The Magic Begins In A Darker Hue?

Wraithmarked Creative is raising funds for V.E. Schwab’s “A Darker Shade of Magic” series, an adult fantasy novel published by Tor Books in 2015. The series, which includes the coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons, is set to be released as an illustrated deluxe hardcover. The project, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter, will run from January 9 to February 3, 2024. The book, written by American author V.E. Schwab, is set to be the first installment in the Shades of Magic trilogy.

The campaign features an enamel pin inspired by the book and created by Victoria Alyesa. Backers will be asked to help decide the color metallic foiling for the dust jacket and spine. The total funds raised on the Kickstarter are $339,057, with 3,080 backers. Each book costs $85, with a $15 Kickstarter discount. Bundles of two or five books are slightly less expensive.

The campaign is expected to generate interest and excitement among fans, as it is the first installment in the series. The campaign is expected to showcase the unique magical abilities of the characters, including Kell, one of the last Antari magicians.

  • My preorder of Sons of Darkness Barnes and Noble special edition will be arriving tomorrow. I’m not one for special editions and bells and whistles but, what the hell, I was going to buy the hardcover anyway and those sprayed edges look good. As per the summary, that book contains a major peeve of mine: pirates. But that’s not the only character in the book, of course, so I’m willing to overlook it. At least it doesn’t appear to have dragon riders or gladiators; that I can’t stand. Also, I’m in complete agreement with you about the title of Stormlight Archive 5. After 14 years since the release of Way of Kings I expected something…more. Less pedestrian. But yes, it’s the content that matters. Thank you for this Spotlight, P!

  • So many announcements, so much for my ever growing TBR!! Great article highlights. I am waiting for my copy of Argyle’s omnibus. I finally started Voice of War and am enjoying it. I am happy about Stormlight 5, not sure how long it will take for the second arc to be written. Virdi, what a gorgeous cover. Mohanty, have you heard anything on his next book?

  • I have a hunch and a hope that because of Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai, the amount of animated adaptations of books is going to increase significantly in the coming years. That would make sense because animation can do a lot that live action cannot. What I am afraid of though is that at some point professional money men who want to play it safe and think they know better are just going to remake all the old shows and movies as animated versions, and nothing new is let out.

  • How come 2034 for SA6??? That was bad news really D: I saw the “Elegy…” kickstarter but I didn’t know it was more on the grim side, I’ll definitely check it out! That said, BB and Wraithmark are definitely tow-to-toe when putting up some amazing special editions. I was hesitant on the War of the Worlds, but ended up missing it, tbh. Go wat The Boy and the Heron, I went to the theatre not long ago and its *aaamazing*!! You know, it has that Ghibli imprint and I think you’ll love it! Also, I have to agree that the Italian cover of The Will… was the best so far–very pretty! Anyways, I wanted to point out that I love how you always highlight the artists names when featuring cover or artwork. It helps finding the artists and I think that’s great, honestly. Thanks for these spotlights!!

  • I’m so confused as to why Curious King decided to change artists for Before They Are Hanged. I was so excited to see what Tommy Arnold would do for the covers of books 2 and 3. I hope the covers won’t be drastically different like in some series. I was really hoping for more gorgeous character art on the covers, like Tommy’s art of Logen.

  • Omg you gotta start at the Horus heresy. Forget the other books they vary from ok to down right horrible. But my god Horus heresy is amazing. It does have like 70 books in it. But 15 are “novella” types and others you can skip right over. But trust me just read the first book “Horus rising” you’ll be HOOKED

  • Writer of wandering inn is planning to release a parallel entry point into the series for those who want to experience the world of wandering inn w/o committing to the whole wandering inn saga. The book 1 name is Gravesong(The singer of Terendria Book 1) planned to release on 30 th April on kindle #SFFspotlight This story covers another pov that doesn’t become relevant in the main storyline before vol 7(~book 15) .Both series run parallel before vol 7 so plot points here are not major spoiler for main series, and that story of these characters can be continued in the main fm then onwards.

