A magic slushy cup is a device that uses oxygen freezing to transform any drink into a delicious slush. It works by using a special inner lining that freezes when the cup is placed in the freezer. When liquid is poured into the cup, the frozen lining rapidly chills the liquid, turning it into a slushy consistency within minutes. Two different versions of the Slushy Cup were tested to see how they worked.
Slushy Magic, also known as cup and balls magic, is a close-up magic technique that involves a small cup, a ball, and a sleight of hand. The performer appears to be performing the magic. The Slushy Cup claims to make slushies in seconds and slushify any drink. However, most people have reported that it doesn’t work because they missed out on getting it right.
A slushy cup is a thick, insulated cup that can be stored in the freezer. To use it, pour a sugary liquid into the cup and stir for a few seconds. After storing the slushie cups in the frozen layer of the refrigerator for 4-5 hours, pour the chilled beverage into the frozen magic cup. Once the chilled liquid touches the inner cup, it begins to freeze. When the cup is squeezed, the frozen pieces break up into the liquid.
The Slushy Magic is a plastic tumbler with a lid and three “magic” ice cubes. Put the cubes in the tumbler, pour in your favorite drink, put the lid on, and shake.

I think you’re the best reviewer on youtube at least my favourite as you’re thorough but fair, with your real world tests and also the annual updates to my knowledge you’re the only one who is as dedicated to that so really enjoy these articles and thanks for continuing with them under the recent difficult situation.
I’ve owned a few versions of these and they all worked great if you followed directions. The liquid should be chilled and should also be sufficiently sweetened to crystallize properly. The Zoku is kind of a really expensive version of the Slush Mug which I’ve had and the Frozen Magic is a slightly different way to get more surface area to the liquid and is a very nice way of doing it compared to the Slushy Magic I had before which was little cubes that you’d freeze and use to make slush. Over the years basically you learn to not use milk and to avoid things that may be ‘low sugar’ or ‘sugar free’. Typically I will get super good results with fridge chilled juices or sodas or even normally sweetened sports drinks. As long as the liquid is rather cold, it will not take super long to make the slush, but if it’s room temp it will take FOREVER and a lot of the chill will be taken off the cup trying to bring the temp. of the liquid down. One thing I’ve done if I want a slush and only had drinks that were sitting at room temp is chill it quickly with some ice to ensure quicker slushing.
I’ve had that zoku slush maker for a couple of years. It does work pretty well, but it does take about 5 to 7 minutes to get a fully slushed drink. But the nice thing is that it’s so cold, you can pour a second drink into it after you finish the first and make another slushy. The cup does need to freeze for a full 24 hours before you make slushies though. That might be why it didn’t work on the second day for you. I also don’t think doing it outside in 99 degree heat was a good idea.
We used to use freezer cups for ice cream floats when I was a kid. It would turn the root beer into slush… so good! These just look like fancy freezer cups. The reason the one is so much faster is surface area. Those ridges going in gave the frozen surface a much larger surface area. Probably about 2x as much. More contact with the frozen surface = faster freezing time.
I just bought a Magic cup last week before I saw your article. 😂 So we have 5 of them. Everyone has loved their cup. I make my own flavored extracts. The kids add them to carbonated water. Works great. I wanted to cut down on my soda intake so I now do 1/2 soda to 1/2 water, works fabulous. Youngest is 8 years. They are each responsible for cleaning their own cup & straw & placing back in the freezer. I don’t worry about germs so much bc the cold of the freezer is going to kill the germs. You are right about the easy to damage the Magic cup. We had a little lesson on do’s & don’ts before anyone was allowed to use. So far everyone is following all the safety rules & taking good care of their cups.
These articles always help with my anxiety. They’re so calm and laid back and your voice is soothing. I always get calmed down when I watch them. Was just having an anxiety attack and saw this on my YouTube page. Now I’m way calmer and feel far better. Thank you for being so informative, fun, and being almost therapeutic…
Well it’s like others have said, the frozen magic has a bigger surface area with those folds on the inside, and ontop of that the squeezing moves the liquid inside around. So ontop of the larger surface area, there’s also more of the liquid contacting the frozen part at a time, making it much faster to freeze
Most of these slushy gadgets work just fine with sodas, so high fructose corn syrup apparently counts as natural. I can confirm that frozen ginger-ale is amazing. The one I use is basically a hollow mug with what is likely an alcohol/water mix inside it. It has the same problem you had, and it has to do with the surface area of the freezing surface, so I add an ice-cube or 2. I stick it in the freezer over night, and the next day I wrap it in a modified koozy, and fill it with refrigerated drinks. If I use ice, I can get about 2 cans worth of slushy, but only about 1.5 without. Without the koozy, it only freezes about 90% of one can’s worth of soda.
