Connecticut aquarium Mystic Aquarium has agreed to pay a $12, 200 fine to settle a federal investigation over alleged animal care and water quality violations. What does it mean if a zoo is not AZA-accredited?
The Accreditation Commission evaluates every zoo or aquarium to ensure it meets AZA’s standards for animal welfare, care, and management. This includes assessing living environments, social groupings, health, and nutrition, as well as enrichment for animals. The commission also evaluates the veterinary program, involvement in conservation and research, education programs, safety policies, security, physical facilities, guest services, and staff quality.
To evaluate a zoo or aquarium, candidates fill out a detailed questionnaire, which takes months to complete and six months to study and evaluate. After the application is reviewed, a team of inspectors visits the zoo or aquarium in person, including at least one veterinarian and animal and operations experts. They spend several days visiting each area, interviewing staff, checking records, and assessing the welfare of the animal collection.
The Accreditation Commission meets monthly to evaluate incident reports, progress reports, and conduct other business. Twice a year, the Commission holds hearings to consider all candidates for accreditation. They examine the application, supporting documents, inspection team report, and any information and comments received from outside organizations and individuals. The zoo or aquarium’s senior officials must appear before the Commission to answer questions.
The Accreditation Commission decides whether or not to grant accreditation, regardless of the institution’s size, size, newness, or previous accreditation. High standards are maintained, and not every candidate receives accreditation.
