How To Connect The Mixer And Focusrite?

This video demonstrates how to connect an audio mixer to the Focusrite Scarlett Solo Audio Interface for recording or live streaming. The video covers the process of connecting an audio mixer to the Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface, which allows mixing different sound sources and recording audio. Focusrite Control 2 features Mixer (4i4 4th Gen) or Direct (Solo and 2i2 4th Gen) view, allowing users to control the mix being sent to outputs.

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo has a single line-level input that allows sending a mono version of a mixer’s stereo output to the computer. To record a stereo mix, the mixer needs to be connected to a mixer using the INST switch to OFF. The 2i4 is a great tool for laptop DJs with its two phono outputs and the ability to switch the headphone feed source between outputs.

To connect an audio mixer to the Scarlett Solo audio interface for recording and live streaming, connect the available line-level outputs on the audio interface to the available line-level inputs on the mixer. The single 1/8″ jack will plug into the headphone output of the device, while the two ¼” jacks will connect to any pair of Line Inputs on your mixer.

In summary, the video provides a step-by-step guide on how to connect an audio mixer to the Focusrite Scarlett Solo Audio Interface for recording or live streaming. It also covers setting up the DAW and accessories for the Scarlett 2i2 Studio Pack.

  • Thank you for sharing the tutorial. Due the mic of my Yamaha F4 mixer which is no preamp function, there’s no signal, no sound detected from website 1 for dynamic microphone on the mixer. Therefore, I want to do it as your article tutorial from Audio interface(Yamaha Steinburg UR22C)connect to Yamaha F4 Mixer The procedure is as below: 1. plug in microphone on mixer 2. quarter-inch cables plug those into the quarter inch inputs from audio interface(UR22C), and plug those into the mixer output should be labled as main mix output If so, the microphone of mixer will be workable, and all the website of the mixer can be adjusted and controlled. Is that right?

  • great article i have a question i have a focusrite 3 gn i use logic pro. Can I go live with my band, I’m a drummer. The mixer is Soundcraft ui16, now I don’t understand how to connect to ui16? what cables should i have? and do they need to be plugged into the soundcard MAIN OUT 1/2 or ALT OUT to go live.. i don’t know if i explained well.. we are newbies in this stuff 🙂 thanks a lot for the answer. your articles are Cool!!!!

  • Maybe you can help me, so i have a korg1200 and the preamp is amazing, they have a technology called REMS that can emulate a mic into almost anything older mic for vintage etc so i record all my vocals in there its a 12 track recorder, but seeing that its so old it doesnt really communicate well with a computer, it just transfer files, when i plug my mic into the interface which is a presonus, it sounds sooo bass heavy and muffled, so i spend hours mixings is there a way i can do what im doing with my korg, get that warm tone with with the pc,

  • well and clearly explained only what should you do if your audio interface only has a mic/line 1 input and inst 2 (for instruments) e.g. the u-phoria umc 22 then it is not possible to do left and right when i use a orchestra wants to record with all their equipment at the mixer (without usb) with audio interface is there a solution for that?

  • Thank you for the excellent explanation, could you please advise if it’s possible to plug the Scarlett Audio Interface into Behringer PPA2000BT portable PA system? I am buying the PA system and would like to have an audio interface as well for recording, I am asking because I don’t see Main Outs on PPA2000BT mixer. Appreciate your quick response.

  • Question- I see you have usb on your mixer. What is the advantage of using the Scarlett as an extra step into the computer? Could you just Mixe the band on the mixer and via usb go right to the daw? I ask because I too have both and can’t understand why I’d use them together yet. Please enlighten me and thanks for the vid!

  • Really appreciate the info. I think I’m not understanding perfectly so: if I’m using focusright scarlet to record with a daw, do I need a mixer? What if I’m recording two vocals and a guitar and a piano? Would the 4i4 be able to take all these 4 signals in or would I need a mixer in this scenario? Finally, if I’d like to have more than 2 signals, what’s the best bang for my buck? A larger focusright or scarlet 2i2 with a mixer? Thank you in advance!

  • Hi there I have a new Pyle 6ch. mixer I’m going from my radio into the (send) jack on the mixer audio sounds fine in the studio but people say it real low when broadcasting. Send knob is set at 9oclock gained & levels at 12 o’clock FX levels 8 o’clock. I’m thinking I have this hooked up wrong & should not be going into send jack but output jack instead. What do you think? Thanks

  • Is it possible to use the 2i2 connected to my Gemini 12 mixer with 3 mics and be able to record from the 3 mics at the same time? I’m currently having the issue of only being able to get 1 external mic on the software and I was told a Scarlett would fix that. I’m just wonder if the 2i2 will work for 3 mics recording at the same time