The frozen magic works faster because with the interior shape of the cup allows more cold surface area to come in contact with the liquid accompanied by the fact you are constantly breaking the ice particles loose and pushing it back into the liquid and catalyzing the rest of the beverage dropping the temp. more quickly than just waiting for the ice to form and scrape it off.
you can use diet soda or flaring or any other kinds of liquids for the frozen magic, but the ZOKU cup you can only use sugar liquids. I got the ZOKU cup for my birthday this year and it didn’t work. So than I ordered the Frozen Magic cup and it worked great. But that was before I knew about the sugar thing for the ZOKU Cup. – A Slushie Lover
Dude, “scraping a windshield in the winter”? You’re from Florida, you live in Vegas. . .puh-leeze. Also there was a similar product 30 years ago that had a handle on the protective cup to further insulate from user. In my attempt to hasten stuff. . .i ditched the protective cup and ended up with a thermal burn on a finger that stuck to the cup. They’re bothOK.. a frozen coke is a frozen coke. . .get the smooth sided cup every time.
I hate warm beer, so I bought a generic cup like the one you used last, from the supermarket about 20 years ago. It was THE best way ever to drink beer. I didn’t choose to scrape, but instead would just let that ice build up and I would just pour more beer from the bottle into the cup everytime I drank the beer. I don’t mean I was a lush and drank like a fish, but the amount of liquidy enough beer to drink was a small amount in the thin inner well.
I wouldn’t choose either one of them, I use to have one that had plastic cubes you froze then you put it in a leak proof cup and shake it. The way it works for all of them is that there is salt in the water you freeze taking it below freezing which then freezes the liquid on the surface area. It only makes sense the more surface area you get on the faster it turns to slush. This is why I prefer the plastic cube method
the green one is faster ’cause it has more surface on the inside in contact with the soda, wich translate in a faster freezing action . The downside is, as you said, that with all those folds and wrinkles it is a nightmare get all the soda out . sorry for my english, but other than me been italian i also have to fight my italian auto correct on the phone 😀
Best you freeze it over night then add your juice or soda I put it back in the freezer for 10 min. Then stir it if still not slushy enough put it back in freezer again for a little longer and stir again. I have one with the outer and inner cups. I also had one when I was a kid it was a different brand.
James, what about the quality of the freeze? These are basically the same idea as countertop ice cream makers. So comparing to that, if you make the fastest ice cream that you can, with liquid nitrogen and it freezes basically instantly, you have very small ice crystals and a very smooth ice cream, but then a 20 minute freeze in a low power ice cream maker, you have bigger crystals and a rougher mouth feel. so how do they compare one to the other in term of how they made the frozen treat?
The green one isn’t a straight cylinder, so it has more surface area. Also, the constant agitation causes more of the fluid to be effected by the cold sides of the cup at once while the passive nature of the other one only freezes the outer most portion of the liquid. It’s why you almost got an ice ring on the cola.
I love your shows, but, it would be SO much better if you could state their prices!!!!!!! Yah, I know it changes and I could look it up, etc. etc, etc,—but isn’t that why I watch YOU?!!! Seriously, love you, your show and your excellent dog, but PRICE MATTERS!!!!! Thank you for listening to a big fan from “over the hump” in Pahrump, NV!!!!!!!💖💖👍👍🎈🎈🥰🥰
I’m seeing alot of people saying it might be because the green one has more surface area, and therefore it had quicker results. I’m not sure how this would affect anything, but one thing i’v noticed is that you used a carbonated drink for your test. Now I’m only gonna quote what i can recall from my chemistry class in high school, but basically, in a nutshell, the carbon in your drink will make it so it will take longer for your drink to freeze up, UNLESS you release some of that carbon. The green cup whole gimmick IS to shake your drink, so you release more of that carbon, there’s less carbon in your drink to slow down that freezing process, therefore your drink freezes faster. Try it yourself! Get yourself a flat cola and a fresh cola, both the same temperature, and freeze them up. see which one will be the first to form ice! I haven’t actually tried it because I am lazy, so I might be wrong. (Hope my memory don’t fail me!)
