In Marvel’s comics, the Ten Rings are a set of powerful, magically charged jewelry that grants control over elemental forces. However, they are not magical or jewelry. The Ten Rings were discovered by the Mandarin in China’s “Valley of Spirits” and are actually the product of the dragon-like race Axonn-Karr (or Makluans) from the planet Maklu-IV. The Axonn-Karr utilized them to create the Ten Rings of Power.
In the 2021 American superhero film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the character Shang-Chi introduces a new powerful artifact into the MCU. The Ten Rings are not magical nor jewelry but rather pieces of an advanced alien spacecraft that crashed onto our planet. They are worn by a villain named Xu Wenwu, who acquires the rings during the Middle Ages, giving him absolute power and the name and symbol for his army.
In the MCU, the Ten Rings require great mental focus and level of training in a martial art style. The ten rings are made from Makluan technology, with each ring possessing a specific power. Later stories reveal that each ring houses the spirit of a dead alien. The rings are basically magical, so they can be any size fits all, be it a finger/thumb or a wrist/forearm.
The Ten Rings were discovered thousands of years ago by Xu Wenwu as a set of armbands that granted their users tremendous power. These ten cylinders were Makluan pieces of technology, each containing the soul of a long-dead legendary cosmic warrior trapped in a phantasmal state. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings depicts each ability and how they compare to the comic book abilities and history.

How powerful are the 10 rings?
The Ten Rings are a powerful weapon that grants users enhanced strength and longevity, can be fired as projectiles, emit concussive energy blasts, and can be telepathically controlled to be used as platforms for movement through the air. The strength granted by the rings is proportional to the number of rings worn at once. Xu Wenwu and Shang-Chi use the rings as propulsion to launch themselves into the air and land safely.
When thrown as projectiles, the rings can be called back to return to them. They emit a magic energy field that can be manipulated at will, and Wenwu and Shang-Chi use this energy field as a barrier, whip, or tether. The rings stop the user’s aging as long as they are worn, allowing Wenwu to live for over a thousand years while still appearing like a middle-aged man. However, they do not grant true immortality, as they cannot protect the user from fatal injuries or supernatural causes of death.
The rings have a degree of intelligence and self-awareness, and they react to beings with abilities inherited from the Great Protector. Both Ying Li and Shang-Chi can take control of the rings by using unique martial arts practiced in Ta Lo to redirect their energy. Once they obtain all ten rings at once, they demonstrate new abilities when used in conjunction with the abilities granted by the Great Protector. Shang-Chi used the rings to project an energy blast that killed the Dweller-in-Darkness with a single blow, which was detected by the Masters of the Mystic Arts all the way in Kamar-Taj.
Is Ten Rings stronger than Mjolnir?
Shang-Chi serves as a course-correct for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), fixing Iron Man 3’s fake villain twist and reducing Mandarin and the Ten Rings to a simple punchline. In the comics, the rings were alien technology created by the Makluans, an alien dragon-like species, and contained the souls and powers of legendary cosmic warriors. Mandarin became a formidable foe after acquiring the rings and training himself to unlock and master each individual power.
The current phase of the MCU has expanded its scope of the mystical and cosmic, blurring the lines between gods, galactic beings, and superhumans. The power of the Ten Rings serves as a bridge between martial arts expert Shang-Chi and his more mystically inclined counterparts. However, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings presents an opportunity for Thor and his hammer to advance in the MCU. Thor proved himself to be one of the strongest Avengers throughout the Infinity Saga, but the MCU Phase 4 has shown that there are indeed stronger beings out there. The power of the Ten Rings compared to Mjolnir is evidence of this, and the MCU needs to challenge Thor to further develop his character and unlock Mjolnir’s other big power.
Do the 10 rings make you immortal?
The rings, when thrown as projectiles, can be manipulated by the user to return to them. They emit a magic energy field that can be used as a barrier, whip, or tether. Wenwu and Shang-Chi can use the energy field to protect Wenwu from aging, but they do not grant true immortality.
The rings have intelligence and self-awareness, and they react to beings with abilities inherited from the Great Protector. Ying Li and Shang-Chi can take control of the rings by using martial arts to redirect their energy. When they battle, the rings’ energy color changes from blue to golden.
Shang-Chi initially only took five rings from Wenwu, but the other five rings willingly chose to side with him after wrestling. Once all ten rings were obtained, they demonstrated new abilities when combined with the abilities granted by the Great Protector. Shang-Chi used the rings to project an energy blast that killed the Dweller-in-Darkness with a single blow, which was detected by the Masters of the Mystic Arts.
