Does A Sincere Christian Have To Accept Conspiracy Theories?

A conspiracy theory is an unproven idea that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot by powerful conspirators. Christians believe in more than just the appearance of reality, as stated by the apostle Paul and Jesus. People with supernatural or paranormal beliefs are more likely to endorse a conspiracy theory. A new study from Religion in Public found that Christians who consider themselves “biblical literalists” and believers who agree with Christian nationalism are more likely to be drawn to conspiracy theories.

Christian nationalists sense that the nation is under cultural threat and biblical literalism provides an alternative source of information. Since the early twentieth century, there has been a significant overlap between Christian fundamentalism and millennialism in the United States and belief in false conspiracy. The most active conspiracy theories in North America include the so-called “great replacement”.

The rise of the internet and COVID-19 has exacerbated the issue, as those seeking to seize power often use conspiracy theories to galvanize others to support their cause. There is more to belief than the simple assumption that people believe what they want to believe.

Christian psychology illuminates conspiracy rumormongering by proposing that at the core of the anxiety lies the belief in alternate “truths” offered by conspiracy theories. Many Christians are followers of the Truth, but many find themselves tempted by the alternate “truths” offered by conspiracy theories.

Conspiration theories about COVID-19 concern the origins of the coronavirus and the belief that the pandemic situation is being used by those in the Illuminati. The belief in conspiracies tends to spike during times of crisis, such as terrorist attacks.