The Frozen Magic will take less time because it has more surface area to put next to the drink you put into it. I have had both styles and I hated the soft squeeze one as I could not get much of my drink because it was stuck in the folds! I am definitely for the the other one as it is more like the ones you get in the store. My wish is that they make them bigger!!! I used to fill my old one back in the 70’s twice and it worked! Thank you for doing your reviews I have actually followed through on one item you recommended 🙂 (that was a phone holder for the car!) Cheers, From Joanne, an American living in New Zealand 🙂
I don’t think ya timed the first set as it would have probably done similar to the second test. The wait and scrape slushie maker has to cool the whole drink before it starts to work which is why it takes longer but the other one you are mixing the drink which i think is moving the cold through out the cola and thus chilling it faster. Also you can fix the cold hand problem by using a sleeve on it and I think there are a lot of people who have pipe clearners around or even bottle cleaners.
At least it’s dry heat in Wisconsin you’re lucky to get below %80 humidity in the summer which makes everything stick to you’re skin so in the summer if you have 80 degree weather your sweat goes no where I mean unless you constantly dry yourself off I mean no wonder why we have vitamin D deficiency when it’s too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter
Isn’t that warm lol. Must be very dry heat then because in the south 99° with 95%+ humidity, humidity is always super high down here, is almost unbearable. I’ve never experienced dry heat as I’ve never been to the Western states(Kansas is the furthest west I’ve been) but I know sticky humid heat very well. I had a friend in school who had moved from Phoenix to here who said 85° here felt way hotter than 110°+ there which just sounded crazy to me. And when it does get 100°-105° here they treat it like an emergency advising ppl to stay indoors as much as possible lol.
I had those when I was a kid. I loved them. 🙂 The ones I had were like much older version of the Slush and Shake Maker. Had a cup that went in the freezer, and a plastic outside with a handle (we had one red and one yellow). And yeah, I kept trying diet drinks in it and they absolutely will not work. Good memories. 🙂
The Zoku is so annoying when my daughter is eating slushies out of it, the sides always freeze over super hard and I have to scrape that mf and I HATE the scraping noise. #sendhelp *Also we’ve had both, the magic isn’t durable at all. I actually punctured the edges with a knife one time trying to get ice out for my daughter who let it sit too long. I didn’t realize until AFTER I washed it that there was a hole and the liquid inside LEAKED OUT! Luckily by the time I got it unfrozen she changed her mind and I ended up dumping it. But that could have been AWFUL!!! Also, it’s hard af to clean, is annoying to put together and take apart, and doesn’t stay cold anywhere near as long. Also it’s super hard to get all the drink out, it’s cold as balls (the outer cup on the scrape one is so much better)… That said, I prefer the squeeze one simply because it doesn’t create an ice wall the wildlings couldn’t break tf through. The scrape one is better if you’re going to eat it and be done, but if your kid takes 30 minutes to eat a slushy be prepared to frustratingly scrape some walls.
10:38 I HOPE YOU READ THIS COMMENT it is freezing the cola at slower speed because it has less surface area than the green cup. the green cup has those ridges inside which increases the surface area and cools the liquid down faster…… however the blue cup will keep shushing for longer because it isn’t gaining heat as fast as the green one, the green cup will slush quickly and than stop shushing soon. in conclusion = = if you are impatient buy the green one if you have patience buy the blue one
I think the reason the Frozen magic works so much faster is because it has those crevices in the sides. That’s allowing more of the liquid to be touching and be surrounded by the cold and that would help make things chill a lot faster. I think if there was an easy way to transfer stuff out of that cup and into a different cup that would be a clear winner in my eyes. The whole struggle to clean it is the only real issue. I guess the simplest solution to clean it would be to put some soap and warm water in there and just shaken vigorously and rinse thoroughly, then set it upside down on a drying rack and hope that it dries out completely. As far as the straw spoon goes, I would just ditch that thing and go with a regular spoon. If you were getting something like this for kids, the second one will be too slow and kids wouldn’t have the patience for it. They would give up on that so quickly and it would just end up remelting again and they’d have a regular drink haha. As far as your question goes, on the east coast of Canada we typically call it pop instead of soda.
