Do Omens And Signs Exist?

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in connecting with the world around us through the observation of signs and omens. A study found that 7- to 9-year-old children with a concept of a supernatural force are more likely to allow a “sign” to influence their behavior. These signs can be shocking or alarming, but ultimately arise for our highest good.

Understanding omens and symbols is crucial for practitioners of various magical traditions, as they often appear in nature. By correctly interpreting these signs and omens, we can know when we’re on the right path, making wise choices, and living aligned with our spiritual beliefs.

An omen, also known as a portent, is a phenomenon believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. The concept of signs, which indicate future events, was first developed in ancient Mesopotamia. The collections of omens, interpreting them in heaven or on earth, were first written down during the Old Babylonian period.

Spiritual signs and omens are like winks or nudges from the Universe, guiding us toward greater wisdom, truth, and peace. Throughout the ancient world, omens were believed, divined, and obeyed. Signs, signals, and omens are the universe’s way of communicating with us. By paying attention and interpreting these messages, we can navigate life with greater wisdom, truth, and peace.

In this paperback, the author presents 75 exercises for finding signs and omens in the everyday world.

📹 Signs and Omens – Is it a Sign?║Witchcraft

See More ☾ Signs and omens are one of the most questioned aspects of witchcraft and magick. What is a sign? What counts?

Is omen a human?

Omen, the first Radiant to join the VALORANT Protocol, has a mysterious and dark past intertwined with Viper’s. His central focus is an unknown event or accident that ripped him apart and transformed him into his current state. The theme of key plot points and events being “unknown” is recurring, with Omen being the mysterious and edgy character with an amnesia mirroring our lack of knowledge about him.

Omen has a cynical, cheerless personality, dark sense of humor, and grim attitude. His main goal is to recover his memories of his past self. Omen has intriguing voicelines with Cypher and Viper, Agents who seem to have some knowledge about his past.

Is omen a good or bad thing?

Omens are often misunderstood due to their association with bad luck, but their interpretation varies across cultures and countries. In some cultures, an ominous sign may signify good luck, while in others, it may signify a lifetime of good luck. Oscar Wilde argued that there is no such thing as an omen, as destiny is too wise or cruel for that. Synonyms for omens include augur, auspicate, betoken, bode, forecast, foreshadow, foretell, portend, predict, prefigure, presage, and prognosticate.

Can Christians believe in omens?

Leviticus 19:26 emphasizes that Christians should not interpret omens, as it is not encouraged in Scripture to interpret the will of God out of daily circumstances. Christians often describe favorable circumstances as “open doors” and try to feel at ease moving forward, assuring themselves that the easier or clearer path must be what God intends for them. However, there is nothing in Scripture that encourages this, and they may be unsure of their actions and fear that they are out of God’s will.

The Lord rests his favor on us through faith in Jesus Christ’s atoning work, and if God gave us his own son, he will graciously give us all things. We cannot increase or decrease his favor by reading our circumstances, as his favor is not grounded in our ability to discern the omens but in Christ’s love and giving himself for us.

To make the best decision, given what we know, and move on, God does not hold us accountable for what he hasn’t revealed to us. We should examine our motives honestly, bring Scripture to bear on our decision, and be constant in prayer. At some point, with only partial knowledge, we must pull the trigger, as we are safe as children of God, not because we successfully interpreted the omens.

How do you know if the universe is warning you?

The text provides nine warning signs from the universe, including accidents, blockages in ideas, negative road signs, feeling ill, stress, nervousness, carelessness, loss of things, and fights. It also mentions products like Armastusekrismtali, Küllusekrismtali, CBD, and other products that may cause these signs. The text also mentions the potential for high prices for these products and articles. It is advised to be cautious and avoid these warning signs to avoid potential issues.

Are there such things as omens?

The observation of phenomena and the subsequent interpretation of these observations as either good or bad fortune, or as a sign of impending change, was a common practice in ancient times. Such phenomena included those observed in lightning, cloud movements, bird flight, and the paths traversed by sacred animals. Each sign was assigned a specific meaning, such as the type of bird observed or the direction of its flight. These signs were further subdivided into minor categories, each with a distinct interpretation.

What does God say about omens?

