Magic Ears is a new online English learning platform that began in 2017 with a strong push to recruit teachers. The platform does not require a minimum number of classes to teach each month, but teachers can plot slots when they are available. To be considered as a Magic Ears teacher, applicants must speak English at an idiomatic level, have a bachelor’s degree in any subject or be in active pursuit of a bachelor’s degree, and have a 120-hour ESL certification.
Magic Ears has no minimum requirements for teaching hours outside of the 6-month commitment. Payments are finalized on the 10th of each month through PayPal or other payment methods. Applicants must either have a completed or in progress bachelor’s degree to apply. A TESOL/TEFL certificate is not required to apply or interview, but one must be obtained.
Magic Ears is currently hiring native speakers with some teaching experience, no degree required, although a TESOL Certificate is preferred. However, recent updates now require applicants to have both teaching experience and at least a bachelor’s degree. Before applying, applicants will need a bachelor’s degree (in any subject), an accredited 120-hour TESOL/TEFL certificate, a passport from the USA, and a bachelor’s degree or higher in any subject or be a student actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
Teaching experience and certificate is not required but preferred. Teachers can choose their own hours, teach English online with Magic Ears, and be enrolled in a university or a TESOL course.

I watch your article of “Why I Quit Magic Ears.” I didn’t see any place in the article where you bashed them. I was in the process of trying to get hired, so I watched. After perusal it I continue the hiring process. Unfortunately for my solo first teach only one student was assigned to the class. Needless to say Magic Ears rejected me and said I could apply again in 3-months. I tried to contact the department that failed me to see what I did wrong. I sent the person assisting me with the process an e-mail asking what I did wrong. I never heard a word from them. I have since decided to give up on them.
I was so excited to start magic ears! And then I found out my pay was docked $65 because my camera wouldn’t turn on and I had to exit and re enter the classroom 2 minutes before class (they counted this as being late and docked me $40 even after I explained the situation) then they docked me $25 because I didn’t know I was supposed to review each student after class (I was never told to do this) I woke up as early as 4 a.m sometimes on one hour of sleep (I had a newborn too) I had to get babysitting each time for each class. I wasn’t even paid until two months after I started teaching. I was eventually locked out of teaching because I reached a slide at 22 minutes that they would have preferred I reach at 24 minutes. They had never told me that I needed to reach the second to last slide at 24 minutes. I am still locked out of my account . I was eventually compensated but I felt like it wasn’t nearly enough. It barely covered the expenses I had put into getting the job in the first place (TESOL certificate, props, desk, desk chair, headset, internet)
They are just trying to create a product of excitement and energy, not learning or education. I’ve heard horror stories about how bleak and unemotional the state-run TV is in China and people are crazy for some non-political excitement on a supposed education platform. I teach 1st grade as my full-time job and you say “I don’t bring the excitement”. BTW, how many real classes have you ever taught? Whenever their dirt feedback comes my way you know what I think to myself? Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) would be fired by Magic Ears for lack of enthusiasm. If you ever think Magic Ears is being hard on you remember, they would fire Mr. Rogers for speaking in a calm voice. Do you want to teach a class of 5-6 year olds that THEY say Mr. Rogers would not be fit to teach?
Hi Tim – how are you liking Cambly? I love it! I’m very grateful for your unbiased opinions of all of these online ESL companies, with no lies. VIP kids teachers only gush about this company so they can receive a referral bonus. I’ve heard “OH WORK FOR VIP KIDS, YOU WILL MAKE $2,000 A MONTH”, YEAH RIGHT. I have heard nothing good about them. Same with Magic Ears – run away is the comment I usually hear. If companies would just let us do what we do best, which is TEACH, without the micromanaging, how wonderful would that be?
Hi Tim, congratulations on 3,000 viewers. I applied for Magic Ears. TEFL certificate – check; Bachelors – check; Canadian – check; many years of teaching experience – check, but I got an immediate, within 10 seconds, rejection at the first stage of the application process. My only conclusion is ageism..I turned 60 this year, and a computer said no. Never mind there are more companies out there.
hi! I’m a current college student (just completed my second year) and I’m looking at some remote online esl teaching/tutoring opportunities as I might be temporarily moving abroad. I was wondering if you happen to have any suggestions. I found Magic Ears as I saw they don’t require a bachelor’s degree, but I’m hesitant to apply from what I’ve heard about the company and I’m not in my last year of college yet. Ideally because I’m also in school I need something somewhat flexible as well. Thanks! 🙂
Heyyy! I had applied to magic ears before but was turned down because of having no BA degree. Now I’m in school for BA and should finish soon. I wanted to apply again but when I sign in it still shows up with the old notification of having not been accepted. Should I email the company before re-applying or just create a new email and password with the referral code I’d like to use?
They do not acknowledge, take accountability for, or attempt to solve technical glitches on their platform. I have a Master’s in Teaching English and over seven years of experience. I passed my demo and one on one training easily. The ONLY thing I was told to improve on for the trial class was my background. My trial class started, and the platform began freezing as soon as I gave my first trophy. I tried pushing restart; it did not help. I tried contacting my success manager; they did not get back to me until long after my trial class was over. When my success manager got back to me, he refused to even acknowledge there was a technical problem. I also have a computer that meets all required specifications, and my computer was plugged into the modem with an ethernet cord.
This is really great information, Amy! Thanks for sharing 🙂 A few other things to note, teaching experience IS required, and if you are in the process of obtaining a bachelors degree, you can apply with proof of enrollment. Being plugged into an Ethernet chord is not required, but strongly recommended! Hope this helps!
