What is witchcraft used for?
Witchcraft, a practice of summoning evil spirits and demons to cause harm, was closely linked to religion in the medieval Church. Priests could exorcise those possessed by malign spirits. In the 16th century, people believed witchcraft explained sudden ill-fortune, leading to an obsession with witch-hunting. The Witchcraft Act, passed in 1542, defined witchcraft as a crime punishable by death. It was repealed five years later but restored in 1562. Witch-hunting became an obsession in some parts of the country.

The term “witch” is primarily used in colloquial English, with women being the male equivalent. Modern dictionaries distinguish four meanings of the term: a person with supernatural powers, a practitioner of neo-pagan religion, a mean or ugly old woman, or a charming or alluring girl or woman. The term “witch” was first used to refer to a bewitching young girl in the 18th century, and “witch” as a contemptuous term for an old woman is attested since the 15th century.

What is the difference between a witch and a Wiccan?
Wicca, a reconstructionist religion founded by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s, has a structure and rules, while witchcraft is a practice. Many witches don’t consider themselves Wiccans, and Wicca is becoming outdated for many people. Despite this, Wicca has influenced the landscape of witchcraft in North America, and the author shares her journey with All Things Considered. Despite being skeptical of religion and spirituality, she began her journey with Wicca to explore the world of witchcraft and its influence on modern practices.
When was witchcraft illegal?
The Witchcraft Act of 1604, also known as “An Act against Conjuration, Witchcraft and Dealing with Evil and Wicked Spirits,” expanded the 1562 Act, imposing the death penalty without clergy benefit for those who invoked evil spirits or communed with familiar spirits.
What is the goal of witchcraft?
The terms witchcraft and witch have evolved over time, with some referring to them as a range of ritual practices aimed at manipulating occult, spiritual, or supernatural power, while others describe women as antisocial, rebellious, or independent of male power. Modern religious groups, mainly of 20th and 21st-century origin, often refer to their traditions as witchcraft and themselves as witches. These practitioners often draw heavily on the imagery and terminology associated with witchcraft in European cultures but invest it with new meanings.
The term witchcraft originated in the Early Middle Ages as the Old English term wiccecraeft. Prior to the 19th century, the common understanding of witch and witchcraft among English speakers was a negative one, with a witch being someone who drew on supernatural or occult power to harm others, often referred to as maleficium.

Neopagan writer Isaac Bonewits proposed dividing witches into various types, including Neopagan, Feminist, Neogothic, Neoclassical, Classical, Family Traditions, Immigrant Traditions, and Ethnic. The word “wicce” and “wiccecræft” are over a thousand years old, possibly derived from the Old English verb “wiccian”, meaning “to practice witchcraft”.
The Oxford English Dictionary suggests that wicce and wicca were likely derived from the Old English verb “wiccian”, which has no clear cognates in other Germanic languages outside of English and Low German.

The word “coven” originated in the mid-1600s and means “assembly”.