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 proscribes the practice of individuals engaging in activities pertaining to divination, magic, omen-seeking, sorcery, spell-binding, spirit medium consultation, fortune-telling, or any other supernatural practices. It is thus advised that such individuals should not be permitted within the household.

Why do omens exist?

Why do omens exist?

In ancient times, oionos (omens) were defined as carnivorous vultures, especially prophetic birds, that augurs used to predict the future. They observed the bird’s cries and the direction it flew, and saw lightning or thunder as omens sent from Zeus. Omens represented the divine will and decisions of the gods, their positioning opposite human endeavors. The Greeks paid special attention to these signs, considering vultures from the left a bad omen and heron or lightning to the right a positive one.

In ancient Roman religion, augurs interpreted the flights of birds to ascertain the will of the gods in response to specific questions. Their system was complex, with bird-signs on the left being favourable (auspicious) and one on the right unfavourable (inauspicious). Augurs also studied the behavior of domesticated, sacred chickens before embarking on important enterprises, such as senatorial meetings, the passage of a new law, or a battle. These formal “divine consultations” by augurs are known as “taking the auspices”.

Haruspices examined the liver, lungs, and entrails of animals sacrifice to interpret the will of the gods, again in response to clear and specific proposals. Some omens came in the form of prodigies, unnatural, aberrant or unusual phenomena such as meteor showers, hermaphrodite births, or “blood rain”, any of which could signify that the gods had somehow been angered. The meaning and import of reported prodigies were officially debated and decided by the Roman senate, with advice from religious experts. Threatening signs could then be officially expiated and the gods placated with the appropriate sacrifice and rituals.

Many Romans believed that particular words, phrases, or incidents might carry prophetic content aimed at particular individuals who witnessed or heard them. Such “private” omens could be accepted and their benefits secured (or their threat averted) by using countersigns or verbal formulas such as accepit omen or arripuit omen. Orator and statesman Cicero, though an augur himself, was skeptical of unsolicited, personal omens.

In Suetonius’s “Lives of the Caesars”, the deaths of various emperors are presaged by omens and dreams, such as Emperor Caligula dreaming that he stood before Jupiter, king of the gods, and was kicked down from heaven to earth.

How do you identify an omen?

An omen is a sign or warning of something to come, often indicating a future direction. To identify an omen, one must examine their past, internal trajectory, and self-knowledge. Without a clear understanding of oneself, it becomes difficult to determine one’s future. To identify omens, one must first identify the past events that shaped their current identity, then evaluate their current position and purpose.

Are superstitions against the Bible?

Are superstitions against the Bible?

The text emphasizes that God, the Lord of heaven and earth, is in complete control of all things and does as He pleases. Superstition is irrational and unreasonable for Christians, as it demonstrates a lack of belief in God’s word and does not encourage reason. Christians should take comfort in knowing that the Lord is in total control of everything that happens, and even when something bad happens to them, they can rest assured that He is using every situation for His glory and our good.

This is exemplified in Romans 8:28, where it is said that even when something bad happens, God is using every situation for His glory and our good. The text encourages Christians to take comfort in knowing that God is in control, even when faced with challenges or obstacles.

Are superstitions real?

Are superstitions real?

Superstitions are believed to be a result of co-occurring but non-related events, which can help with difficult moments and decrease anxiety. Superstitions increase when public stress levels increase, particularly during economic, political, or social depressions. In Germany between 1918 and 1940, levels of superstition were high, correlated with economic stress. Astrology, a significant belief in personal growth, provides predictions and explanations for earthly events using rules about the relative positions and movements of heavenly bodies.

While 75 of the population read their horoscope, only 25 believe in it. Astrology is scientific in its own way, focusing on explaining the natural world using observable evidence like star movement to formulate hypotheses. However, there is evidence that astrology is not quite scientific, as it has not changed its ideas for years or decades, and there is no evidence of astrology contributing to new scientific discoveries. There is no fair, scientific way of gathering evidence except for experiences reported by people, and the astrological community often ignores contradictory evidence.

