Does Spells You Know Not Work Against Pact Magic?

In 5e, spell slots reset on only a short rest, allowing for easy casting of magical spells. The class feature of Spellcasting (Wizard, Cleric, Paladin, Sorcerer, Druid, Ranger) and Pact Magic class features are interchangeable, with spell slots from each feature being cast at the same level.

Warlock spells can be inscribed in their Book of Shadows, with two 1st-level spells with the ritual tag from any class’s spell list. To ensure players have their patron spells, they can reduce their spells known at 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th levels by 1 and then add the two patron spells.

The main differences between Pact Magic and Pact Magic include the one size of spell slot (which increases in size at certain levels) and the spell slots recharge. Warlock slots can be used to cast wizard spells and vice versa, but spell slot recovery and other aspects are separate for each class.

Converting a normal spellcaster to Pact Magic requires that their Mystic Arcanum count against the number of spells known/prepared. Warlocks only get spell slots up to 5th, but also get Mystic Arcanum features as part of their class that allow for 6th – 9th level casting. Eldritch Smite requires it to be a warlock spell slot, so it cannot be cast unless your DM rules otherwise.

Spells appear in the book and don’t count against the number of spells known. With your Book of Shadows in hand, you can cast the chosen spells as usual.

These unspoken promises can be as binding as any contract signed by a merchant and more effective in forcing a person to keep their word.

The text describes the gameplay of a warlock, a character who is granted various abilities and skills by their patron. These abilities include light armor, weapons, tools, saving throws, wisdom, and Charisma skills.

The player starts with a light crossbow and 20 bolts, any simple weapon, a component pouch or arcane focus, a scholar’s pack or dungeoneer’s pack, and leather armor. They also have an otherworldly patron at 1st level, which grants them features at 1st, 6th, 10th, and 14th levels.

Pact Magic is a skill gained through arcane research and the magic bestowed on them by their patron. You know two cantrips of your choice from the warlock spell list, and you learn additional cantrips at higher levels. The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have and the level of those slots is. To cast one of your warlock spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot.

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your warlock spells, and you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. When you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Eldritch Invocations are fragments of forbidden knowledge that imbue you with an abiding magical ability. At 2nd level, you gain two eldritch invocations of your choice, and when you gain certain warlock levels, you gain additional invocations of your choice.

At 3rd level, your otherworldly patron bestows a gift upon you for your loyal service. You gain one of the following features of your choice:

  1. Pact of the Chain: You learn the find familiar spell and can cast it as a ritual. The spell doesn’t count against your number of spells known.

  2. Pact of the Blade: You can create a pact weapon in your empty hand, which counts as magical for overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. The pact weapon disappears if it is more than 5 feet away from you for 1 minute or more, and it can be transformed into a magic weapon by performing a special ritual while holding the weapon.

  3. Pact of the Tome: Your patron gives you a grimoire called a Book of Shadows. When you gain this feature, you can cast three cantrips from any class’s spell list while the book is on your person. If you lose your Book of Shadows, you can perform a 1-hour ceremony to receive a replacement from your patron.

Ability Score Improvement is a feature that allows players to increase one ability score of their choice by 2, or two ability scores of their choice by 1, as normal. However, an ability score above 20 cannot be increased using this feature.
