The iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard lacks an Escape key, but it has a built-in key combination to replicate its functionality. To access this feature, open the Settings app on your iPad and tap General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys. From there, you can select one of a number of keys on your keyboard and repurpose them. For example, you can remap the Caps Lock key to be ESC on iPad physical keyboards, including Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard, which can be useful for apps like vim that require an ESC key.
To add an Escape key to iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard, open the Settings app and tap General. Choose the Keyboard option, then tap Hardware Keyboard. Select the “Caps Lock Key” option and choose the “Escape” option. This will perform the same effect as pressing the ESC key.
The iPad Keyboard Folio has a 14-key function row, including an escape key, 12 function keys, and a screen lock key. The function keys control many features, and the Magic Keyboard Folio is a premium built case that holds down the display above a 64-key backlit device. To get the Escape key on iPad keyboard, use a keyboard shortcut or modifiers key feature, including Apple’s own Smart and Magic Keyboards.
The Escape key is useful for canceling functions, and the system-wide synonym for Escape works across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. To invoke Escape, press Command + period (.) on the keyboard. In most apps, pressing Cmd and the period key (.) triggers the escape.
In summary, the iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard offers a premium built case and a fantastic typing experience, but it lacks an Escape key.