  • As a young boy (early 1960’s) I saw a man on the street corner that said, “Repent for the end is near”. I asked my Mom what that meant. I have kept her answer in my heart ever since. She said, “Every person who is born has an end time which is near. Because of that, you should live every moment loving God rather than be worried about when your time is up. You will be happier and those around you will be too.” Thanks Mom, and you Rev for telling it like it is. 😮

  • Trae Crowder posted a article named Liberal Redneck – Why Didn’t the Rapture Happen During the Eclipse? In the comments section, one man posted this: “I was out at a small town park in Ohio perusal the sky yesterday, and a fellow in a pickup pulls up and screams “Jesus is almost here!” Without missing a beat, my daughter shouts back at him “bet you wish you’d spent more time feeding the poor!” Proud of that girl.” Lord, how I wish I could Like that comment multiple times!

  • Thank you for your words of wisdom and hope as always Reverend Trevors. As a biology nerd, I’m hoping this related bit of news will bring some comic relief. Marjorie’s boyfriend put out a similar “warning” article. In it he says that the cicadas that are emerging this summer are a plague of locusts. These are two very different species of insects. The cicadas will emerge from the many years spent underground in their juvenile form. They will pupate just like butterflies and conceive the next generation in just a few days. This last stage of their is so short that they do not even develop mouth parts to eat with. They die in just a few days. He says they will attack people. They couldn’t even if they wanted to, nor can they destroy crops or anything for that matter. They make for a few noisy summer nights, but that’s it. Please feel free to also ignore them as a sign of the apocalypse 😂

  • Thank you Rev, very straight to truth. There was so much doom and gloom predicted it was dizzying. When I watched the eclipse and the sun came back after darkness, it seemed a glorious thing, that the light we depend on comes from God for us, and the darkness is only temporary. The Lord is right here with us, and being paranoid makes us completely distracted for the miracles He does every day.💖💖💖

  • They seek more to control others when they say “repent”. They don’t want to do the “right thing” that Jesus advocated (feed the hungry, heal the sick, welcome the stranger, etc.) but they’d rather try to control others (when it comes to things like gender affirmation, abortion, contraception, etc.) They may choose those things they want to control others regarding, but they don’t want others to have them. As Jesus says, “hypocrites.” All those predictions remind me of Hal Lindsey’s Late Great Planet Earth. When that came out, it scared me to the point where I could barely function. Fortunately, I was able to speak with a Sunday School teacher I had when I was much younger. (Mom was going to a different church at that time and didn’t want me to go back to the previous one. Papa, fortunately since I didn’t drive, gave me a ride so that I could speak with her.) She talked about how many of the “signs and portents” were things that they were seeing back in Jesus’ time and about Jewish apocryphal literature, and also brought up the points you did (about “no ones the day or the time except the Father.”) We all need people like the Sunday School teacher and like you to point out the way that people try to scare us. Scared people are easier to control in ways that those who like to control people favor. But we don’t need to be fearful!

  • Anyone who fears the end times has some thinking to do, if you ask me. I don’t spend time on that prospect, but what I do spend time on? Every person I meet or even see, I try to love. I think it makes a difference. I have noticed moods change, I have seen others suddenly help someone else out. This, in my opinion, is our directive, regardless of when the “end” comes. Thank you, Rev, as always.

  • Amen brother I looked up the verses myself and had the same conclusion she doesn’t get it. However we here in the United States do need to get right with our adversaries not because the end is coming that the end of times is here but because in order to live at peace with one another we need to reach out in peace to one another.😊

  • Moscow Marjorie reminds me of Lady Elaine Fairchild on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.” For some reason, she was a bully toward the kids in the Land of Make-Believe. She frightened them all into thinking they had to know their alphabet and their numbers before their first day of preschool OR ELSE. I don’t know why all the Moscow Marjories of the world take such delight in being cruel and scaring people with lies. You’re right—there is profit to be made off people’s fears. But they get such joy out of hurting people. They’re so happy and gleeful when they’re cruel for cruelty’s sake. And that’s what I don’t get.

  • Those passages in Luke conflict with a lot of evangelical teachings. Some of those silly buggers don’t catch on that those passages are also a defense of learning how the Earth was created and how life evolved. It’s amusing to see you and Beau make articles about the exact same thing and quote the exact same Bible verses within a couple of days of each other.

