Is There A Magic Eraser Made By Apple?

Apple CEO announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, along with other features coming in iOS 18. One of the AI-powered features that photographers have long wanted to see is the new Clean Up feature. This feature can remove unwanted subjects and objects from photos with a tap, brush, or circle. Magic Eraser, Google’s AI-powered tool for removing unwanted objects from photos, once reserved for Pixel phones, now works on iPhones and Android devices. The Magic Eraser feature works much like Google’s Magic Eraser and has evolved from a Pixel-exclusive feature to a Google Photos option on both Android platforms.

Apple’s Photos app is getting Google’s Magic Eraser-like Clean Up tool. The tool, powered by Apple Intelligence, can seamlessly remove unwanted objects from images, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser. iPhone users running iOS 15 or higher can now use Google’s Magic Eraser tool in Google Photos on their iPhone to remove unwanted objects and distractions from photos. However, there are also some apps in Apple’s App Store that do the same thing. While the Magic Eraser tool is now part of the Google Photos app for iPhone, it is still tied to Google One. Apple’s version of Magic Eraser is called Clean Up and works pretty much the same way as Google’s tool.

  • For people who are not aware: Magic Eraser was released in 2021 and can be run on device on Pixel phones that are 7(!) generations old. Since last year, Google Photos has a much improved version (Magic Editor) that can also be used for free on any Pixel phone (free cloud service). If you have an iPhone 15 (which today still is the latest available model), you are probably still not getting Clean Up because it can’t handle it. Also, Magic Editor gives way better results than Clean Up.