  • You are now my go-to for book suggestions. I decided to dispense with Goodreads, random lists – even from fairly reputable sites, and a host of other youtube content providers. Either there is nothing new in their lists, it’s clear they haven’t read half of what they’re peddling, or their content is so mediocre I can’t stand it. I won’t ever be able to afford the limited edition versions you have, but the stories themselves are really welcome. Once a reader like me gets past the usual suspects (like Sanderson, Rothfuss, Martin, Abercrombie, etc.) I need the Fonda Lees, John Gwynnes, Ruocchios…. those names I don’t see as often. Your suggestions also save me a lot of time I could spend reading. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your articles.

  • I don’t see how The Doors of Midnight could be worse than The First Binding unless it was going to start copying Wheel of Time instead and not reaching those book’s “quality” level, and that’s a very low bar to stumble over! I won’t be reading it, after the first book I have no faith in it at all. I just got done with the Eisenhorn books and I was very impressed, I think you’ll like them, seems like a good place to start, not too much to catch up on. You’re also right about the Italian Will of the Many cover, I much prefer it, I might buy a copy just to double jacket my copy. I’m unsure of if I’m going to get the A Darker Shade of Magic, it sounds very interesting but I’m really poor now after my PC wouldn’t boot and I had to buy a new CPU, it’s not here yet so not sure if that is the issue so I might be buying a new mobo too and my car needs some work aswell, but it is really tempting. I got two weeks to decide, might have to check the audiobook first and see.

  • Great way to kick off a new year of exciting SFF news! I am with you on the Wind and Truth title, but let’s just hope the content is better, then I will be happy haha. And I am also a sucker for some good ‘year in review’ posts of authors, they are top tier entertainment for me for some reason 🤣 Also, that BB Tainted Cup edition is stupidly gorgeous!! 🤩

  • ahhh i can’t believe Noragami is over!!! 😭I have to catch up on so much of it but i love that series so much. I hope the author works on something else! Also, I would say good starting points for Warhammer is the Eisenhorn series or Gaunt’s Ghosts both by Dan Abnett. You don’t need to know a ton of the lore of 40k to read them and it explains quite a bit to help you dip your toes into the universe

  • Another awesome sci-fi spotlight Spirited Away is one of my favorite anime movies some of these books are all check out definitely going to be reading the slain divine at the moment though I’m reading The Spider by Leo Carew book 2 of the Under the Northern Sky Trilogy after reading book one I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened next so more likely going to read book 3 the cuckoo when I’m done another awesome article by the best booktuber on YouTube you put the great work

  • Petrik Strikes again! Thanks for the article man! As for 40k, I think Eisenhorn is a great starting point, but the problem is that it is very very hard to get the next book in the series, Ravenor… It is out of print and the secondary market prices are insane. It might or might not get reprinted in the near future, who knows with Games workshop, they have no rhyme or reason in their reprint schedules. My personal favourite books for 40k are the Gaunt’s Ghosts series. There is a relatively easy to find in print series of omnibuses, namely 1) The Founding 2) The Saint 3) The Lost 4) The Victory part 1 5) The Victory part 2. I absolutely loved all of them, with the very start of the series being a bit rocky since it has to do all of the establishing of the characters (and there are many.) The lost and the Victory part 2 has the most grimdark of the grimest and darkest I have personally read. (Besides the wh40k universe actually coined the term grimdark) There was a particular point in Only in Death (penultimate story in the Lost omni) that totally broke me and I was literally crying, couldn’t hold back the tears…. EDIT: Shit. I am tearing up right now just thinking about it…

  • It’s pretty cool that Cradle is getting an anime adaptation. Typically it’s manga, and not actual books, that receive that treatment. Kinda off topic but I’m hoping you give Lazarus (Shinichirō Watanabea’s next creation) a watch and review after it releases. I get that it’s a ways off at this point, but the very fact that Watanabea is making another anime, and the production values seem to be seriously high, has me more excited for it than any other anime release.

  • We continue to give George a pass on not finishing his work and it’s ridiculous. He spends all his time doing literally everything else and the attitude of “well the books he did write and the world is so amazing, so it’s fine” is why he’s comfortable never finishing it. It’d be one thing if he couldn’t finish it like Jordan, but he’s just willfully not finishing it and that should be unacceptable.