Upon analysis by Wong, it was found that the rings started emitting a beacon to an unknown being after Shang-Chi used them to kill the Dweller-in-Darkness.

Are the Ten Rings magic or technology?
The Mandarin’s rings, created by Stan Lee and Don Heck, are the signature weapons of the supervillain Mandarin. These ten rings, made from Makluan technology, possess specific powers and house the spirit of a dead alien warrior. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Ten Rings are a set of mystical iron rings used by Xu Wenwu and his son Xu Shang-Chi, providing the namesake and emblem of Wenwu’s Ten Rings organization.
The Ten Rings were later integrated into the mainstream Marvel universe in Shang-Chi vol 2. 11 (April 2022), where they are legendary weapons originating from Ta-Lo acquired by Shang-Chi. The rings’ alien origins were revealed in Tales of Suspense 62 (Nov. 1964).
What is the secret of the Ten Rings?
Xu Wenwu, a thousand years ago, discovers the mystical ten rings, which grant godly powers, including immortality. He establishes the Ten Rings organization, conquering kingdoms and toppling governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu searches for Ta Lo, a village said to harbor mythical beasts. He falls in love with Ying Li, who leaves with him. They marry and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu abandons his organization and locks away the ten rings.
When Shang-Chi is seven years old, Li is murdered by Wenwu’s enemies, the Iron Gang. Wenwu resumes leadership, making Shang-Chi undergo brutal martial arts training but not allowing Xialing to train. Shang-Chi is sent to assassinate the Iron Gang’s leader, and he runs away to San Francisco.
In the present day, Shang-Chi works as a parking valet with his best friend Katy. They are attacked by the Ten Rings organization, who steal a pendant Li gave Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi travels to Macau to find Xialing, fearing the Ten Rings will go after her matching pendant. He reveals his past to Katy, who insists on helping him. They find Xialing at a secret fight club.
Are the Ten Rings stronger than anything in your universe?
Jiang Nan reveals that the Ten Rings are stronger than anything in the universe. Morris discovers Trevor’s still body and mourns him, while Trevor Slattery plays dead. Katy warns Trevor about a man with a machete cutting their bus, while Master Guang Bo warns him about the sins of his past. Wenwu warns him to be careful with his words, as he has lived ten lifetimes and consumed more salt than Trevor has had rice in his life.
Do the 10 rings belong to Kang?
The Multiverse is the domain of numerous Kang variants, each with distinctive physical characteristics and the potential for possessing ringed machines, which enables them to traverse the multiverse.
Can anyone control the Ten Rings?
The Ten Rings of Power, discovered by the Mandarin in China’s “Valley of Spirits”, are the product of the dragon-like Axonn-Karr race from the planet Maklu-IV. The rings were used mainly as power sources for their interstellar craft engines. The Mandarin learned to use the rings for personal use and made them respond to his commands. Over time, his mind has inhabited the rings, making them unusable and allowing him to control them over large distances. The functions of each original set of rings include freezing air and lowering an object’s temperature to near absolute zero.
Who is stronger than the Ten Rings?
The Ten Rings and Infinity Gauntlet are two powerful objects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Ten Rings have offensive and defensive abilities, including projectiles, energy blasts, and punches, as well as stopping the wearer from aging. They can also propel the wearer through the air and cushion their landings. Defensively, the rings create a forcefield around the wearer, repelling various attacks. Shang-Chi uses the Ten Rings to attack the Dweller in Darkness, revealing potential greater powers.
On the other hand, the Infinity Gauntlet is significantly more powerful, allowing the wearer to alter any aspect of the universe at will. The combined might of the Infinity Stones is almost impossible to beat, as seen in Thanos defeating the Avengers in Infinity War and Ultron massacring multiple timelines in What If. However, the Infinity Gauntlet has a notable drawback in the power required to wield it.
While powerful beings like Thanos and Ultron can control its full power, the Gauntlet can cripple even the Hulk and kill Iron Man when used. Despite this setback, the completed Infinity Gauntlet remains far more powerful than Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings.
Why did the rings turn yellow in Shang-Chi?
The Ten Rings responded to Shang-Chi by switching allegiance and sending a signal, possibly due to Shang-Chi’s character journey in the film. The power of the Ten Rings turned yellow and orange when worn by Shang-Chi, symbolizing power, royalty, and prosperity. Many creatures in Ta Lo are associated with the rise of a benevolent ruler, suggesting that the Ten Rings recognized Shang-Chi’s potential as a ruler or destined for greatness. The question remains whether Shang-Chi’s Great Protector is a Makluan, given the MCU’s introduction of two dragon-like creatures.
