Donny Osmond is such a fascinating person. I got to learn a lot about him by researching him through various interviews since I had wanted to surprise my mother with a meet and greet pass with Donny— her lifelong crush. I needed to make sure he was a decent guy before she could potentially have her heart broken by meeting some jerk, and I came to find out that he is the absolute best. And when we met him he was the kindest, most genuine human being I have EVER met, let alone a celebrity. I wish him all the best. At age 28, I’m now a life long fan.
What a man! This is the first time I’ve heard him talk about his dark years. Drew is such an amazing host; she has a way of making her guests feel so comfortable and at ease, her emotional intelligence is off the charts. Donny was absolutely right when he told her how great her show is at the beginning of the article.
I just saw Donny on his birthday at the London Palladium and the love that he got when he walked onstage and we all sang Happy Birthday to him. He was choked. I went with my son and he got to see the man I have loved since I was 11 and I’m 61 next week. I never gave up on him, even in those empty years I kept faith with him and tried to keep track in the UK of what he was doing. I’ve never met him, I met his wife and mum in the audience once many years ago, but if I did I’d just say thank you for all the happiness you have given me in my life.

When I was a little girl, my dad beat the hell out of me. My husband’s family took me to a Donny Osmond concert. I went to get an autograph and he asked why I was so bruised. I cried and told him that his music makes the pain go away and how much I luv his purple socks. I showed him mine and he took off his socks and gave them to me and said,”when ur sad, hug them and know I’m with u and ur worth something”. He also signed a picture and the socks for me. To this day, I still look at them with luv. When he got married, I didn’t abandon him cuz I was happy he found luv. There’s no better famous person, who is a role model to young kids especially in the mid to late 70’s, than Donny Osmond. He saved my life that day cuz I was not in a good place. I thought well if I’m being beaten than maybe I shouldn’t have been born and maybe I should end my life cuz obviously it’s not worth much if my dad is beating me all the time. I always respected Donnie, it was like he completely disappeared in the 80s. I had my own life turmoil so I’ve never been one to idolize stars/performers. It is good to see him living his best life. You know he’s right. Donny Osmond fans were nuts back in the 70’s. I was always more of a David Cassidy fan, but my best friend and her sister were all about Donny Osmond, and they were DEVASTATED when he got married. Like I don’t know what they thought, that he was going to marry them? I mean tears, and tossing their records. It was silly and stupid and yet it did happen.
I’d forgotten how much the Tiger Beats etc always profiled the Osmonds and the Jacksons similarly during that time, w obviously Micheal and Donny as the featured singer – just how much they had in common at the time for a few years, career wise. Reminded me of the joint split screen posters of both families they would do and so on… Kudos to Donny for finding that grounding w his family and not becoming another casualty of his success.

His life was also very parallel to David Cassidy’s. David was in Little Johnny Jones before Donny. David did “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in 1983 first. Donny did it later. David had a hit single in 1990. Then successful in Blood Bros & EFX. He talked about being lonely despite being lonely before his wife too. Sadly, he did his oldies after EFX that he hated so drank afterwards & it killed him. 😪
The sad part about what he said is one everything was 100% true but when it came to balancing for Michael Jackson I honestly believe he would have been able to do it I think he would’ve been a master at it the same way he was a master at everything else that he’s done. But the people controlling him and the people controlling his life never would have allowed him to be able to have that balance
My Friendsgiving group talk about Donny Osmond oftentimes. We knew he got married and was happy for him. Debbie was a beautiful choice for our very first TV/Music boyfriend! Always thought it was so stupid and infantile to judge a performer by their marital status, but it’s a reality. John Lennon tried to keep Cynthia and Julian a secret, Davy Jones kept his marriage quiet, and it didn’t help the Monkees’ sagging fortunes when it came to light. Elvis married in 1967, but by that time his status as the King of Rock ‘n Roll was almost honorary. Osmond’s fall was so complete and sudden you’d think he’d killed someone. Justin Beiber married, but he’s well on his way out anyway. You can’t coast on worthless garbage forever, which is just the sorry state of pop music in general.
