The author has recently played on their hunter alt and is curious about the possibility of using ranks in a macro. They have tried setting up one like this: /cast (modifier:ctrl) Mend Pet (Rank 1); Mend Pet (Rank 3)
To add an ability to the macro, you can open your ability/spell book and shift-click an ability to add it. The syntax goes at the end of the ability as (Rank 5) or whatever. For offensive spells, this will always be the highest rank.
The World of Warcraft guide covers the basics of macros, how to access macro functions, and how to start creating your own macros. When you want to cast a spell in a macro, you start the line with /cast, followed by the name of the spell that you want to cast. This allows you to always cast the highest level of your spell, making upgrading new spells painless.
For lower rank spells, you can use the mouseover macro for healing spells by Shift+clicking a spell in the spell book when the macro pane is open. You can add the spell rank like Spell (rank 4) if applicable. You can also opt to view all ranks of your spells in the spellbook and shift-click the rank you want to see the exact syntax to make it work.
In summary, the author suggests that using ranks in macros can be useful for hunting and leveling. By following these steps, players can create more efficient and effective macros in their game.

Do I need to include the spell rank in the macro? No. All kidding aside, you don’t need to include the spell rank in macros. It will always default to the highest rank of the spell. It’s really easy to test this, just try with /cast Aspect of the Hawk, you can check your buffs and see that it uses the highest rank. It’s actually the reason I replace every spell on my bars with a macro, even if it’s just something like /cast Distracting Shot, because it means I don’t have to replace it on my bars every time (and maybe because I always forget).
