Great article, but it wont work for me, should this Focusrite Control software work with the Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen USB Interface, I want to use the loopback feature to record internal audio into FLStudio, I have downloaded a version of Focusrite Control, but when I run it, I get a message saying no hardware connected? My Interface is definitely working, I’ve never had any issues with it.
To reduce latency for overdubs when recording through plug-ins, lower the buffer size in your DAW as low as possible (usually 64 samples.) While this setting is not always possible, depending on your PC/Mac CPU capability, 128 to 256 samples is almost always acceptable with a track or two with virtually any modern computer. Overdubbing is usually quite acceptable in the 5-10ms range a small buffer size offers. And always turn phantom power off and wait a few seconds to discharge the 12-48volts of current BEFORE unplugging a condenser mic to avoid a “pop” that could destroy a driver!

So I use a guitar fx unit into my input and I output to studio monitors. I like to practice using my desktop audio via USB (3rd gen) and guitar but I notice the sound quality goes down when I hit stereo monitor. If it is off my desktop audio quality is much fuller. So I hope that you can help!! _(It’s long, so bear with me…) _ So, here’s my situation: I have a microphone, an external compressor (a dbx 166) and a small Behringer USB mixer that I use as my audio interface, as it has a USB port. I’m not very happy with the mixer because, even with the gain turned down, it has quite a bit of floor noise. So I’ve been looking around and I think that the Scarlett 2i2 would be perfect for what I do/need. At the moment, the way I connect everything goes like this: – Microphone into the compressor – From the compressor into the mixer – From the mixer into my computer I know, this is not ideal, to use the compressor’s make-up gain as my mic pre-amp. The Scarlett, from what I’ve read, has great pre-amps and great converters, so I’d like to use the Scarlett not only as my audio interface but also as my mic pre-amp. The question is: how can I use my compressor in this case? Since the Scarlett 2i2 has 2 seperate inputs, I was thinking about the following but I’m not sure if this would work (hence this question to you). Here’s the idea: – Microphone into the 1st input of the Scarlett – From the Line Out of the Scarlett into the Compressor – From the compressor into the 2nd input of the Scarlett – Finally, from the USB output of the Scarlett into my computer and in my DAW, only select the signal coming from the 2nd input.

I know for sure I need 2 microphones (1 for guitar, 1 for voice) – so that eats up both XLR preamp inputs of Scarlett. But I would like to have the possibility to expand my recording possibilities from time to time – for example: a) plug another mic for one more instrument (second guitar, cello…) b) record guitar with 2 mics concurrently, or with both mic and “k&k pure preamp” (I have k&k pure mini in guitar) Ideally I would need Scarlett with 3 preamp inputs (Scarlett 18i8 with 4 is bulky and expensive), but is it possible to use Scarlett 4i4 which has 2 more TRS inputs, and plug in another standalone mic preamp or “k&k pure preamp” (with some kind of TS to TRS adaptor) ? Won’t this affect recording quality somehow ?

It’s a long shot that you will see this and respond, but I have a question that I can’t find an answer for anywhere online… I have a BOSS MZ-2 digital metalizer pedal that has two outputs; 1 mono, 1 stereo… Apparently it sounds great when using the doubling feature by running two outputs into two amps simultaneously, but I am trying to see if I can run the two outputs into a Scarlett 2i2 instead, then record onto the PC. Hi! I have the Focusrite Studio One and I found out that I can use it with zoom or do a live performance without downloading the driver. I figured I could use the camera on my computer to record my music with the Focusrite without the app. I tried and it doesn’t work. Even if I plug my device, the article has the same sound with or without the Focusrite. It seems that the computer doesn’t recognize the interface. How come it works with zoom and YouTube and it doesn’t work with the camera of my laptop. Thank you very much for your response!
Hope you can give me some advice on headphone (output). I am using Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen. I can’t herar my recording through my headphones connected to my laptop. I use Adobe Audition. I went into preferences/audio hardware and I see input but i don’t see output anywhere. Or does the output go back to the Focusrite 2i2 and am supposed to monitor my recording and playback thru the headphone jack on the audio interface 2i2. I’d like to digitizing my vinyl records through my budget turntable system; Music hall mmf mark1, pro-ject phonobox preamp. The cable included was a USB-C to USB-A and the box says it is a USB 2 device. I just opened up my studio for booking at my current office space where I usually just make beats. I’ve experienced latency with my scarlett 2i2 3rd gen and some static/vnyl noise coming out on vocals. I am still on a budget as I am currently spending $ on bills and other products. Im not really focusing on sessions with bands where I need so many input connections. The Mic I’m currently using is a Warm wa87. Is there a Audio Interface you recommend to use for now to upgrade from my Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen if the Apollo Twin is out the picture? PSA if I gotta make it happen ill get the more expensive recommendation.
Question, please! Like lots of people, I love karaoke! Well, I can do this so easily with a mixer. Plug a mic into a Combo input, take my cell phone headset out, use a 1/8″ to a split 1/4″ cable, into inputs 3/4 of the mixer, and good to go. No go with this USB interface. How about a Scarlett 4i4? No go with it either, as the inputs in the back need LINE-LEVEL inputs and NOT from a cell phone! Now, one possible way out is this: plug the 1/4″ jacks into the two Combo inputs, (will that work?) and record the background track on a stereo track on the DAW. Then, pull those plugs out, plug in a microphone, and then record on a new track alongside the background music. So the question is: can I take the headphone out from a cell phone or Tablet and plug in the split 1/4″ jacks into the Combo inputs and get a good signal? Thx much!