Love this. I completely agree with energy and intention, spellwork doesn’t need to be this stressful, rigid thing and doing what feels right is the best. I’m also glad to have the intrusive thoughts thing brought up, because I have a lot of those and sometimes I stress a bit about manifesting those thoughts. Thank you for another great article 💜💜🌙
I’d say one thing may have been proven by science, and that is the transference from matter to energy and vice versa. The expression E=MC2(squared idk how to put the real thing) That explain how mass and matter have a direct energy equivalent as well. So i truly believe that once you start writing intentions and having rituals where you burn that in your offering bowl, that matter will be changed to energy and that intention sent out into the universe
The first time I’ve seen a witch show how they believe magic works (this also includes men, cause men can be witches). I believe your belief determines your reality. You are the creator (imo) and I’m glad to see someone talk about this. Thank you. Edit: Just wanted to mention anyone can be/ identify as a witch. Of any gender. Not just men and women.
Amazing description of it. I also think the placebo effect can be put into play into this. For example a stone might not have a property or maybe it does but if you truly believe it does it will. Or how I believe christian exorcisms work the priest believes his god is helping him but I believe he is using his energy to repel the entity.
Thank you so much for this article Bente! Especially when at the end you talked about “how do you Believe energy works* because I can’t say I “feel”energy. I do visualize it a lot because my mind goes and makes everything into something I can see in my mind’s eye but other than “I think this is what energy would do” I can’t say I have managed to experience it in way where”I know” so at the moment I can only “believe” . Thank you so so much for this article!
Totally agree with needing to put in both intention and energy. It’s the same with other things in life. If I’m saying ‘I’m gonna clean my bathroom’, it doesn’t end up being clean, just by saying it 🤷 I need to put energy into the task to actually have a nice and clean bathroom again. I also have firsthand experience in this. One time I did a spell in the woods in the dark. And honestly, I was scared shitless 😅 I was able to put in some intention, but I couldn’t focus my energy at all. It ended up to be a total fluke, aside from important lessons learned 😅
I used this to find a childhood friend of mine who I’ve not seen since primary school I even forgot his name at one point and i kept on trying to remember my mate’s name and when I did I kept on saying his name since and then last year when i went park I bumped into him I freaked out about it cos I accidentally manifested it
i love you and i love your work, your articles are lovely and really well made i actually went shock when i realized you don’t have like, 1mi subscribers because the quality of your content is amazing!! i just wanted to point something silly but maybe you would use some tiny criticism? 😅 you repeat “for example” TOO much 😭 i couldn’t help noticing it and it annoyed me a bit, like, there was a timeframe you said it once each phrase, there’s no need for that you speak so nicely im pretty sure you can improve even more❤❤❤
When you mentioned the raising energy bit by swaying i found it funny cause for the last 3 minutes prior i was just sitting swaying left and right sorta in an infinity symbol out of habit. Funny coincidence. Always wanna say you seem like a lovely person. Love the tattoos and such. I’m normally not big on piercings and the ear thingies personally but you pull that all off very well ^_^.
Thank you this was excellent. I agree with what you said about all things being energy – I think my gods (Woden, Thunor etc) are essentially energy with consciousness operating across multiple dimensions. I would add also the danger of non-specific requests; for example just wishing for money – you may receive money but it is becuase a relative has suddenly died and you receive an inheritance. Sure you got your wish, but at what cost? I also think sacrifice is needed – if you receive you shoulf also give. That could be in the form of an offering or even volunteer work at a cause linked to your request or your chosen god. For example donate to a cat charity if you ask Freyja’s assistance.
Think of the witches hat, the energy is from the plane of the physical into the spiritual with the point of intention. Also the witches blade follows this form and so does the pointed finger of the hand, all to illustrate that you need to focus energy with intention. The opposite of this is the feminine form, the chalice, the cauldron, the bowl, the jar or the bottle. This is what holds the intention into a form to be manifest. It’s all sacred geometry when you break it down.
I agree with the intention meaning loosely direction, for myself I think why many of the magic i have done and sometimes still do, because I am always a little distracted so my intention is also a little distracted, the magic i use works mostly but rarely fully where i want it to work,if that makes any sense . I mix Chi Gong and Tai Chi and also taoist ways of being to use energy I also think this is because many people have told me through out my life that i see things differently so I tend to look at the full picture from my perspective just enough that its also possibly why magic for me doesn’t work fully the way I intend it to lol . I also think that I need to spend more time not thinking too much because of the ripple or butterfly effect. A few years back I was asking the universe for at least 14 months about what I should do with my truck fix it and it probably will cost me allot more money or try and sell it go into debt, I asked the tarot and did a little magic looking for an answer, what happened was I got rear ended in my truck wrote it off I was mostly ok but in the accident i was pushed into another womans car so the cause and effect not only effect me but two other people as well, this is why I also am careful with doing magic because it always has an effect of other things and or people. In this case for myself it worked out because the insurance gave me more for my truck then I paid plus I felt drawn to a car lot ( I never trust sales people especially car sale people) so I walked there and a a 06 Lexus is350 was just brought in and they just finished detailing it, was right around my price range, then my mother decided she wanted to sell here SUV which had issues ( which wee going to turn into real bad issues) so bought it for 5k and traded it and got 7k ( the lot fixed it resold it for around 12 k) I only paid a total of 8 k for a 12K car .
Yeah, I see it like quantum fields or the “double slit experiment”. It’s like we’re breaking down potentials (waves) into a fixed state (particles). Not just by observing (where you’re attention goes, energy flows) but also by matching, drawing or repelling the energies were working with. I think you said it well when you mentioned some people are naturally good at certain things like visualizing or feeling. It seems we have our own resonance that’s easiest to start from. I love hearing other people’s ideas and experiences in regards to how all this works. Thank you