Wouldn’t literally any frozen mug do the exact same thing? All you’re doing is slowly freezing little bits of liquid, moving it around so that it doesn’t freeze solid, and freezing new liquid. I’m from Illinois and in the middle we call it pop, in the south we call it soda, and in the north it’s soda pop. I’m from the middle so it’s pop to me.
I mean knowing some things about computers has taught me one thing that I really assumed everyone already knew… it’s quite simple really why 1 cup is faster: Surface area surface area surface area. Seriously though it actually is that simple. There’s quite obviously way more surface area on the other cup for heat to transfer to the cup from the liquid.
The difference in time-to-freeze is due to agitation and surface area. With the first one you’re constantly exchanging the fluid that’s against the cold wall, while the other needs to rely on convection currents & occasional stirring. The “ribbed for his pleasure” design of the first one also helps with surface area, as well as the tight squeezing…
The Frozen Magic’s system certainly outperformed the Slush & Shake but delivered faster results at the expense of convenience and usability. Though it had a much longer execution time, the Slush & Shake delivered a more quality end product at the expense of time and environmental factors. This proves that good design demands good compromise.
Zoku works like the one i had in the 60s, thats 1960s, when i was in grade school dont remember the brand name, but it worked well with pepsi or coke or cool aid, and use COLD drinks; it works best never tried milk, yuck and come to think of it, we only had cows milk; slushies come from 7/11, which is an old store.
The reason the Coke took longer to freeze was the carbonation— the Zoku cup’s smooth inner surface was having to compete with the air bubbles that wouldn’t let the liquid molecules adhere to the frozen walls— as well as trying to chill that warm soda. The irregular surface of the other cup didn’t have that issue (plus squeezing ensured you broke up the carbon dioxide bubbles). It’s science.
Did anyone else do that thing in science class where you put a ziplock bag full of juice inside a larger ziplock of ice and salt? This is that. Only the ziplocks are much, much cheaper… I think one difference is that the 2 Liter wasn’t cold, while the soy milk from your fridge was. That leveled the playing field for the blue one with less surface area. Being outside might not have been the issue at all.
1:52 I get such a kick out of reading Chinese instructions, sometimes. Many times it really ticks me off that they are so unclear, especially when you REALLY need to know, what you NEED to know about the product. That last sentance explains why I try as much as possible to avoid purchasing Chinese products, but it doesn’t work out that way all the time… just gotta live with it I guess.
One has way more surface area with all the crevices. I have the slushy wizard and it takes about 10 min. When you scrape the sides more often it gets a finer slush. But if you leave it too long it freezes solid. I bought a 2 pack at state fair for 15 bucks I love it. And you deff can make an alcoholic slush it works better because the alcoholic doesn’t allow it to freeze sold if you leave it. Great reviews tho, strangely satisfying to watch lol
Frozen magic cup has more surface area because of the shape of the insides, opposed to the slush and shake which is just a circle. More surface area will freeze more liquid faster. I personally would opt for the slush and shake….looks easier to clean, and not like eating out of a rubber sock! Yuck!! 🤣
I live in tropical Queensland in Australia and I have purchased both of these in the past. The first one you’re about to look at I found was very difficult to keep clean and quite often difficult to sit on a bench or other flat surface. In fact the cup develop mould very quickly even though I sterilised with baby bottle sterilising solution. All in all it was actually quite a terrible one to use because the hand that you were squeezing would get quite cold and even painful. The 2nd cup that you look at was better however it would’ve been improved if they had made it big enough to fit a regular can of soft drink inside the cup. By doing that people could’ve used the cup as a container to keep a can of soft drink cold – or to chill the can down. As a slushy maker it was just too awkward and heavy and Inconvenient for daily use. I did find it interesting to use as a desert maker by adding home made flavoured custard instead of a drink to the cup. This flavoured custard or Greek yoghurt was flavoured with finely chopped or Pureed fruit and was quite nice. This is one one way to make healthier deserts.