  • …… I LOVE YOU MAN! …. I have been searching EVERYWHERE on how to get my analog mixer into my Samsung Note 10 plus. EVERYTHING I have tried beforehand has failed. Ive even tried the Samsung OTG dongle trick. Didn’t work. I know your article was about mixer➡️ 2i2 ➡️ computer, But I tried it anyway. This is the only thing that has worked! I just tried it with Samsung voice memo… works perfectly! Facebook live… works perfectly! Samsung stock article app…works perfectly! Haven’t tried YouTube YET, but I’m sure it will be the same. I just used it for recording voice-overs for 6 radio station liners. Luckily, I bought too many balanced cables on amazon for my electronic drum kit, so I just put them to good use! You’re definitely my hero today. Thanks again!❤

  • I hooked up a Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen to mixer via Aux send except I had audio split and go to both left and right websites for stereo sound for the articles I’m using in conjunction with this. Thanks so much for this article, it worked well for me. Now I’m curious if I should get 4th gen or just stick with the 3rd gen. 3rd gen sounds great so unsure if 4th gen is even worth it. Thanks again!

  • My setup is super weird but really kinda unavoidable with how picky I am. I wanted absolute control without having to use software. With two computers, one Xbox Series X and a Nintendo Switch, it was kinda tricky to achieve sending all the sound to the same place. My solution was buying a MG10XU. It worked flawlessly by its self until I decided I wanted to get away from usb mics. I have all of my devices plugged into my mixer or my monitors since some doesn’t have headphone ports. As long as the sound can go through hdmi it’ll go straight from my monitor to my mixer. So when I decided it was time to upgrade from my blue yeti to a XLR mic I realized that my whole mix would also get fed into my party chat along with my voice (for live streaming this works). So to separate both sources and still keep the level of control I desired, I decided to buy a 2i2 because it has line out and 48v phantom power (which I needed). So now my Shure SM7B runs through my 2i2 to my cl1 amp and rolls mute switch and the audio gets fed into my gaming computer for my voice chat and in game comms. That audio also gets fed out through the line out to website 1 on my mixer which then feeds into my streaming computer. This way while streaming I can turn down or up anything without needing to adjust anything through software or affecting my party audio. Also for anyone in a similar situation you can split your audio by plugging in your mixer to your computer and monitor. Send whatever you want to split to the opposite device.

  • Hi Jordan I don’t suppose you plan on doing a TRS vs TS cable article any time in the future? There seems to be so much conflicting information around. Some people making it really complex and some perhaps explaining incorrectly. I enjoy your no nonsense style so I’m curious to hear your view on it and whether you think it is particularly an issue or not in the home. If I were plugging a device with balanced outputs into the line-ins of the Yamaha MG10, would I be okay to use TS cable seeing as the Yamaha line-ins are unbalanced? I’ve also read about there being a difference in gain between TRS and TS.

  • Amazing vid! That being said, I am recording my band live through a powered mixer w/ E drums (we all wear headphones w/ the mix coming from the board), signal is sent to an interface (just bought the focusrite 2i2 gen 4). My mixer has 2 rca plugs out, I am using a 2 rca to a 1/4 inch stereo cable and sending this signal to 1 line input. Would it sound better to get 2 separate rca to 1/4 inch mono cables and send them to line 1 and line 2 input? Or would I use 2 separate rca to 1/4 inch stereo cables? Again great vid and not often discussed! Also, I am going to experiment with the air vs air 2 features and no air and will let you know the results! Much love from Upstate NY! Oh, I am currently using Audacity as my DAW is the Ableton lite that comes with the focusrite better?

  • Wow! This really helped me with my issues! I have a Mackie 16-channel soundboard and I’m trying to plug it in to my scarlet 2i2 interface. This helped clear out the basis. I’m also settled with the Logic Pro to record using both. Thanks again! Does anyone know what are the best XLR TRS balanced cables in the market? Some of them are very expensive and I’m trying to get a hold of the gold ones. Ps. Thanks once again! I just subscribed. 🙌🏼👍🏼💯

  • Hey Jordan, I’m running a poker livestream with Shure lav mics running into a Yamaha audio mixer. I also have commentators on a separate audio mixer. For some reason when I connect the Yamaha board to the computer via usb, the sound from the lav mics seem to create problems. However when I connect via quarter inch to computer line it seems to be better. But still not perfect. A friend of mine produces a similar livestream and suggested I use the Focusrite so I bought one. I’m having such insane audio issues and could use some help. My set up is not common. The poker table which the players are mics are connected to the Yamaha audio mixer which is output to the poker software which is then connected to vmix. This audio (and stream) is delayed 10min and then output to vmix. As you can see this if very unusual. Was wondering if there was someone that I could speak with to help trouble shoot. Will the Focusrite help with these problems or am I just wasting money? Thank you! @sociallywild

  • Hi I’m trying to run this to an audio mixer to an audio interface via the left and right mono inputs for stereo but I don’t know where on the mixer they are. The ones on the front seem to only refer the auxiliary and the fx inputs but no the main left and right so I can record in stereo as per your demo as I don’t want to do anything more complicated. I have the Behringer XENYX 1204 usb interface Many thanks

  • Thank you so much for your articles! I have a question about getting sound from the mixer to the computer. I only have one USB 2.0 slot available on the computer, and I need to plug in both a mouse/keyboard combo and the mixer audio. Would you recommend using a USB hub to achieve this, or taking the mixer audio through the 3.5mm in? The mixer does have the USB card output. I’m just trying to figure out the simplest method with the best quality audio. This is going into a livestream using VMix, with VMix putting the audio and article together, if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance!

