A spell requires a material component to be consumed by the spell, and the caster must provide this component for each casting. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access the spell’s material components or hold a spellcasting focus, but it can be the same. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.
For a spell with S components but not M components, both the focus and the caster must hold their hands in one hand. For SM spells with a spellcasting focus and no free hand, S (no M) spells require emptying a hand.
Warcasters can cast spells that require verbal and somatic components, and each spell’s description indicates whether it requires verbal (V), somatic (S), or material (M). A free hand is required for spells that require just a somatic component, unless the War Caster feat is used.
Somatic spells require a free hand unless the player has the War Caster feat or similar ability. The general rule is that only one free hand is needed to cast a spell with somatic or material components, and only if it has a somatic component.
In Dnd 5e, to cast spells, a free hand is required until the player takes a warcaster feat. Customization and build options are available for those who wish to cast a spell with a somatic component.
