t, what is what. VERY maddening. If there is a lighting function please let me know. I like all the lights off when I’m perusal TV but this makes it very hard to do anything on the remote at all. If there is no lighting feature what a huge flaw this is.
I’m so happy to be there in the next T LG forget to take the picture ❤we are on our way to talk about the new update on our way to get our stuff done ☑️ will you be home tomorrow afternoon to get some stuff for your house please let me know when you’re ready for your appointment please thank you for 0011363! I’m so sorry hfs I’m not the year old I just
A really helpful article for newbies to the Magic Remote like myself. At 2:45, the button with three dots, mine does nothing at all. Is there someway I can get it to work at all please? Also, I cannot find any button to allow me to see the BBCs text service for news and sports, can this be done at all please?
Has anyone had the issue where the power button is lit up red all the time and if you press anything nothing happens or it either does something but its like the buttons react different like on youtube every button plays and pauses and nothing else. I did see somewhere that it may need cleaning from inside so wondered if anyone has had this issue.
Unfortunately the one thing I wanted to know wasn’t covered. How do you fast-forward when perusal a programme or film? Say, you were perusal a film on live TV, but missed the last 10 minutes, so wanted to watch it on the relevant catch-up service the next day. You just want to go directly to the last 10 minutes of the show. I haven’t been able to find out how to do this very basic thing. You can pause it and see where you are on the timeline, but don’t seem able to drag the cursor along. Very annoying to have to sit through the whole frigging thing again.
I was hoping that you would have used the audio guidance more here. However, I did notice that it kicked on sometimes, whenever you voice that you wanted to open certain apps, in this case, YouTube. Why can only the directional arrows be one on your guidance is turned on? Is there any? why, when the audio guidance is turned on, and the directional arrows only be you? Are there any future updates to audio guide me to where the rest of the remote can be used as well?