One theory suggests that the beacon is connected to Kang the Conqueror, who has been reinforced throughout the MCU as the next Thanos-level threat. Kang was a human named Nathaniel Richards, a scientist from 31st-century Earth. Theories persist that both the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel’s Quantum Bands are somehow connected to Kang.
📹 TEN RINGS MYSTERY FINALLY SOLVED
About New Rockstars: Hey everyone, welcome to the official New Rockstars YouTube channel! We got you covered with our …
Love everything about this movie! Good origin story, great cast and awesome action scenes. Simu, Meng’er, Awkwafina, and Tony definitely nailed the role. I also love what writers and director did with the power of the ten rings but I do suspect it may have been invented by Phastos (Eternals) since the rings are so advanced and also very ancient at the same time. Eternals came to Earth 5000 yrs ago while Xu Wenwu found the ten rings 1000 yrs ago (Sersi and Phastos made lots of ancient & advanced weapon artifacts in Eternals movie) OR the rings could be from another universe that may be connected to Kang variant. Hopefully marvel studios will add more asian actors for the sequel and make the Shang-Chi family bigger.
As a long time MCU fan, this movie added a whole new level, the same way doctor strange did. It might just be my favorite installment to date. The trailers don’t do it justice!! The callbacks and cameos, the original cast, the story and the way it’s all weaved together so intricately and naturally. 10/10 recommend and I can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for Shang-Chi!
i saw it friday and i’m still hyping over it. that’s how good it was. there was absolutely nothing that i disliked. everything about it was meaningful, and they executed the whole thing so incredibly. the characters. the fight scenes, the cinematography, all absolutely AMAZING. for those who haven’t watched it, GO WATCH IT!
Sometimes, I come back here to remind myself that whether I like it or not, I am my mother as well as my father. I’ve been integrating with my shadow self. I learned I was more than I thought. I wanted to be a hero but, when you finally look in the mirror and remember parts of your past, you realize you were a villain. I don’t expect or deserve anything good anymore. I connected more with Shang Chi, Green Arrow, The Joker and Batman than I did regular people. That makes me feel more alone. I wish there were others like me. I wish I could learn more about my abilities. I wish I was capable of being a hero. I wish I could meet my real father. Honestly, I may breathe my last in a few weeks. There’s a lot I regret and wish I would have done. At least I lived a life I’ll remember. It’s better to let someone else be a hero.
I am not someone who usually enjoys action movies … BUT MY GOD THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! Just watched it today, and it completely exceeded all the expectations that I had. The casting, the story, the fight scenes, I LOVED EVERYTHING!! No stereotypes, Chinese and Chinese-American culture was portrayed so well and respectfully. L O V E D I T
Looks AMAZING. Hopefully Hong Kong’s superstar Tony Leung will finally get the international recognition that he deserves. He is unquestionably not just Hong Kong, but one of Asia’s best actors, but is unfortunately little known outside of Asia. (He won the Best Actor Award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.) Hopefully, this movie will change that.
Saw it last night. Guys, this may be the best MCU origin story. No doubt. And that is coming from a huge First Avenger fan! That was previously my favorite. But this is such a great movie! So much action, amazing visuals, and several moments where I just completely geeked out! Lots of heart and emotion. Loved it! See it in a theater on the biggest screen possible!
Honestly, while this IS a Marvel movie, these trailers really didn’t make me feel like it was. But Abomination showing up and presumably Wong, made it feel like not just an actual Marvel movie, but it’s very reminiscient of a comic book. Like when Blackheart appeared in that one Spider-Man comic back in 2017(If I remember correctly), and The Rhino in one Black Panther comic.
I went to see this movie with a lot of skepticism but I was pleasantly surprised how good the movie actually was. It has everything that should be in an origin story. Background, discovery of hero’s self, family drama, great action sequences and of course marvel like CGI towards the end with some great action. What this movie got right for me though, regardless of its hero being a male, the portrayal of strong female leads, four of them to be exact. This is exactly how strong female characters should be depicted in movies. Their character story and development was woven into the overall story well and not just one “look at us female heroes” scene. Shang-Chi’s mom, sister, aunt, and friend/girlfriend have all great stories and powerful characters. Well done!!!
Gotta admit that Tony Leung has a stronger main character vibe, he is too eye catching to be a side character. Btw, if you wonder what the letters in the 10 rings are saying: From left to right, top to bottom: 威力 – mighty 強壯 – strong 雄偉 – magnificent 宏傑 – grand 權勢 – power Written in ancient Chinese seal script and in this pattern: 權 威 力 強 壯 雄 偉 宏 傑 勢
