In Doctor Strange 2, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) distinguishes between sorcery and witchcraft as they battle against Wanda Maximoff in the Multiverse. Both practices are magic, but they are distinct forms of magic. Sorcery is a form of magic that involves predicting fortunes, working the earth, and peddling. Witches, on the other hand, practice witchcraft, which is energy that comes from the universe.
WandaVision director Matt Shakman discusses the different magic colors seen in the MCU, including with Wanda and Agatha. The MCU reflects a loosely-goosey cosmology, with Witchcraft being innate for Wanda but not innate for all witches. There are several differences between witches and sorcerers in the MCU and comics, such as the difference between Dark Magic and Witchcraft.
Some sorcerers seem to see Dark Magic and Witchcraft as the same, but they are actually two different branches of magic. Witches practice Witchcraft, which is energy that comes from the universe, while sorcerers are born with their abilities.
In conclusion, the MCU reflects a loosey-goosey cosmology, with sorcerers and technomancers drawing power from various sources to harness mystical energies. The differences between witches and sorcerers in the MCU and comics highlight the complexity of the relationship between these magical practices.

Is Dr. Strange more powerful than the Scarlet Witch?
Despite her portrayal as a more formidable figure than Dr. Strange, the Scarlet Witch is not as adept in her abilities. At the height of her abilities, she demonstrated the capacity to alter the fundamental reality of the universe, placing the entire Avengers organization in jeopardy due to her exceptional proficiency in magic.
What is the strongest form of magic in Marvel?
The potency of magic is enhanced by its longstanding associations and its capacity to be integrated with other forms of magic, rendering it a formidable force within the context of the MCU.
Is Loki A sorcerer or a wizard?
Loki, a powerful sorcerer, has found allies with similar intentions to cause destruction against humanity. He and Dormammu of the Dark Dimension attempt to trick the Avengers and Defenders into assembling the mystical Evil Eye, but both are defeated. Loki also joins forces with mortal villain Norman Osborn, AKA Doctor Doom, to launch Ragnarok. Karnilla the Norn Queen helps Loki in certain situations, but her love for Balder often hinders her efforts. Amora the Enchantress, Loki’s brother, helps defeat Thor and exploits his weaknesses when he unintentionally forms the Avengers. Amora is known for his power and group affiliation.
What is Doctor Strange’s magic called?
Stephen Vincent Strange, a Sorcerer Supreme and Master of the Mystic Arts, was tasked with resurrecting his late girlfriend Christine Palmer after she died in a car accident, resulting in the destruction of his entire universe. He was later recruited by The Watcher to help save the Multiverse from Ultron. Together with Captain Carter, Thor, Erik Killmonger, Gamora, and Star-Lord, they formed the Guardians of the Multiverse.
However, Strange’s isolation led to a madness of grief, deciding to protect universes by capturing Universe Killers and various heroes to sacrifice them to his Forge to resurrect his dead universe. Captain Carter and Kahhori foiled his plans, leading Strange to regain his senses and sacrifice himself and his grief to restore his universe and Christine. However, this cost him his life and existence in the reborn universe.
One night, Strange arrived at Christine Palmer’s apartment to pick her up for a dinner party. When Palmer called Strange handsome, Strange replied that he had just pulled his suit out of the dryer and was charismatically calling her stunning. Palmer told Strange that they could do better than that, and Strange remarked that they could do better than that.
What is a male witch called?
The term “witch” is primarily used in colloquial English, with women being the male equivalent. Modern dictionaries distinguish four meanings of the term: a person with supernatural powers, a practitioner of neo-pagan religion, a mean or ugly old woman, or a charming or alluring girl or woman. The term “witch” was first used to refer to a bewitching young girl in the 18th century, and “witch” as a contemptuous term for an old woman is attested since the 15th century.
What counts as a sorcery?
Sorcery, a practice of malevolent magic, originated in the ancient Mediterranean world and was derived from casting lots for divining the future. Some scholars distinguish it from witchcraft by stating that it is learned rather than intrinsic, while others argue that modern witches claim to learn their craft. The term was applied to any magician or wizard in the early Christian era, but by the Middle Ages only to those who allegedly practiced magic intended to harm others. In Western popular culture, the sorcerer often assumes a more positive guise.