  • Something happened to me this morning, that made me realize just how far down we gone as a country. I went in at 10:00 for a hair appointment. Another lady came in for her appointment at the same time. So my hairdresser checked the calendar, and for some reason, she had been deleted. They were talking and she was trying to reschedule, but she came from out of town and wasn’t going to be able to come in later in the week. My appointment was going to be at least 2 hours, so I asked my hairdresser if she had time to do her first, then me. She said she did, so I told her to do the other lady first and I would do some shopping and be back in an hour. The other lady was so flabbergasted that I would do that, that she left a $50 bill for me to put towards my service. She said she hadn’t seen a stranger do that sort of kindness in so long, she wanted me to know how much it meant. I thought, wow – that says a lot about how selfish we’ve become. To me it just seemed like the logical thing to do, but to her it meant the world. Anyway, your talk reminded me of that so thought I’d share. We never know how just the least amount of kindness can impact someone else. Good talk, Reverend Ed!

  • Thing is, we can all have a relationship with God right here in the world of the flesh; and what an amazing time it will be when we are finally in the Kingdom he created for us; having heavenly bodies no longer tied to a sinful nature. So while we wait, just rejoice that Jesus is still here with us in the Holy Spirit!

  • It was a glorious eclipse; my brother and I traveled to see it in a zoo in Indianapolis: I saw no omen. I heard birds chirping wildly and lots of sirens that turned out to be gibbons. Lions that had been sleeping when I had first seen them roared provocatively after the eclipse. That was the only omen whose effect I noticed. There’s plenty about which we Americans have cause to repent. We need no eclipse to tell us that. Somehow I see global warming far more dangerous an omen than any other signs of apocalypse.

  • Thanks Rev Ed, hope you had a lotta fun at Basketball tournament 👍.. I’m in Pennsylvania the world didn’t end with solar eclipse, I wasn’t Panicked at 🤯.. These people like Marjorie they love doomsday oh my…Also being in Pennsylvania the only thing wrong during eclipse was it was cloudy 😕.. God bless 🕊️

  • Education in the USA has been dumbed down to the point that we can not read books and understand the meaning. We can not read our own “Holy Books” books and understand the teachings. Reading the Bible or Qu’ran is fine, but letting others tell you what it says in the Bible or Qu’ran and what it means is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

  • How do you know so well how to interpret scripture? I read it and still have no idea what it really means. Probably because i was raised in fundamentalist churches and taught to take the words literally and not to extrapolate interpretations. I have switched frim KJV (which means about as much as Greek to my brain) to NRSV and NIV which i can better understand. And I have ordered my first Study Bible (SBL – the former Harper Collins) to try and expand my understanding of the texts. Thanks for your insight to those of us who are less assured about the true spirit of Biblical passages. ❤🙏🏼

  • Hello Reverend Ed I thank you for keeping me calm in the political mess we have been thrown into. I live in Oklahoma, and as you know, Ryan Walter’s has demanded that all teachers use the Bible in their classrooms 5th and up in teaching their lessons. Exactly what Margoree has done with her complete misinterpretation of the verse she cited is exactly what I fear for our kids. Wednesday is the first day of school. It terrifies me to think that my grandsons and others may get confused about the meaning of the verse by the misinterpretation from the teacher. I respect all religions. I feel as long as they are praying that God can hear them. I can’t imagine if an atheist itrying to use the bible to teach a lesson. How would they interpret the meaning of that verse? An atheist and a scientist walk into a school to teach our kids the bible. It sounds like a really bad joke, but it’s not. Unfortunately, it’s my reality. Oh my! I ask if you would help me pray for the teachers and the kids . I pray that it won’t confuse or make the kids rebel against the search for God and Jesus by forcing them in the manner that has demanded. Ryan has received a lot of backlash, but he has dug in by saying, “If they refuse, they may lose their license,” it’s sad. I pray you have a wonderful night . God bless you 🙏 Amen

  • A call to repentance is always right. A call to repentance because of signs and wonders showing that Judgment is near at hand might be right only by coincidence: Judgment is coming sometime! Not even the Son knows, but the Father only. (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32. It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority. Acts 1:7 Ask yourself every day, “How would I live if I knew that Jesus were returning tomorrow?” And then do it. That’s the message in these texts.

