The University of Tulsa (TU) has announced the unveiling of a new mascot, Gus-T, at the beginning of the 2023 season. The university took name suggestions from students and narrowed it down to three options: Gus T., Gale, Herc, and Gus-T. The new name will be revealed to News On 6 and will be unveiled on Thursday.
The University of Tulsa’s nickname “Golden Hurricane” originated in 1922 and was later replaced by Captain Cane, established in 1997. The first Tulsa Hurricane mascot debuted in 1977 with the name “Hurc”. The university is asking fans to vote on the new name ahead of its reveal.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane Basketball arena, Reynolds Center, Michael D. Case Tennis Center, Donna J. Hardesty Sports and Recreation Complex, and other venues have all been named after the university’s mascot.