Historically, sorcerers have been feared due to their supposed knowledge of the occult and understanding of poisons. In the 13th and 14th centuries, most trials for witchcraft involved deaths attributed to malevolent magic, likely caused by poisoning. In the Malleus Maleficarum, Dominicans Heinrich Krämer and Jacob Sprenger associated sorcery with a group of witches who allegedly practiced Satanism. Witchcraft was considered a Christian heresy, and sorcery was believed to be an integral part of a witch’s dealings with the Devil.
In the early modern period, those who were known to pronounce curses were guilty of sorcery. The witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts, in the 17th century were rooted in accusations against two women who cursed their neighbor’s cows. Contemporary witches, or Wiccans, do not practice Satanism and denounce the practice of malevolent magic.
Is Dr Strange A sorcerer or a wizard?
Doctor Strange is a fictional sorcerer who draws his powers from mystical entities like Agamotto, Cyttorak, Ikonn, Oshtur, Raggadorr, and Watoomb. He wields mystical artifacts such as the Cloak of Levitation, the Eye of Agamotto, the Book of the Vishanti, and the Orb of Agamotto for clairvoyance. In addition to his magical abilities, Strange is trained in martial arts, including judo, and has proficiency with magically conjured weapons. He was a skilled neurosurgeon before nerve damage impaired his hands.
Doctor Strange is described as “the mightiest magician in the cosmos” and “more powerful by far than any of your fellow humanoids” by Eternity, the sentience of the Marvel Universe. He holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme since 1973, except during an interruption from 1992 to 1995. He relinquishes the title in 2009 but reclaims it in 2012 when he proves himself willing to protect the world even without the title.
What are the three forms of magic in Marvel?
Magic is a concept that aims to reshape reality by tapping into existing power found in the Universe or other dimensions. Personal energies, derived from the life force of a sorcerer, are limited to mental abilities like astral projection, hypnotism, telekinesis, and telepathy. To avoid depleting an individual’s life force, sorcerers must learn to harness external forces through meditation techniques and trained willpower. Students at K’un-Lun are trained to harness Chi, an internal force, to strengthen their minds and physical capabilities.
Universal energies, derived from their home dimension, can be used for conjuration, transmutation, and teleportation. They are commonly used in battle to create shields, weapons, and other energy-based constructs. Universal spells require specific gestures and words to activate. Some Universal energies can also be used by astral bodies with a dimensional anchor, such as the Ancient One, who used herself as an anchor to force Stephen Strange’s consciousness to safely travel through the Multiverse and return to their physical world.
What type of witch is the Scarlet Witch?
The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, is a fictional character in Marvel Comics, first appearing in The X-Men 4 in 1964. Originally believed to have the ability to alter probability, she has been depicted as a powerful sorceress since the 1980s and occasionally as a supervillain. She joined the Avengers superhero team in 1975 and later married her android teammate Vision, resulting in twin sons William and Thomas. However, in 1989, the storyline erased Tommy and Billy from existence, leading to their annulment.
Wanda is primarily portrayed as a mutant, born with an “X-gene” that grants superhuman abilities and traits. However, a 2015 storyline revised Wanda’s origin, stating that her superhuman traits are a result of experimentation by the High Evolutionary and inherited magic abilities. Her genetics are such that standard X-gene tests give a false positive, meaning she was not actually born a mutant. The Scarlet Witch’s storyline highlights the complex nature of her character and the potential for her to alter reality through energy sources.
What is the difference between sorcery and witchcraft in Marvel?
The practice of witchcraft is an inherent aspect of human nature, whereas the ability to perform sorcery is a skill that can be acquired through learning and practice. Some individuals may find it more natural than others to develop these abilities. The portrayal of magic in the MCU indicates that witchcraft is an inherent quality, whereas sorcery is a skill that can be acquired.
Is Wanda a sorcerer or witch?
Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, is a powerful mutant sorceress who has been a master of the mystical arts for both the X-Men and the Avengers. She grew up in Eastern Europe with her twin brother Pietro, believing they were born as mutants to a Romani couple named the Maximoffs. Wanda and Pietro fell under the wing of criminal Magneto and joined his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. After violent clashes with the X-Men, the siblings left their alliance.
