Not to this extent, but I did do AOE farming like this on Paladin in 2007. Not just tanks but giving anyone the power to sustain themselves and DPS at the same time results in this. Necromancers in Guild Wars 2 had abilities that allowed them to mass DoT while also making those DoTs heal them. It was weak on single targets, but you get like 5+ mobs on you and you were practically immortal.
I just started out in Dragonflight and was a bit careless with my newly acquired dragon mount, got jumped by far too many mobs, tried to run away but would just pull more mobs so had to stand and fight. My DK tank dealt with about 10 mobs like it was nothing in pretty much starter gear, I just couldn´t kill as fast as in the article.

My Devastation Evoker is at level 69 (giggity) and I enjoy it for PvP, but I’m very tempted to go back to DH for PvE content because of how busted tanks are and how busted Havoc is. That and soloing content is just much smoother as DH as you literally just pull everything together and burn it down while healing with leech versus Evoker where you panic once a few mobs hit you. And yes I know this is a warrior PoV but I’m sure Vengeance can do the same.
I didn’t see this article last year when it came out. If I had, I would have let you know that it’s not warrior being OP that let’s him pull a bunch and kill them. If you have end game best gear and highest possible ilvl cap and then go to a zone that has trash mobs that don’t compare to where you are in progression and cap status then you can pull as much as you want and scorch them. You would be able to do that with any class in WOW. It would be like me going to a level 50 dungeon when I’m level 70 and soloing the entire dungeon on heroic or mythic and one or two shotting the dungeon bosses – it would only mean I’m doing a part of the game that isn’t up to my level in the game.

I’ve been pretty convinced that for a really long time, essentially shortly since when mass auto loot has been in the game, that they nerfed what the mobs actually drop in game. I never went out of my way to test this, nor have I played much of shadowlands /DF, but I noticed that I generally got more loot from single target looting in BFA And legion. If anyone is bored and Is willing to test this, I’d love to know if true. Run like a couple RFCs or something, single looting as opposed to group looting and share the results. What I generally noticed is that cloth and gold was equal, but your other items were considerably lowered, but that also could’ve been a placebo. Bosses still drop their loot tables in dungeons. Would love to know the true answer though
this combat is less impactful than fucking warriors games – I don’t find it fun when I can’t correlate my success to my efforts. something impactful would be, if I don’t do X, then Y has changed my situation. for example the choregraphed attacks that deal a lot of damage – if you stand in it, you’re suddenly in a different situation where you might not survive unless you adapt. any game where you can take on more than 5 entities at a time with ease is not impactful (the exception would be if you’re character is overleveled to a point). this is almost worse than mobile auto games or cookie clickers
Its sad that Blizzards response to this is “nerf Tank sustain” so healers have something to do. Meanwhile over on FF14…they develop encounters where Healers are expected to DPS, and Tanks are expected to help sustain themselves. Tale of two cities.
