Starting from day 6, or when you kill your first Last One (pink version of a monster), you can start leveling up abilities with the triple up arrow next to their name. Each time you do this, you will get boosted stats and the possibility of ATB cost reduction. However, you cannot completely level up an ability, as each time you fuse them together, you have a set chance to gain an auto ability such as Str+80.
Some abilities should start from level 1 (-ra spells, for example). At the very least, you should upgrade from level 1 to 2. For example, you cannot upgrade Fire to Fira – you must find Fira. Synthesize abilities of the same level and type to upgrade them.
You will soon unlock the Synthesis feature, available in Sorcery Shops, which enables you to fuse abilities of the same level to upgrade them. Use your time wisely but don’t stress about it too much. For example, if the quest you want to do doesn’t trigger until night, do something else in the meantime.
Leveling up and growing stronger happen by completing different kinds of quests. Every time you complete a quest, you will receive an upgrade in abilities. To get a rare ability, combine two Level 4 items with the same auto ability. Abilities can be improved at Sorcery Shops, which offer two main services: Synthesis and Level Boost. Synthesizing an ability the first time earns the Novice status.