When the founding members of the Avengers disbanded, Wanda and Pietro accepted an invitation to join the Avengers, hoping to reverse their reputations as villains. Wanda’s unnatural abilities stem from her mastery of magic and an innate power to warp reality.

Don’t forget to suscribe so you don’t miss more videos like this one* 00:00- Introduction 00:19- Asgardian Magic 00:49- Eldritch …
In the comics, there are 4 kinds of Magic Egocentric Magic is the energies from one’s own being. This translates to some form of psionic ability such as telepathy, telekinesis, astral projection, etc. Ecocentric Magic is the ability to harness the ambient energies from one’s surroundings such as cosmic energy or weather manipulation. This is similar to Asgardian Magic in the MCU. Exocentric Magic is the form of magic achieved by invoking an extradimensional mystical beings (both benevolent and manevolent) to empower one’s spell such as Cyttorak, Agamotto, Raggadorr, Watoomb, the Seraphims, Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath and the Vishanti to name a few. This is similar to the Eldritch Magic in the MCU. Necromantic Magic is a form of magic obtained from the extermination of life forces, usually through human sacrifices and blood rituals and is also powered by pain, anguish, and fear of sentient life. This was created by the Elder God Chthon, inscribed in the pages of the Darkhold and was practiced mainly by the servants of the Elder God Set during the Hyborean Age (during the Knull and Conan series) and still practiced by twisted witches and sorcerers. This is basically Dark Magic itself like what was practiced by Agatha Harkness in the MCU. Chthonic Magic or simply known as Chaos Magic was created by the Elder God Chthon; and was considered so powerful and dangerous that is was thought to be non-existent even by the Sorcerer Supreme (as well as by Agatha Harkness in the MCU). Chaos Magic is a form of magic that allows its wielder to manipulate, warp, and reconstruct the fabric of existence and reality to the user’s very whims, and bring about total destruction to the cosmos.
Magic in the MCU seems like a very powerful tool. Strange’s spells allowed him to go on an equal footing with Thanos using four Infinity Stones. And Wanda’s Chaos Magic can rival the powers of the Stones. Loki and Sylvie’s magic were also able to give them an edge against the TVA. This side of the MCU definitely needs to be explored further
Wanda now has access to unlimited powers from the Darkhold, which makes her even stronger from her reality warping chaos magic. This amplifies her already powerful magic together with the piece of the mind stone inside of her. The Scarlet Witch is literally a nexus being capable of rewriting reality on a universal scale, access to multiple dimensions, manipulate probability to her favour, and transmute matter including Thor’s lightning. Her chaos magic exceeds that of even the Sorcerer Supreme.
In my opinion Feige is working on a general framework of magic for the MCU currently. This is shown by the fact that Loki in the new Disney+ series also websites green energy at his hands when using magic in the same way as all other magic users we know from Wandervision. In his previous appearences his use of magic was not depicted in that way. So maybe we will be shown a general theory of magic in the future.
Loki’s magic is a variation of asgardian magic of his mother, Frigga, in norse mithology Frigga is from Vanaheim, and the magic over there is kinda different with different propierties, that’s why it is green in the MCU. You should talk about the different kind of magic in the 9 realms, obviously, when you get the needed information too. Also, there is the egypcian and roman magic with their respective gods and mythology, for example, Zeus (which will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder as a cameo), or Khonshu (which will appear in Moonlight).
All Marvel magic could be united under the definition: “Forces from unknown sources with unspecified limitations, wielded by various beings using different techniques.” Any magic is science we don’t understand yet, because science is just the study of forces (causes and effects) that can be measured and categorised, in any universe. However you look at it, magic is awesome because anything is possible – just as long as not EVERYTHING is possible and there are rules rigid enough for magic to feel consequential, but flexible and flowing enough to feel…like magic. It’s also more interesting than regular technology based power because it often tends to be tied to emotion, enabling the wielder to determine the limits of their own power depending on the strength of their spirit; if a heart is pure, so is their magic, and if it is corrupt, the magic is tainted and twisted.