  • QUESTION: I have an older Yamaha Stagepass Mixer (no usb connection) so if I run the speaker out cables to my Scarlet gen 4 line in – am I able to put some volume up on the mixer or is it too much power and needs to be very low??? (I don’t think I have those other controls you mentioned. I only have a main volume and a mic volume). The reason I ask this is – trying my SM58 mic straight into the Scarlett 2i2 4th gen it is so very low that I barely hear it even with volume all the way up (whether through headphones and/or through monitor speakers)? Please help????????????????

  • Hello! very useful article, thank you. I would have a question : I need to record my voice (going in XLR into the mixer) with some effects given by the table. It’s a mic like yours that needs the “fantom” on. There aren’t any other instruments on the table, just gotta record my voice on the instrumental The other musicians of my band already did. What’s best to do with a fantom mic (+effects) only: is it better to go into Scarlett 2i2 in MONO or in STEREO ? (does it do a difference, since the mic is a MONO at its source ?)

  • Thanks for the tutorial. My mixer has built in usb but I could not get it to work with zoom app. I manage to get it working with Scarlett 2i2, which results in awesome sound. Routing from mixer to Scarlett and from Scarlett back to mixer. Mic plugged in mixer with playback youtube karaoke songs sound big. So Scarlet definitely has superior sound over external usb sound card going to mixer. Recording karaoke session through zoom just confirms how good the sound is. Instead of the mains out, I had to use Aux Out as mentionned whch leads me to use this path. It turns out as a pleasant experience as I strive for days getting the built in usb to work with zoom and end up giving up til I stumble on your website.

  • This is now my current setup. Originally, I put up my 2i2 when I got my MG10xu. I had my computers audio output running through the board to my speakers and headphones. I decided to run my board through the 2i2 again, so I can control and listen my audio through the 2i2. This way I only power up the MG10xu when I’m recording. Then turn it off when I’m just doing production, listening to music, or perusal Kettner Creative. 😉 Has anyone setup their 2i2 with a USB-C to USB-C cord vs the USB-C to USB cord that comes with it? I’m game to try, I just don’t have that specific cord at the moment. It kinda just occurred to me that I have a Thunderbolt port on my laptop. Did you notice a difference?

  • Question: I have the 212 scarlett for live streaming. However i want to use it for live gigs. The two 1/4 jack balanced stereo speaker outputs on the back i send to the balanced stereo inputs of my amp and then from the amp my speakers… it works very well… however it only works when Direct Monitor is enabled on the Focusrite. When i switch off direct monitor i get no sound out of the amp. My Question is – Are the two 1/4 jack focusrite outputs only intended to work when in monitor on use only? When & how can i use without it switched on? Thanks in advance.

  • I recently got a Mackie Mix8 mixer, but whenever I route it directly into my line in/mic inputs, I get either horrible buzzing or my microphone isn’t picking up (after testing the website by turning all gain and eq control knobs, with no sound anyway). I’ve read online that this is probably because my computer’s sound card isn’t powerful enough to handle running the mixer through line in. Do you think using the Scarlett 2i2 would solve my problem as a sound card work around? Thank you!

  • Hey, I’m looking for help. I have a Scarlett 2i2 and I have it connected directly to my Ipad 8 gen (lighting cable) We are recording for a pod cast but want to add a 3rd mic is there a way to connect the Scarlett 2i2 into a mixer that allows 4 mic websites to record on separate tracks? We are using GarageBand Any and all help would be appreciated

  • For dual pc would this work? Goxlr mini on game pc, so i can appropriately use all my faders, and send all my audio to my stream pc fine in one mix(over capture cards hdmi) but i want to separate mic audio from game. So could I route/send mic to line out of goxlr routing table and then aux that to focusrite line in and connect it to my laptop and add that as a separate audio source from my stream mix? That way i can add separate filters.

  • Ok, so my question is, when recording in my home studio, and the instrumentalist says “I want to hear more of myself playing while recording” how exactly can I do that without turning him up in the mix? Would I have to purchase a personal mixer so he can control levels in his headphone mix? If so how can I pair the personal mixer to the scarlet? Thanks!

  • Thank you for the article. Now i did this yesterday but i could not get the music out in the article. How do I get the music out. I was able to get great mic sound on the fb live. But I have music want to stream and sing on the lives. How do I set that up? If you already have a article for this please pin.

  • Hey! I have been perusal your articles on youtube over the years but I have a confusion. I have a Scarlett solo that I connected to my MGX10 mixer and I am using logic pro for my midi keyboard. But now I wanted to know how I can live stream on Instagram or Facebook using my iPhone but I don’t know how I will connect all those stuff to get my sound from the mixer or Scarlett solo
