How To Avoid Having Fits Of Coughing?

To stop coughing, try relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation to gain control of your breathing and strengthen your immune system. Uncontrollable coughing fits may indicate underlying problems such as chronic respiratory disease and infectious diseases. Natural, easy-to-follow breathing techniques and breath control exercises can help calm these pesky coughing spells. Drinking plenty of fluid, inhaling steam, and sucking on cough drops can help alleviate a coughing fit. If your cough lasts longer than 10-14 days, see a healthcare provider.

Over-the-counter (OTC) cough remedies can deal with coughing in several ways: cough suppressants lessen the urge to cough, while expectorants thin mucus and make it easier to cough up. In the meantime, you can treat a chronic cough with over-the-counter remedies like cough drops and cough suppressants or home remedies like steam and honey.

To stop coughing at night, at-home remedies include drinking warm liquids before bed, using a cool-mist humidifier or taking a cough suppressant. Drinking plenty of fluids or using a cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can soothe an irritated throat and loosen mucus. Honey can also help.

To get rid of a cough fast, consider an OTC cough expectorant, try a cough suppressant, hydrate with plenty of fluids, and use a humidifier to dry out your throat and airways. Breathe warm mist, such as with a shower running in a closed bathroom, and give warm clear fluids to drink. A simple remedy that is very effective for coughing is a nighttime herbal tea with honey and lemon.

Cough suppressants like Benylin, Mucinex, or Robitussin should be used cautiously, not suppressing productive coughs too much. Coughing is essential for preventing bacterial infections and is beneficial for people with asthma and lung diseases. If an over-the-counter cough suppressant doesn’t work, consult a doctor for alternative options. Cough medicines can cause problems for those with other health issues, such as asthma, heart failure, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or an enlarged prostate.

They may also interact with other medicines, such as sedatives and certain antidepressants. Labels should be read carefully to understand ingredients, as some cough medicines contain alcohol or codeine. Consult a pharmacist for advice on cough medicines. Use them with caution for those over 60 or with chronic breathing problems. Keep them out of children’s reach to prevent poisoning. Avoid taking someone else’s prescription cough medicine and monitor usage to avoid potential problems.

  • I had COVID in 2019 and I’m still coughing 4 years later. It’s mostly a dry cough but I think I have some post nasal dripping. I saw my doctor and he didn’t send me to a lung doctor. I’m unemployed so I can’t afford out of pocket doctor expenses. Do I just have long COVID or could I have something serious? I’m able to run at a sprit just fine and do 50+ miles of running each week with most of it at under 11 min/ mi pace on hilly terrain. Any suggestions on what might be my issue, please? I’ll give these remedies a try, too. Thanks.

  • Sorry I want to ask you a question I don’t know if it’s against your rules so here it goes. Two nights ago, when I went to sleep, my throat started drying up, and my nose got all stuffed. Later, it turned into a sore throat, making it hard to sleep well. Then came the dizziness, headache, and a lot of coughing. Today, I’ve got coughing, a runny nose, and slightly watery eyes. Minus today’s update, I reckon I’ve caught the flu or a nasty cold. I checked my temperature, and it reads 36.7°C.
