The Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate, announced its new mascot, Clara, the Heart of the Commonwealth, ahead of a six-game home series with the Norfolk Tides. Clara, a heart-shaped mascot wearing a nurse’s uniform, is named after Clara Barton, an Oxford native who founded the American Red Cross in 1881. The team introduced their newest mascot, “Smiley”, a yellow smiley-face pin, as part of Canine Companions for Independence’s DogFest 2020 virtual event.
The WooSox also revealed Woofster, a new team mascot that will act as the official rescue dog of Smiley Ball. The mascot was designed by Worcester’s own Harvey Ball in 1963. Ball’s son, Charlie, was also at the event.
