Spells That Function With Paired Magic?

Twinned Spell is a metamagic option in Dungeons and Dragons 5E that allows a sorcerer to target a second creature with a spell that normally targets the first one. This metamagic becomes available to sorcerers at 3rd level when they cast a spell like Charm Person or Hold Person. Twinning is great for save or suck spells like Hold Person and Hold Monster, as it doubles your chance to make the spell stick. Twinned Banishment is applicable to any spell where you target an individual, regardless of secondary effects to other creatures.

Some fantastic spells like Haste and Polymorph target single creatures and require Concentration, allowing you to affect two creatures at the same time. Twinned is useful for hitting two targets with direct damage, controlling, and controlling. It is especially useful when paired with single-target damage-dealing spells, offering a double damage buff for Sorcerers with single targets.

A spell that targets the caster themselves cannot be twinned, even if it only affects the caster. Twinning Haste and Death Ward are nice, and Mage Armor is useful for anyone that needs it (Wizard, Moon Druid). By RAW, you can’t twin Ice Knife because it only affects the caster.

Twining spells like Hail of Thorns and Lightning Arrow may work, but Twin Polymorph probably works. It is important to note that Twinned Spell will not work with spells that can target multiple creatures.

What is the most forbidden spell?

The Unforgivable Curses, also known as Avada Kedavra, Cruciatus, and Imperius, are powerful and sinister spells in the wizarding world. First classified as “Unforgivable” in 1717, they were tools of the Dark Arts and were subject to strict penalties. By the 1990s, using any of these curses on a fellow human being would result in a life sentence in Azkaban without parole, unless there was sufficient evidence that the caster did so under the influence of the Imperius Curse.

Many Dark wizards attempted to use this excuse to prevent incarceration, particularly after the First Wizarding War. Exceptions exist, such as Solomon Sallow, who used one on a Dark wizard without legal repercussions, and Aurors were permitted to use them during the First Wizarding War and during the height of the Second Wizarding War under Lord Voldemort’s regime. However, this would have been repealed following Voldemort’s demise.

  • On the subject of spells, a couple of quick questions. 1) In the Pre-Launch a spell caster was able to drop a concentration spell, however it seems that is not possible in the full release. Is this the correct behavior for concentration spells, or is my game bugged? 2) Cantrip…in combat you can cast them every turn and they don’t take a spell slot. Outside of combat apparently you can only cast it twice before requiring a short rest. Is this the norm? I usually don’t play magic users, even in D&D.

  • This really didn’t answer HOW to use them. I keep trying to use Quickened Spell as my opening move. I toggle the metamagic, select my first level spell, then it goes to the upcasting field with every spell level ghosted and inaccessible. I can’t do anything from there and have to back out. I’ve never been able to make it work once.

  • Not sure what I’m doing wrong but, sometimes, my Quickened Spell metamagic simply doesn’t work. Even if I have 3 sorcery points and did absolutely nothing on my turn, it simply does not allow me to use a second spell as a bonus action. I’m pretty sure that I’m not using it properly because it doesn’t seem to be a bug… but I can’t identify my mistake anyway :/

  • Can you show this on keyboard? I clicked on twin spells at the end of the quick bar, three spells lit up…..but when I clicked on the spell I wished to use, nothing happened. All spells stay lit, but when I try to pick one, then the first target….nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? And it’s hard to figure this out when you’re in the midst of a battle. It seems so simple….I’ve probably missed something. Still….thanks for the article. I enjoy all them very much. 😊
