Is Mystic Dan Still Running In Belmont?

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan is set to enter the Belmont Stakes, following a strong workout on Saturday. Mystik Dan was dubbed as the favorite to win the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, but fell short, finishing in second place behind Seize the Grey. He entered the 10-furlong Belmont Stakes after a valiant runner-up effort to returning rival Seize the Grey in the Preakness on May 18.

Trainer Kenny McPeek had hinted last week that he wanted to run Mystik Dan in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. After graduating at second asking in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint in November at Churchill Downs, Mystik Dan returned to the winner’s circle in February with an eight-length romp over muddy and sealed going in the race.

Mystik Dan has already arrived in New York to train for the Belmont, but his team is taking things slowly. Mystik Dan finished second in the field of eight horses running in the $2 million, 1 3/16-mile race. After falling short of going back to back following his win by a nose in the Kentucky Derby, it would be a difficult task for him.

Mystik Dan is a nice colt that ran a decent race in the Kentucky Derby. His squeaky barelya nose win after leading handily was slower than past performances. Mystik Dan will also be the first Derby winner since Orb in 2013 to run in the Belmont after losing the Preakness, which sets up the first Derby race.

  • Why is no one talking about forever young being rob of the kentucky derby by sierra leone. At 1:45 sierra leone starts bumping forever young all the way through the stretch. Forever young gets his back legs knocked sideways, thats a whole momentum lost. Stewards need to set high standards of fairness or the sport will be tainted.

  • Sierra Leon clobbered japan horse first down top.of stretch from.outside.then bumped each other all way down stretch. thought be inquiry on S. l. taken down to 3rd. think japan get clobbered from outside and down stretch. he would of won race, S. L. second and mystic dan 3rd. bad ride by jockey bumping all.way down stretch. not changing leads maybe enough clear horse of trouble..just glad the 2 chalks didnt win derby. nice see longshot win it..Good job Mc.peek. got oaks and derby. salute you. racing gods on your side derby stretch cause those 2 closimg om you to win. bumping way to much. lost energy to win it. still.almost did. Lucky!

  • My dad’s name is Dan. My mom and I were joking yesterday morning how that has to be the horse that wins the Derby. It’s fate. So in the afternoon, I go to my favorite bar to watch the race. This bar had a drawing where you put your name in a bag, and there’s one bag for each horse. I wasn’t even going to bother, but one of the bar regulars hands me a slip and just tells me to put my name down and he’ll throw it in. So I do that. I told another guy that’s been to several Derbies that I picked Mystik Dan and he’s like, “yeah kid, your horse doesn’t have a shot in hell”. He’s 90 years old, so I didn’t take offense to the “kid” remark. I did, however, pick the two horses that won the previous two races leading up to the Derby. Some people witnessed it. One guy even went on a betting app and put some cash down on Mystik Dan because he suspected I must know something about horse racing. (I don’t). Of course, I end up winning a $55 gift certificate (which will get me a nice prime rib). The guy who put money on the app won a shitload and bought me the rest of my drinks for the evening. And everyone thinks I’m some kind of horse race betting genius.

  • This announcer does a beautiful job. Forever Young was cheated, he should have been wearing the roses, not trying to take anything from Mystic Dan,but Forever Young also ran a great race. He was cheated. The fact that our great American stewards chose to turn a blind eye makes us all look like a bunch of petty racists. SL cost him the race, not the horse himself, his jockey Tyler Gaffione. He bumped him from the last turn to the wire, nearly a quarter of a mile. FYs jockey didn’t have room to really ride him, the few feet before the wire that his jockey did try, FY shifted gears and was actually getting faster. What a damn shame on all of America. Except for the winner, he had nothing to do with this spectacle. But he wouldn’t have won.

  • Stipes are bad in America, in South Africa the stipes lay an objection for bumping or intimidation, Forever Young was very unlucky, fell sorry for the trainer, owner and jockey, I will say this, if he didn’t get all that in the straight he would have won, still the best at the moment, can win in Japan, Dubai, Saudi and should have won last night

  • I was laughing my butt off at this outcome. Great Race! ‘Mysticism’ was in the air, and I knew the various favorites would not win. For all the stat geeks out there… question: How often has a trainer had his colt AND filly win the Derby and the Oaks in the same year? McPeek’s 150th x 2! Mass props, Kenny.

  • Sierra Leone should have been dq’d for bumping Forever Young. Had he not bumped him multiple times, he might have caught Mistic Dan (spelling??) but he for sure should have been put ahead of SL. The only reasons I can think of why they didn’t was 1-the Japanese jockey didn’t file a complaint and 2-because SL belongs to Chad Brown. Too bad, I believe it cost FY first place.

  • I’m from Adelaide Australia magnificent 150th run for roses I have love of all great races globally but this one always gets me I’ve passion for race calling Travis stone track announcer outstanding, veteran Larry collmus nbc I’m very reluctant to say this but not first time appalling called wrong not one but 2 horses until inside furlong inc mystic dan he over years spoils otherwise superb nbc,ESPN here coverage so inaccurate unclear today he sadly let himself his employer and grand occasion down but I’d dream to one day be at Churchill downs thanks finally on int racing it Richard hoiles up with finest in world on English feature 2:15

  • Thank you Mystic Dan. I finally won the $1 Superfecta on the Kentucky Derby….after trying for 17 years. Animal Kingdom almost got me the SUPERFECTA 14 or so years ago…….So close….I hit the trifecta and other things but just missed. It is a wonderful sport….especially when you cash the ticket!

  • People say Mystik Dan won’t hold off the other two, Sierra Leone and Forever Young, in the next two legs of the Triple Crown, (Preakness or Belmont) . But I hope they are mistaken. MD has bloodlines stretching back to the Godolphin Arabian sire line, which is rare (most Tbreds trace back to Darley Arabian). He would be a good candidate to keep that line alive, if he can grab another victory. Congrats to all. And good luck, Mystik Dan!

  • My first time betting on the Derby, I picked Mystik Dan, something about the name just jumped out to me.. I’m just mad at myself for deciding to decrease the bet size at the last second… I still did ok though.. great race, it had me on my feet for sure, especially when Dan grabbed the lead coming out of that final turn.

  • Technically since the Derby is an American Sport, why are we allowing other Nation(s) horses to compete in our Nation Sport? Sierra Leone is a horse of South Africa, and TO Password and Forever Young came from Japan… Dumb, and taking away from other American horses that could have completed in our Nation’s Favorite Sport.

  • The horse won…do you get it…❤ when play show it was Sierra Leone. No matter what happened it is about the love of the animal do you get it now they still have circus animals in Gainesville it’s a lot of money to take care of the animals I’m so grateful the animal one if you love an animal truly you are grateful

  • Both the 2nd and 3rd ought to have passed the winner but had a prolonded barging match and each rashed the others chace… Tha said the winning ride was briliant and the race was won off the final bend with Brian Hernandez making an inspired and brave move to fly up the rail and kick on.. I wonder what words were exchanged between the riders of the 2nd and 3rd

  • Well, I’m completely pissed over the coverage. They barely showed the horses before loading. That’s when I usually make my final picks because I get to see how they are looking and demeanor. I got fantastic long aerial views and great shots of their companion horses. Little coverage of all the other races line up and previous placements. I get it was the 150th with all the new upgrades to the park, but it isn’t a nature park or fashion show. It’s all about the horses otherwise it wouldn’t be anything. If this is the way they intend to cover it from now on, I’ll am just uninterested. I want to hear about the horse and actually see the horses.
