What is the age of glamour?

The 1930s was a transformative decade, marked by two World Wars and the 1929 Wall Street financial crash, marking the end of the Jazz Age. It was known as the Golden Age of Glamour, offering a much-needed escape for flapper women transitioning into a more austere lifestyle. The rise of matching skirt suits, jersey sportswear, and fur coats was seen as affordable yet stylish options. The waistline returned to its natural position, with broad-shouldered tailored jackets, boleros, shrugs, banjo sleeves, and seams below the bust.

Hemlines fell to mid-calf for daywear and reached the floor for figure-hugging evening dresses. One notable style element was the use of upper skirt yokes, layered skirts, and lowered necklines with Peter Pan collars, pussy cat bows, scarves, or ruffles as focal points.

What is the history of glamour magic?

Glamour, originally a term for a magic spell, has evolved into a term for a non-magical item used to create an attractive appearance. In cultural studies, glamour is the impression of attraction or fascination that a luxurious or elegant appearance creates, intensifying reality. It can be a person, event, location, technology, or product like clothing. For glamour to be successful, it requires sprezzatura, an appearance of effortlessness and distance, which transcends everyday life and is slightly mysterious and idealized.

Glamorous things are neither opaque nor transparent, but translucent, favorably showing things. The early Hollywood star system specialized in Hollywood glamour, systematically glamorizing their actors and actresses.

Denny’s Major Arcana documents how present-day individuals subvert the taboo of ‘witch’ by reclaiming diverse spiritual practices.

  • I have not had a job with an official uniform for going on eight years, but I do think of the clothes I wear while working as a kind of armor. Knee-length skirt, cardigan or blazer, earrings, enamel pin, eyeliner, lipstick, glasses, fountain pen clipped to my lapel. I look like a witchy librarian. I’ve had students say that “You look like you know things.” which is exactly what I’m going for. (Though my favorite answer to their questions is “I’m not sure. How do you think we can find the answer?”) I haven’t considered it glamour magic before, but I see it now.

  • Awhile back, I experimented with glamour magic,to test its effectiveness. I ran a few field exercises on some oil that I charged.(Im a guy btw) It worked & had a noticeable effect. Was a weird effect tho. Glamor magic needs to be done carefully because it’s an attract energy. And with random people,in the street,u never know WHAT you’re bringing into your orbit.

  • Hi there, I’ve just in recent months starting to actively practice witchcraft and I just wanted to say how much I love your website. You have a fantastic and non-judgmental way of looking at things, which really resonates with me…as well as your sense of humour! Brightest blessings, love from Lorna xxx

  • I clicked on this article (unaware of the time; I thought this article was probably older and I was just finding it now) in most definitely need of some glamour magic perspectives. I was so surprised it was posted just yesterday and it showed up exactly when I needed it to. Thank you for the great article!

  • A buttery tender steak, smoky sweet ribs, and mariscos make me glow. I use complex perfume oils as well to attract different types of attention or self soothe. Quality clothes with pleasing textures and prints/colors carry a magic of their own, and caring for your textiles becomes a meditative routine. When I get ready in the morning, it’s like I’m composing a little poem about the type of day I’m about to have.

  • I am so specific about what I enchant. I have declared many things off limits because it just feels… wrong. Like gifts from friends or relatives. I only enchant marbles, stones, and jewelry that I make or buy. I swore never to enchant my watch other than a protection spell so it doesn’t break again because it was a gift from my now dead great grandmother.

  • I’d love to use a little more glamour magic, unfortunately I’m either so down in the dumps that I can’t find the energy or I do have enough energy and end up looking like a clown or a five year old who has found their parents make up… (I am clueless when it comes to makeup!) My best glamour magic is my pair of high heeled New Rock boots, they are just so kick ass! Wishing you well.

  • That was the most charming product placement I’ve ever seen. It was again very educational, entertaining and funny (Karen 😅). Charisma is everything and with good care and a beautiful scent, even the most inconspicuous Griselda can become a princess. Beauty comes from within and it’s all a matter of conviction. 😅 Thank you very much! 👏🌱🌳💚 P.S. Du wärst eine hervorragende Lebensberaterin und Buchautorin. 😉👍

  • You talking about finding something disgusting in the fridge brought awful flashbacks of… THAT thing. That thing was a container of dough that had, at some point, exploded in the back of the fridge and over half a year grew. By the time I had found it, because I was moving a shelf to fix it, it was too awful to describe the appearance. My Sweetheart is very much not a fan of touching anything moldy and normally I’m ok doing so, but it was too gross even for me. So… I took off my hoodie (It’s very cold around my home and being a Ginger I am constantly cold anyway), I untied my hair, and I pulled out my perfume. This perfume I use rarely, because it is a scent I find calming, but my Sweetheart finds it very… Ahem, yes, well… I asked them to clean THAT out of the fridge and they didn’t hesitate, on the condition I had to let them use my lap as a pillow. (I am usually constantly doing stuff, so sitting still for a half hour is pain to me.)

  • I’m a Christian. Would I still be welcome on your website? I know witches respect all paths because to you there is no right way. Thought I would check out of courtesy. I always try to lead with listening, respect and love over judging things just because they are different from me. Thanks for sharing your website with everyone 🙂

  • I’d be cautious with perfumes, there are folk, like myself who are highly sensitive to smells – a strong perfume can trigger migraines. If I were interviewing for a job, and someone walked in with a super strong perfume, I probably would not hire them as those kinds of scents can trigger or make a migraine worse. I’ve had coworkers walk in and I could smell them long before I ever saw them. With that said, I do use incense and essential oils, but I am careful what and when I use. I very much enjoy what you have to offer and how you have science to work with it.

  • hey, I just wanted to say that you’re the first person whose thoughts and advice on witchcraft really resonate with me. I have always been very skeptical and so trying to get into witchcraft (which I’ve been trying for a whole year now) when everyone you see believes in deities and crystals and astrology isn’t that easy haha. I was almost about to fully give it up because of how I thought it isn’t for me, when I discovered your website yesterday. Your approach is so simple, practical and makes so much sense. Especially how you describe the psychology of it all is so plausible! Today I tried some of your tips (like affirmations when getting ready and visualizing during a short meditation in the morning) and I just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do and for being open about your practices and beliefs 🙂 <3