Despite what some may think, I believe the various forms of magic are tied in essence to the realms of the infinity Stones Dr. Strange Sorcery yellow/gold tied to mind and spirit Wanda Chaos red tied to Reality Agatha Dark magic purple tied to the power stone Loki green magic tied to time (loki series may give hints) Witch/Wiccan magic Blue ties to Space stone,
so to say Wanda and her son Billy also known as wiccan has the ability to use chaos magic cause It was stated by Master Pandemonium that Billy’s magic was similar to Wanda’s, alluding that his magic could theoretically be Chaos Magic. As Wiccan has no standard spells and most of it being improvised on the spot, this mechanism also alludes some similarity to Wanda’s magic, due to the fact that their spells work on the same basis, by only saying what they want to happen into reality.
Is Asgardian Dark Magic a thing? It’s doesnt really look like any others and seems powerful. They use it to summon the bifrost, enhance their weapons and Odin used it to transform Thor (a god) into a normal human with no effort. AND on top of that he basically copies and pastes the god of thunder’s power in to a hammer that can make anyone into a second god of thunder if they basically can pass the most simple and effective test just by holding it…
I wonder if Wanda will be both a witch and a sorceress so she can use both Eldritch and Chaos magic. Sorcerers are the ones that use eldritch magic they can be both male and female, their magic is yellow and forms patterns and shapes. Witches are female like Agatha and her coven their magic is just displayed by colors of glowing energy around their hands but no shapes. Blue for “regular” witches but purple for Agatha. Chaos magic is just regular magic expect it’s way more powerful and red. The reason I wonder if Wanda will be both is bc Kevin Feige said that Wanda is using Doctor Strange’s type of magic except since she’s not trained that’s why it didn’t form the shapes and patterns so will they like merge her into a witch sorceress? Also Billy is definitely going to return bc of Young Avengers would he be a wizard or a warlock?
For those wondering if the voice is a real person or AI, it’s actually just Siri. In iOS 14.5, Apple added 2 new voices (both male and female) that sound very close to a human. I use it as my default Siri voice now, and it’s incredible and scary at the same time. Btw, it’s specifically called “American Voice 3” in the settings
Each magic has their own different main application usage like Eldritch magic 🟠 – Conjuring shields and weapons made with pure energy Dark magic 😈 – Absorb different energy and people’s life force Asgardian magic 🐍 – summoning weapons (daggers & swords mostly) and illusions tricks Chaos magic ♦️ – Casting spells without incantations and warp reality Witchcraft 🧙♀️ – Use runes to enchant and summon demonic entities, i think Mirror Dimension Magic 🔲 – Open a portal to the mirror dimension and manipulate the entire space and matter within Dark Dimension Magic 🌑 – Gives power to manipulate space & matter in reality and temporal Longevity
You forgot Robert, Tina, and Nico Minoru from the runaways tv series. The voodoo man From Luke Cage season 2 and I think there was voodoo users in cloak and dagger tv series. And there’s Daimen and Satanna Helstrom in the helstrom tv series. The Manadarian can do magic from the Shang Chi movie. And Sersi the Immortal Eternal was once known as the Greek Sorceress Circe, before she became a superhero. I don’t know if the MCU will explore theses characters magic. I’m looking forward to seeing Dr.Strange 2 introduce Brother Voodoo and Clea. And when we get to the Xmen, Storm is a low level magic user and I really want to see a live action Selene aka The Black Queen of the Hellfire club.
I see comments about people saying that Dr. Strange would beat Wanda. And they keep bringing up thanos and how Strange was beating him with 4 infinity stones. Did y’all forget that in Infinity War Wanda held back Thanos with ONE hand and the other was breaking a stone??? Thanos also had 4 stones in that scene but Wanda held him back while still producing enough power to break an infinity stone. Stop playing with Wanda, she’s a bad ass and don’t forget it. EDIT: Also Wanda’s magic far exceeds the Sorceress Supreme. Isn’t she the one that was teaching Strange? Yeah thought so.
Thing is, ‘Chaos Magic’ is an actual world practice – I am hesitant to say it is ‘real’ – that is nothing like that presented in the Marvel Universe. It is a form of post-modern belief – that is, you deconstruct your understanding of reality and build your own paradigm of belief which you use to craft spells. If you are into comics, then you could note that Grant Morrison, who wrote The Invisibles, is a practitioner.