Hey man. I’ve had my 3rd gen for about 4 months, and I’m having a problem that a ton of people are having that there seems to be no solution for. I use FL studio and during recording, it will randomly stop taking input before picking back up for a few seconds. It doesn’t power off, it stays on. It just stops recording. It’s happening to tons of people with different setups on different daws (I have a powerful built PC myself), but they all have a 2i2 3rd Gen. I’ve tried several cords, driver updates, you name it. No solutions. Can you maybe investigate this and see if there’s a solution? I can email you with more info if you like. It’s the most annoying thing and I wish I had bought something else.
Question: If I have an interface with 4 outputs, can I use this without a DAW? Can i set it up with 4 separate outputs into a mixer and setup each output as a separate “device” on my pc so I can send separate apps to separate websites on my mixer? I was told I would need buy an audio interface to get a good quality sound. My objective is to get a clean sound though my speaker while am playing at home. When you use “direct monitor” on the interface, does the audio from the laptop still play out through the monitors/headphones connected to the interface? I’ve been using a Clarett 8pre thunderbolt on my mac for a number of year with logic pro but I have been wondering- should an analog compressor be used along with the Focusrite, as I know the Logic’s plug in compressors cant control any mic peaks during recording, say if something dynamic slipped past during gain staging that was a little too much for teh DAW to take an go into digital noise. Was just curious as I got rid of a lot of my old analog rack gear (compressor, limiters, gates) several years ago. Thanks
I have Scarlett Solo 2nd accommodate which has I believe RCA (Red & White) cable going into Line Outputs at the back of Scarlett. However, the other end of this cable is not 1/4″ TRS that my JBL Professional Speakers with High Level Balanced inputs. Where can I get a cable to accommodate this set up? I just got my scarlett 2i2 3rd gen interface about a week ago. Idk why, but for whatever reason, as soon as I turn on phantom power I get nothing but static in my headphones. There have been a few intermittent time where it stopped and worked normally. But for no obvious reason. I’ve done everything I can think of. I made sure I had the latest driver. I checked and rechecked to make sure the settings were correct. I’ve tried in different rooms in my house thinking it may be interference. But its both worked and stopped working in the same room, so I don’t believe that’s it either. I’ve been to focusrites site looking for answers and emailed them. So far, nothing. I also don’t think it’s my DAW which is also reaper. I have the same issue whether in reaper or not in regards to the mic with phantom power. I can listen to music and playback perfectly fine. But as soon as I go to record with phantom power, nothing but static. Which the static itself is recorded. (I tried just to see) If I record anyway, the static can be heard in playback. Even once phantom power is off.