This just shows how fickle the American public is. The Osmond Brothers and especially Donny were really popular during the late 60s and through the 70s, and Donny became even more popular with “The Donny and Marie” show, and yet, starting in 79, he couldn’t get a recording contract for 10yrs. I mean, did producers really think the public hated him that bad. Meanwhile, MJ was cranking out hit after hit. Donny had to be wondering what was going on
The way I look at it, all those fans who “dropped him” after he got married weren’t true fans. They were fans of his image. Donny’s always been a class act and yes his face was all over my bedroom walls as a teen. This was a great interview. We all have them but it’s so hard to be such a major public figure with everyone up in your business.
I was in Branson Mo. years ago when Donny was performing at the Osmond Theatre. After the show, he and another guy came into the resturant accross the street to dine . My sisters and I were there and my heart was about to jump out of my chest just seeing him in person. My sisters urged me to go get a picture wirh him and an autograph, but I refused to intrude on his privacy. I love him and respect him too much.
I would’ve never burned Donny’s records. Especially now when his music means so much to me, to all of us perusal this. And I believe what he said about the green light and his kids and grandkids, because the Osmonds always work together as a family where everybody had to say so before anybody did anyting. I’ve been an Osmond fan since 1968 when I first found out abt them. Father God doesn’t want us to have icons ( you will have no gods before me ). hence, God allowed Osmond to go to the bottom, after he was at the top. This is biblical. I agree with Donny, Drew’s show IS magical, as is she. My very first concert at age 10-11, was the Osmond Brothers. I’ll never forget that. Donny was a good example in my life. I was going through a rough patch in my life. I looked in the mormon church and l knew a lot about the church threw donnys career. I knew for myself it was the right church for me only not donny. As l write the message now l am still a mormon after 43 years been a member. I dont go to church now but my testonomy of the church is in my soul. It is the best thing l have done in my life thanks to donny and his family. There is no regrets been a mormon or now we call ourselves lds. Thank your for your music.
Good interview. But Donny has been in show business since he was 6. He cant understand how difficult life can be for the average American. Its sad what he went through professionally for a decade but he has not lost everything like some people. He has not suffered really bad financially. Thats a good thing. But he cant understand what its like for the average person when they lose their career.
I had an opportunity to see the final Osmond family tour in the early 80s and I didn’t go. It has haunted me for nearly 40 years as I was one of the few fans who never stopped buying their music. But I was going through some emotional issues at the time. Then health has not allowed me to travel for decades. Missed out on Branson, missed out on D&M Vegas shows, and now I’ll miss out on Donny’s solo shows. I realize I will die without ever seeing an Osmond in person and I wonder how that could have happened.
It’s amazing how Chris resembles a younger Donny. I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that Donny has sons in the 30’s and 40’s and 14 grandchildren. Seems like only yesterday we crazy teens were driving our parents insane as they happily drove us to see him and the brothers at various venues around our state and others.
Donny is amazing! I saw him in Philadelphia with my parents many years ago and he was awesome to see in concert! He has always been my favorite member of the Osmond family along with his sister, Marie. I’m happy that his favorite color is purple like me! I’ve heard him in Mulan and Joseph, which I used to watch over and over. Especially Joseph! He’s doing what he did in his teens. Which he was coached into by parents and siblings. But it’s how he grew. It’s like a kid that grew up doing drywall, or, real estate sales, or, setting up vending machine accounts. One just knows it, as is said. The business has changed, but much of the basics are still there. I liked playing when I was a kid. Donnie was working when he was a kid. A difference possibly is, having your parents and siblings right beside you while working. For many families that’s not the experience. ( For many, it’s when one works or plays, they do it alone or making new ‘friends’ ( people you just met, but you don’t really know yet), or actual friends, if they’re available. So, in that way, school helps bunches of people. I really like that the news announcers, liked that. Thank you.( Although I think that was Donny’s most rocking song you started the clip with. It probably was a mostly country concert)