I see these magics this way: Asgardian Magic – considered advanced form of science, is the practice of manipulating raw energy within one’s self in order to perform supernatural abilities like shapeshifting, energy projection, physical enhancement, etc. The only people capable of weilding this are the Asgardians themselves. Witch Magic – Similar to Asgardian magic, is a manipulation of raw energy within one’s body. The only difference is that the weilders of such magic require specific incantations or procedures for it to work. Eldritch Magic – practice of harnessing energies from various dimensions to conjure weapons and perform spells. Instead of relying in own energy, this magic uses external forces. Chaos magic – is an unstable destructive form of magic that could literally change reality itself. Unlike other magic, not many could access it. Only one in the MCU is known to have it, and it’s Wanda. Dark Magic – magics that are considred forbidden a. Asgardian Dark Magic – magic only known to few Asgardians like Odin, Heimdall, etc, is a type that requires a mysterious deal or bargain with their “Forefathers”. Odin used it in fixing the Rainbow bridge and sending Thor to Earth during the events in Avengers 1 and Heimdall used it to transport Hulk during the events in Infinity War. b. Dark Dimension Magic – magic that is derived from the dark dimension that provides the weilders immortality and vast control over time-space continuum. c. Darkhold Magic – magic that are beyind terrible.
Eldricth magic : draw the power from eldricth being such like Cyttorak User : Dr Strange,Ancient One,Wong and more Dark Magic : Draw the power from dark dimension and dormammu User : kaecilius,Ancient One,Agatha Harkness Asgardian Magic : Harness mystical energy and combined it with Asgard technology..(thats why Thor said in Asgard…magic and science is the same) User : Loki Witch Magic : (I dont know how this magic work) User : witch (bruh) Chaos Magic : draw the power from chthon… User : Wanda Maximoff Chi Magic : harness mystical energy from our body User : Shang Chi..Iron Fist Quantum Magic : harness energy from quantum realm User : Adam Warlock (Comic Version)
Just wanted to say I don’t think darkhold magic is different from dark agathas dark magic a modifier to other types of magic. We see when agatha uses her dark magic its purple which is just a darker version of the witch magic we see the rest of the salem witches use. Then when wanda uses it its just a blood red darker version of her normal scarlet. So I think the darkhold magic just modifies whatever magic source you already use and visually makes it darker rather than being unique.
Witches/Wizards/Warlocks – Born with the ability to harness magic. (Wanda, Agatha, Salem Witches, Billy, Frigga, Lorelei, Nico Minoru, Tina Minoru, Morgan le Fay) Sorcerers/Sorceresses – Born without the ability to harness magic and therefore needs to study how to website magical energies to conjure spells. (Loki, Strange, Wong, The Ancient One, Masters of the Mystic Arts, Sylvie, Classic Loki, Kid Loki)
if you contrast marvel’s chaos magic with real world’s chaos magick they have some parallels, but very different. I believe the Marvel writer took the idea from real world’s chaos magick, the spelling is correct magick with a k after the c. real world’s chaos magick is invented as part of the efforts to recreate pagan traditions but unlike Wicca that follows a ritualistic form of magick, Chaos Magick is not about rituals, it is an entirely new system of beliefs that works without spells or incantations it comes from the subconscious mind of the witch/wizard and that spells or incantations or hand waving are only meant to focus the magick practitioner into his/her goals and the best focus elements are sigils (not runes) and works following the natural laws.
Hears what I think, witch magic is like a shortcut to eldritch magic like you have to study for years to be a master of the mystic art’s meanwhile witches can literally do anything with minimal effort like I know the Wanda and Agatha are like super powerful but like it seems that witch magic is better then Eldritch magic
wanda may be the most powerful entity in the mcu as of now, but i still stand by the belief that doctor strange’s max potential is higher, since as was shown in what if, that max potential is practically infinite, as long as he just keeps absorbing dark creatures. he only had a fraction of shuma gorath’s power and he destroyed a universe in seconds, imagine what could happen with all of gorath’s power alongside whatever else he absorbed
Since magic is one of superman’s weaknesses he would get recked in the MCU especially by the scarlet witch. I wonder if she could kill him like she did the Illuminati? Marvel has done a perfect job slowly building up the MCU and letting all their characters shine. I wonder if the MCU will ever end one day or reset? I can see it going for a good 20 more years at least if not longer.
