Sta Rite Sand Filter Draining Instructions?

The STA-RITE System 3 is a high-rate sand filter designed for swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. It is an excellent performer, but it requires careful cleaning to prevent accidents or injuries. To clean the filter, turn off the pool pump and drain the filter/system before proceeding. Make sure any valves isolating the filter from the pool or spa are closed or that the water level in the filter is maintained.

To flush the filter tank of sand, remove the top clamp and multiport valve and flush the inside of the tank with a hose. Thoroughly clean sand from all parts and from the tank drain by opening the drain, removing the multiport valve on the top, and washing the sand out with a hose. Remove the laterals after and give everything a thorough clean.

Remove the filter drain plug (Key No. 17B) and drain all water from the tank. Hold the drain fitting securely in the filter body to avoid losing sand. A drain is located at or near the bottom of the filter tank to allow for filtration.

It is important to note that removing the drain port cap only allows water to drain from the filter, not the entire fitting. Tighten Sta-Rite trap lids to 30 ft. lbs. (4.1 kg-cm) torque for testing, and ensure that the water pressure for the test is less than 25 PSI (172 kPa).
