Casting spells at their lowest level without expending a spell slot is possible when prepared. If you want to cast either spell at a higher level, you must expend a spell slot as normal. By spending 8 hours in study, you can exchange one or both of the spells you chose for different spells of the same levels. The only spell restriction is on bonus action spells, which if you cast one means you can only cast cantrips on your turn. Technically, you can get off 4 spells in a single turn using haste, action surge, and your reaction.
At-will abilities, which “function like x spell”, have a casting time and are noticed as if one were casting a spell of an equivalent nature. Casting a spell takes a variable number of actions depending on the spell, as listed in each spell’s stat block. A prepared spellcaster can heighten a spell by preparing it in a higher-level slot than its normal spell level, while a spontaneous spellcaster can heighten a spell by casting it.
Metamagic is a crucial aspect of spell casting, as it counts for concentration DCs, magus spell recall, or a pearl of power at the spell level. Most spells require 1 standard action to cast, and you can cast such a spell either before or after taking a move action.
Spells can vary in how many actions they take, as shown in the spell’s stat block. Casting cantrips, spells from spell slots, and focus spells using the same process but must expend the spell when casting a spell from a spell slot and spend 1 Focus. Intelligence is for casters who have to study and practice their magic through ritual or science, such as Wizards, Witches, Magi, and Alchemists.