  • Just a quick thought about the end times. I think it was in one of Paul’s letters to that Thessalonians where he is writing to a group of Christians who have heard that the end what’s near and he said get up off of the Hill that you’re camped out on and go back to work go back to spreading the good news Jesus Christ.

  • Thank you Reverand Ed, for pulling out the wise words again and setting them out here to help us. I feel better. I am helping the least of these, those in prison and those who are old and sick. I don’t have much, but I use what I have and sometimes I feel so overwhelmed with the weight of this world. If a war comes here to our country I don’t think I will make it. So anyways, I guess if I keep helping where I can, that’s what I’ll be doing when I meet my maker. I worry for my kids though. I’m glad you’re here showing us the path forward.

  • As a child many years ago I read the New Testament and in the book of Revelation I became fearful. The great Whore ( pastor taught me a woman represents a church) wears purple and scarlet drinks blood of the saints and has daughters ( offspring churches). What Church fits this exactly? Not Judaism or Islam. So what is the abomination in that cup and the blasphemies written all over it? According to Judaism and Islam this would be the association of partners with the ONE GOD. Things that make me go hmmmmm. But according to Isaiah 55:6-9 and Ezekiel 18:19 and on really that whole chapter still leaves one an option to choose, how great is God. Things that make me go hmmmmm.

  • Thanks, Reverend Ed, for reminding us that Jesus said that no one, not even He, The Son, knew the day and the hour of the end, only The Father knew. Why would God discredit His Son and move (literally) Heaven and Earth to tip us off that the end was near, especially for the sake of the USA specifically?

  • One of my negative habits that I’m working on, is assuming someone is upset with me, with no proof to back this thought up. In my head I think that the reason they haven’t contacted me is because I did something wrong or said something wrong. For me, the height of arrogance is thinking you know what God is thinking. Sending peace-filled thoughts to everyone.

  • Thank you for this beautiful and calming message. ❤ It’s good to know in these times that we don’t have to live in fear. It’s good to recognize/ remember that fear is one of the tools of manipulation that are being used for propaganda and selfish reasons by politicians and others who seek power. I completely agree with you that so many of these politicians are preaching that they know what God will do/ wants from us, yet can’t even see the needs of suffering people/ people who need our help right in front of them. I think this complete lack of love and empathy that I see with Donald Trump and MAGA preachers is what I find the most disturbing. I’m so glad that Gods love is bogger than that.

  • “End Times”… The idea certainly generates excitement. There are “end times” for governments. But physical end times that would bring about the destruction of all life on Earth? Not going to happen. In the theology that I follow, Jesus was the human incarnation of our Paradise Creator Son, head of our universe. Out of all the inhabited worlds in our universe, he chose ours for his mortal experience requirement. He came here to redeem us. He’s not about to let us fail. Ever.

  • We should never take the word of a chameleon who pretends to be a biblical scholar and one to whom God speaks in personal messages. Anyone can cherry-pick Scripture to make it fit their personal agenda. In the case of MTG, she wears many hats: prophet, queen, theocrat, entitled “Karen,” all the while pretending to do her job of representing the people. The posts are evidence of her wearing her queen Karen theocratic biblical scholar hats. Her words are always weapons grade obtuse.

  • Republican’s continual self Righteous hypocrisy and projection of their own sinful words actions and views repeatedly bring to mind our Jesus’s words concerning seeing a splinter in the eye of one’s neighbor. Where Christ says, ( paraphrasing) “You hypocrite!. Before going to take the splinter from your neighbor’s eye, you need to first remove the plank from your own eye. Only then you will be able to see clearly to remove the splinter from your neighbor’s eye. In Christ’s peace🙏🕊❤️