I have recently damaged my behringer (interface) connecting my dynamic mic (xlr cable) and not knowing exactly how to use the phantom power. Can I hear the sound of the backing tracks on the PC from youtube (which i download in wmv article format), using music software from Band in a box / DAW, using THU guitar amp simulation software, when it is connected only via USB cable? Or should I connect to the line input 1 and 2 as well? I ask this because I have an very old TASCAM us1641 which does not work like this. Probably a problem with the asio driver? How should I connect a TV to this focus scarlet 2i2 when i don’t record / practise with guitar with the studio monitors. Hello, I was wondering if maybe you could help me out with my current setup, I’ve have these presonus 3.5 Eris monitors for a few years now and I love them, I just bought a new 2i2 and the presonus sub8 subwoofer, to pair with my monitors. Now my question is do I have to leave the subwoofer on at all times ? Or do I have to always bend down under my desk to turn them off all the time? There’s no bypass pedal or anything on this sub, and I just realized that yesterday too, what if I want to use the monitors without the sub ? So I turned off the sub and tried playing from the monitors only and the sound is so low becusee the inputs are coming from the powered off subwoofer. I hope this makes sense, and I know long…. but it’s very frustrating, I’m thinking my only option is to get the t10 presonus sub that comes with a bypass pedal or maybe plug my sub8 that I have now into a wifi outlet which then I could power off using the app on my phone/or with Alexa. I still find that a off solution. But if you have any knowledge of this or maybe seen other setup and how they deal with such things I would 100% appreciate it!!!
My problem is very simple. I have a usb/xlr mic and I have it plugged in with xlr but nothing displays in audacity. I know my mic isn’t supposed to show that it’s on, cause in usb has a light, but I tried every mode you mentioned and when I record, I never see a waveform of my voice. hi dude. thanks for your article. i started recording with the scarlet 2nd gen and i must say that its very simple. the problem started when i added distortion to my guitar recording. i can now hear both the dry di signal behind the distorted effect. i have looked everywhere and i cant find anything that removed the dry signal. anything you could help me with? thanks a lot
Hey man, I’ve a problem with my audio interface (M-audio M-track 2). I use monitors to listen to what I’m playing and recording (guitars mostly). When I listen to the recorded audio through the audio interface, it sounds perfectly normal. But when I hear the same recorded audio file using headphones on my laptop or phone, the audio seems to be of lower quality. Is the listening experience of laptops/phones worse than that of the audio interface output?
Great article! Quick question tho: If I have a Stereo TRS Cable that splits into Left and Right Mono RCA Cables, will that work as well? Tried to plug in a mono instrument jack from the Left output of my Mackie Onyx Artist 1.2 to the Left input of my Mackie speakers and my guitar was so soft! Could the cables be an issue?
Im using shure sm57 and when I record I hear the voice with almost 1-2 seconds delay and it makes it impossible for me to record music I have tried different DAW but I still get delay and I have enabled direct monitoring but it doesnt help, btw my headphones are wireless and I have conected them to my pc not audio interface
For just voice audio recording I’ve found that setting up my Samson Q9U into my 2i2 3rd Gen into Reaper, I have to turn the gain on the Focusrite almost to 100% just to get near the -18db level. From perusal other articles with this setup, it seems like they hit that mark with the gain set at 50% or just a little more. What am I missing?
I tried to set my new audio interface but failed miserably. I just bought a Rode AI-1 and tried to connect the mic I have, an Audio Technica ATR2100 usb but I just hear horrendous interference. The mic has been great but I thought I could improve by getting an audio interface but when I connect to the Rode with just an XLR cable, there is no power to the mic and I cannot record. If I connect the mic to the computer at the same time as the Rode I get a lot of interference, especially if I am listening through headphones. Not sure what to do. I am guessing you could tell what I am doing wrong. Is the usb mic incompatible with an audio interface?
So I’ve been using a focusrite interface a few years and it worked fine. Got a new computer and it goes crazy when I try to use it. It very quickly flashes back n forth between the 2 outputs and won’t let me select the interface. Anyone else ever have this issue? It’s been like this for 2 weeks and has completely halted my progress and ability to record or even play.
I am hoping the Scarlett 2i2 will allow me to record at 192KHz / 24-bit without choking my DAW (Bandlab CAKEWALK). Because as things are, recording with my built-in Realtek Audio soundcard, CAKEWALK will tend to freeze and crash if I record at higher than 48Khz. And this even though I have the very latest CPU and DDR5 memory chips installed. All I can surmise is that the Realtek soundcard is the bottleneck here…. the “weakest link”.
Hey there! I literally just got the interface – Scarlett focusrite 2i2 – 3rd gen interface with the Rode nt1-a. I’m having a problem though which is incredibly frustrating. I’m getting literally a ‘Wind Noise’ with a mix of noises that sound like thunder and static robotic noises also with the interface and I can’t seem to fix it at all or figure it out. Have you any idea what this problem could be? The Rode mic is working with it but not as it should because I’m getting those awful noises with my interface and it’s passing the problem onto the mic too because of it. It’s literally so frustrating not being able to figure or fix it. Now I do have an older MacBook- I have a mid 2012 one with MacOS Catalina with update 10.15.7 and I’m just wondering would the system or update I have be causing this noise or can I rule that out? I’m really struggling to figure this out so anything you know that may be the problem would be very helpful! Thank you! Ps, great article 👍
Why is it my microphone and interface are still working when my daw is closed? And I can hear through the microphone at all times no way of turning it down except for the gain on the interface. It was working where I could only hear through the mic if it was armed but now I hear through at all times when its plugged in…. any help??

There is an Audio Interface called Wrugste. It is a Focusrite Clone. I’m Guessing It Is From Same Chinese Manufacturer That Builds the Focusrite. Wrugste is a Fly by Night Company That +Only Produces the Mechanics. They Don’t Have a Team That Builds the Software. Probably Because Focusrite Would Sue, or Their Would Be copyright Issues. The Wrugste Works Mechanically. Gain Light Lights Up When i Speak Into It. It’s Just, Windows Doesn’t Have a Driver Made. I Heard Apple Has a Driver That Works. Not Sure, I Don’t Own Apple. Wrugste Doesn’t Even Have a Website. It Looks Identical to a Focusrite, Even Red Metallic.
At Focusrite, you’ll get an audio interface with outdated USB 2.0 connectivity instead of the the current USB 3.0 or USB 3.2. We could make it faster but, we just don’t. You’ll also get outdated plug-in suites with your purchase that you can’t even use like the Focusrite Red 2 & Red 3 Plug-in Suite but in the end it really won’t matter because your audio interface will soon become a brick that will not even work with your continually updated OS because… we just stop giving you the support you need and we will soon delete your interface completely off of our own website. We will try to sell you a new one soon though and we’ll do the same thing to you with it. At Focusrite we care… about pocketing your money. 👍 😉
