A pool skimmer is a crucial component of the pool’s filtration system, collecting debris as water is sucked through it for cleaning and re-circulation. It is typically a small white rectangle built inside the edge of an inground pool, designed to maximize efficiency and performance. The skimmer can also be used as a net to skim the pool.
A manual pool skimmer works by skimming water and debris manually, requiring the user to move a mesh net across the pool. An automatic skimmer produces suction to pull pool water, making it an indispensable element in keeping pool water clean and healthy. Floating pool skimmers continuously remove debris from the water surface, enhancing the pool’s appearance and the swimming experience. Regular debris removal prevents organic matter from decomposing in the pool.
A swimming pool skimmer is a device designed to remove debris, junk, and algae from your pool BEFORE it floats to the bottom, making it easier to clean your pool. The operation of a pool skimmer involves pump suction pulling water through the skimmer, which carries floating leaves, bugs, etc. into the skimmer where they are removed.
The Pentair Sta-Rite Concrete In Ground Pool Skimmer with Float and Check Valve, 2in Slip, is a popular choice for pools, patios, lawns, and gardens. It features double pipe ports for connection to the main drain or equalizer line, a removable float valve for vacuuming, and two holes for the pump and main drain. To return to normal skimming operation, turn the pump off 10-15 seconds, allowing the skimmer to fill and the float valve to return to open position.

📹 Explanation of Skimmer and Main Drain
A brief video to explain the filtration system of your pool.
Thank you for posting this. Our skimmer wasn’t working properly since it was installed a few months ago. The door always floated too high to allow water to come in. I checked the main drain/skimmer control and found that no water was being pumped out of the skimmer which is why the door always floated above the water line. I set the valve to pump some water through the skimmer and it now works perfectly!
Quick question. Just bought a home with an inground pool, if I have the MD off, you can see water flow into the pump from the skimmer. When I move the switch into the opposite direction (so off is facing the skimmer) zero water flows into the pump. Does this mean for whatever reason, the previous owner has the bottom drain blocked?
I had a question for you, I have a 30 by 30 above ground pool holds 22000 gallons of water gun stores put a main drain in the air with a hose Going Underground and coming up they put a ball valve before this skimmer, I have a DE filter it’s a Hayward ec50 when I have to vacuum I shut the ball valve off which doesn’t allow the drain order to come up did they install the ball valve Right ? I have a plug on the bottom of my tank which I let the de out
