Fake tanning is a popular method for achieving a flawless bronzed tan while breastfeeding. The active ingredient in most fake tans is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), derived from plant sources like sugar cane, and some self tanners use erythrulose, another carbohydrate found naturally in red raspberries. There is no research to suggest that using self-tan while breastfeeding is unsafe. However, there are two main risks: your baby eating the sunless tanning product if it is sprayed on your breasts, and transferring the self-tan.
The International La Leche League has no evidence to show that using a tanning bed while breastfeeding has any effect on the breastfed baby. Sun tanning outdoors is completely compatible with breastfeeding and will not alter your milk in any way. However, keep your baby out of the sun because an infant’s skin is more vulnerable to UV rays.
Canthaxanthin use has been studied in some cases during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but there is no evidence to show that spray tanning while breastfeeding will do any harm to the baby. No evidence exists that the use of tanning beds has any effect on human milk or breastfed babies.
When having your first baby, it is important to wash your breasts off before feeding your little one and wear a bandeau type bra to cover your breasts during the spray tan. Fake tanning is safe if you use the right products and think about timing, as long as you use the right products and consider the timing.