  • I am not a fan of MTG and don’t know her motive for what she wrote, nor do you, but she hit a straight shot with a crooked bat. Yes, she used an inappropriate verse to make her point, but earthquakes are a reminder to our world of God’s majesty, our smallness, and judgment and are used by God for judgment (Rev. 6:12, 8:5; 11:13, 19; 16:18). Consequently, her call to repentance is appropriate, albeit that she might need help seeing the areas she may need to repent. Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? The Lord knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile. Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law. (Psalm 94:10-12, NIV) Her reference to the eclipse may seem a bit of a shot in the dark :), but the awe displays such as these evoke, similarly, points people toward God and can be used by His servants to that end. One could tell or remind people of Jesus’ death on the cross, when”(f)rom noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land” (Matt. 27:45). God used darkness on that occasion to speak of what Jesus called “the time for judgment on this world” (John 12:31) when He died on behalf of its inhabitants, suffering the punishment they deserved. Even saying, “many more things to come,” she is right. In the book of Revelation, God warned of ongoing judgments that would get poured upon an unrepentant world. Also, it wasn’t right to conflate her statement about repentance with the issue of not knowing when the end will occur because she never spoke about the end in her Tweet, only of repentance.

  • If anyone keeps repeating and repeating these are the end times (and we are there and we dont need to be obsessed with worry with it), the end will not come in our lifetimes. How many people in the past have even tried to identify the day/year itself and it has not happened. It just shows up the worry/intense fear for what it is.

  • “It’s all right to talk about “long white robes over yonder,” in all of its symbolism. But ultimately people want some suits and dresses and shoes to wear down here! It’s all right to talk about “streets flowing with milk and honey,” but God has commanded us to be concerned about the slums down here, and his children who can’t eat three square meals a day. It’s all right to talk about the new Jerusalem, but one day, God’s preacher must talk about the new New York, the new Atlanta, the new Philadelphia, the new Los Angeles, the new Memphis, Tennessee. This is what we have to do.” Martin Luther King Jr., 3 April 1968

  • Eschatological predictions are a mainstay in US religious history. It’s known the world over, but here in the States, we are particularly fond of it. One of my grievances about Far Cry 5 (the Ubisoft Far Cry series borrows from IRL places where civil unrest is likely) is that the world actually ends — by nuclear holocaust, no less — when traditionally, the world goes on just as it did in the Great Disappointment of 1844. Sometimes the apocalypse is rescheduled a time or two but eventually enough of the following gets tired of the nonsense and the movement implodes, sometimes messily. Ronald Reagan was a Second Adventist, and was pretty sure he was going to play his part in launching a retaliatory strike against the Soviet Union. (The assumption was the USSR was just evil, or was going to collapse in on itself or something, despite the whole Peaceful Coexistence thing, or Мирное сосуществование, coming from them. Reagan wanted to use his Peacekeeper ICBM). Greg Stillson, from The Dead Zone by Stephen King was inspired by Ronald Reagan, but willing to first-strike, where Reagan was not willing to take that extra step. No-one — well, rather very, very few folk — actually want a nuclear war. But it’s not actually surprising that people hope for doomsday. There’s little sense in caring for the sick, enriching the impoverished and feeding the hungry if God intends to power-wash the world in a week. Conservatism makes more sense (though still a selfish sense) when you know the Big Reset is right around the corner.

  • I already did comment this on a community post, but you should really talk about Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt, they are fundamentalist Christians who engaged in really horrific abuse towards children (including the “family vlog” YouTube website “8 Passengers” and a very cultish way of raising kids). Thankfully they are in prison and are no longer abusing them. Rachel Oates made some articles about the situation.

  • Even if MTG’s scriptural quotes had been in context… …why are the people who are the quickest to declare that current events are signs and omens that God is warning the world to recognize, repent, and turn from our sins also the slowest to recognize, repent, and turn from their sins, or to even consider that they might be among the intended recipients of such a warning?

  • While shamelessly, but effectively no less, proliferating this Critical Fear Theory and misreading all those ‘sign-of-the-times’-tea leaves, there’s this non-stop shuttling between Messiah and Apocalypse. So reverend: maybe you might spend some time here and give some attention to this psalm on the Biblical Messiah King, palm 72, especially from this 13th verse, King James Version: “13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. 14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.”

  • Unfortunately, there are enough MAGA folks who will keep voting for the likes of MTG into Congress. America is in for a troublesome future with a dysfunctional Congress going forward, unless independents and moderate republicans can swallow voting for Democrats to sweep clean Congress in the upcoming midterms.