This is not all of them. This article isn’t even accurate tbh. Technically speaking the magic Dr Stange uses is called “Order Magic”, that’s how the elder gods refer to it. Witch magic could be considered to be the opposite of dark magic, which is what Agatha uses. The reason she was banished from her coven was because she used dark magic to gain more power than she could mentally or physically handle without corruption. Which is why I presume she wanted and acquired the DARK hold. Necromancy is technically speaking a different form of magic entirely. While dreamwalking exists and is doable for Order Magic or other magic users to do, its not necromancy. Necromancy is the ability to manipulate and control the dead and even bring the dead back to life, dream walking is taking over a dead body, or forcing your soul into another version of you, its not even close to the same. The only thing the Dark Hold shows people is EXTREMELY advanced (and even forbidden) forms of dark magic, there is no “Darkhold magic”. The only thing you could even MEAN by that, is the fact that it corrupts its users (while technically this also isnt true because elder gods can use it without corruption, since their minds are strong enough to overpower its influence), and this is also, dark magic.
Im confused about asgardian magic why thor doesn’t use magic too ? His lightning and flying power aren’t referred as magic anywhere. Why loki has amazing power but thor never has such. Maybe it was because thor was stronger in force and stuff so loki just went to a magic path to become stronger but still… their mother was raised by witches but i don’t recall her or any asgardians using magic and the term witches in asgard also make no sense if magic was tried like science. Why when asgardian came on earth their village was miserable ? No magic in sight nothing compared to their original land
I’ve noticed the energy used to prune people in Loki is the same fiery orange as the magic used in Dr Strange. Theory/Spoiler: I wonder if the TVA uses the same kind of technology/ magic in their pruning sticks as in the sling rings considering we now know that pruning doesnt kill people, it teleports them.
I’m getting confused with asgardian magic. What I mean by this is when Thor says where I come from science and magic are one in the same. If that’s true and Thor’s hammer can be treated like advanced alien technology, how is it that he can control lighting without the hammer. Do asgardians evolve into beings that can control an aspect of nature. And it gets even more confusing with Loki. Loki is an extremely powerful being in terms of magic. If someone says that’s the result of advanced technology that is a pile of burning horseshit
I really think Wanda websites her magic from Chthon. While Agatha websites her magic from the Dark Dimension (because of the vfx of her powers) or from Hell itself, tho idk where the Salem Witches website their magic from, maybe it’s like the case of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, but the only difference is that they are born with magic (and that’s maybe why their powers are bluish in hue). And the Asgardians on the other hand, website their magic from Asgard itself? Since Asgard is a magical place (like how Hela’s powers are amplified when she arrived in Asgard in Thor Ragnarok). Tho idk where they website their magic now, maybe in Valhalla?
No 1 Cosmic energy of Infinity stones and Galactus celestials cosmic powers Celestials and Galactus using it 2.Dark power – even darkhold is from dark energy, Dormamu is the ruler of dark (In dark dimension, even cosmic power will become weak) 3.Odin force Odin force is slight less than those other powers 4.Chaos magic 5.Sorcerors magic
Magic is the MCU is all the same magic. People like Loki, strange, Agatha, wong… they all use the same magic, just different spells. They all use SPELLS. That’s the difference. Same magic – different spells. Wanda also has access to this magic, but not as confined = no rules = chaos. She does not need a spell. She is not confined to the “laws and rules” of magic. That’s all it is. But it’s ALL the same magic. Even if it “looks” different.
Omg is this ANOTHER computer-generated voice narrator?!? 👎 Get a guy to read your scripts lol it’s GOT to be cheaper! (And undoubtedly easier!) You sound ridiculous, I can’t even tolerate it halfway through! Let alone all the way, or enough to leave a 👍like. (Let alone a subscribe.) Which is unfortunate, because I really wanted to listen to what was being said in this article, in particular! #ConstructiveCriticism #DontShootTheMessenger