Bubba please hire me as your science advisor. You didn’t factor in the STARTING temperature of the liquid before placing in the devices. The unit with the folds has a faster temperature transfer coefficient. The other part of the differential equation is the initial difference in temp between the liquid and the frozen walls.
1. The reason the Frozen Magic works faster is two fold: first, it has more surface area that comes in contact with the liquid; second, you’re constantly agitating the liquid, keeping unfrozen parts coming into contact with the cold liner. 2. The reason that unsweetened or artificially sweetened liquids do not work is because dissolved sugars prevent large ice crystals from forming. This is what gives slushies and milkshakes their uniform smoothness and consistency. Unsweetened or artificially sweetened beverages will not freeze uniformly – ultimately they will freeze, but it would be much more similar to shaved ice. More liquid will evaporate, and without near-constant agitation it will form large chunks of ice and eventually into an ice block.
on amazon reviews dont matter anymore. People are copying and pasting reviews on other similar products even when they have different features. I’ve caught several of these looking for lady shavers or even reading lamps. So I’m sure a lot of manufacturers are paying for reviews from farms or something and they’re just copying text to another account.
Random hypothesis: since you were outside and it was 99 out, it took longer for ice crystals to start forming on the Zoku and if you were stirring it every minute you were breaking the crystals off the walls causing the process to restart. Idk someone smarter than me can tell me what’s actually happening but that’s just my guess
The Frozen Magic has more internal surface area because of the folds as well as a thinner material allowing more cold transfer. Coupled with the fact that you are squeezing the cup which is constantly subjecting more worm liquid to the cold surface. If you consider the time you spend cleaning the Frozen Magic as part of the process the Slush And Shake Maker is a clear winner.
My guess is that the coke and cranberry juice were room temperature and the chocolate milk was already cold when poured in. Since the folds in the cup and squeezing allowed more surface contact to occur more quickly it chilled the liquid faster. The other one takes longer to chill the liquid before it begins freezing it since it’s not moving. If you used chilled drinks, I’m sure it would freeze the liquid faster.
Hi, i think the green cup has much faster heat transfer (due to higher surface area on the inside), I believe that’s why the green one (frozen magic) worked so much faster. Also I am thinking for the COLA test you did outside – was the coke cooled in the fridge beforehand? having it start from room temperature would make the time difference even more apparent! great article though
I got a 2 pack of the Zoku ones at Costco a while back (never saw them again). I kinda love them. They do take a little bit of time to “slush” but in real life situations I’m rarely just staring at it, so the wait doesn’t seem too bad. The consistency of the drink that you get from it though is great. I can’t speak for the other one but it did seem like it’d be not only a hassle to clean but also a hassle to get the last of your drink from all the nooks and crannies. Just my 2 cents though, love all these reviews.
So Magic slushy is for kids, and the Zoku is for adults. Magic has folds for speed, is something they can take outside to keep them warm as they squeeze it, also outside spills aren’t so bad. The Zoku is fur adults, you can start yours then move onto the kids help them get them out side then come back to an almost ready to start slushy for yourself.
The frozen magic is quicker because you’re constantly moving the liquid around causing it to cool all through out while the other one basically is fighting the warmer liquid in the center with the cooler liquid against the walls..if you stir the other one constantly it would be nearly as quick as the frozen magic
It’s the agitation that’s helping one of them as you’re constantly squeezing it and that moves the liquid around helping it cool faster. It’s the same way for drinks in the fridge as if you gently agitate it every five minutes or so, it’ll get cold within an hour or so while the other one might take two to three hours. Oh, I call every soft drinks Coke.
Frozen magic has a lot more surface area due to all of the folds increases inside. This allows for more of the thermal energy to be drawn out from the liquid. All of the agitation caused by you squeezing the cup circulates the liquid over that extra surface area. This equals a faster frozen drink at the cost of convenience.
Surface area is the difference. The cracks and crevices add more surface area for heat transfer, so it can freeze faster. Since it freezes faster, you need the constant squeezing to keep it from getting too much ice on the sides, and that constant agitation keeps cycling more liquid onto the cold sides, which also makes it faster. All your pros and cons apply, but that’s the reason for the speed difference.
