A Darker Shade of Magic is a movie adaptation of V.E. Schwab’s best-selling fantasy series, set in four parallel worlds ruled by different magical powers and monarchies. The film was optioned as a film adaptation around the time the third novel in the trilogy was released. Sony Pictures and Gerard Butler’s production company G-BASE have acquired the rights to adapt the book.
The movie tells the story of a one-eyed thief named Kelsey Ellison, who is part of the first book. The adaptation will be produced by the studio that gave us Spider-Man and written by the man who gave us John Wick. The project is categorized as in development, with data only available on IMDbPro and subject to change.
On June 29, 2016, a YouTube premiere of the Darker Shade of Magic Project was announced on the channel “Kelsey Ellison”. The movie development timeline is still in progress, with the first novel, A Darker Shade of Magic, being released on February 24, 2015. A special collector’s edition of A Darker Shade of Magic was released on October 31, 2017.

This is incredible. AMAZING. I’m disabled and a wheelchair user and this is a problem that I have encountered for years. Things are starting to get better, to the point that my friends with disabilities and I are sometimes getting auditions but often an able bodied person is cast- even for a disabled character. Then the production company can say disabled people were involved in the process because disabled people auditioned. It can be so discouraging.
before, i had no idea about this series at all but now that i’ve learned it through you i can definitely say that you would be amazing as her! not only do you resemble her, like, A LOT, it would also definitely mean a lot to the disabled community to have an actor with the same disability as lila to play her! i am very supportive of this, i do hope it works for you.
I have been following you on insta for a while, I think your ADSOM content intriguing me is what led me to read the books in the first place, and now coming back to it having actually read the original content, I love your take on it even more. Reading it, I picture you as Lila. It just fits so perfectly. I don’t know if VE ever reacted to your content (although I should hope she did), and I don’t know if any news came out about the casting of Lila (do let me know if anything was released! It’s very admirable how youve created this (not only showcasing such skill) but to uplifts the voices of numerous minority communities that need representation in media. This feels like it’s the start of something great.. revolutionary even. Young people especially, need to see people like them on screen, its so important. This trailer is better than many movies with huge financial and industry backing. If y’all did the movie yourselves with the same dedication as the trailer that’d be phenomenal. Hopefully they’ll cast properly for the movie properly cos otherwise it’s always upsetting to a character poorly casted when there is a better option such as you out there ❤️
Not profitable? It’s always about money in the end for some of these directors. I struggle with depression, would that be distracting, unprofitable? More power to you! Being disabled and part of the lgbtqqip2saa community myself I often encounter discrimination and ignorance in my working life (I act and do background work) so being on set with you all, with people who listen and understand, who are passionate and talented was beyond words. I feel like the trailer was too cut for it to show how good you would be for this character. I wish we got more time to focus on you being lyla. Kinda like the lounge scene in sisters of house black, where we got to see you talk about marrying lestrange. I feel like that scene just made me go, yes that’s bellatrix.
i dont like the casting or the way the characters were portrayed. I feel like lila is more sly isntead of being so overly loud and cocky like she isnt afraid or cant be harmed. Holland also was a little too loud, i feel like hes more soft spoken and his words bite more, that his head is down and that he shows no emotion which i dont think the cast of him worked especially with the accent. Though kell imo was basically perfect. I also like that lila was seen as a super integral main character which i was afraid would be lost like most book adaptatiobs. eg. bean being enders best budy dynamic from the beginning and not the sly smart after thought he is in the main story only to find out he was one of the main minds behind it all. And for ender to be changed from s thinker and very emotional to a angsty kid who talks back was so weird, like i feel all was lost in that movie. (i love enders game but hate o.s.c)
I absolutely love these books! I am a bit late on the band wagon and just discovered them very recently but I am obsessed! Have always been a huge Harry Potter fan and this just feels like a fun adult new fantasy series that I am just AHH I LOVE THEM!! I am so excited to see them as a movie! Cant wait to see the cast!
